This might be the wrong time to post this, with everyone getting GWAMM on their MelDhuum characters, but here's my take.
I'm still miles away, but I've learned a lot. In my experience, these are the best ways to go:
1. Campaign Choice
- Prophecies: pre-searing is welcoming and busy, the new dungeon is great for leveling and you can get Legendary Defender of Ascalon on the way. This is where I started.
- Nightfall: This is the easiest start. Heroes right away, and they keep you alive.
- Factions: only if you really want a Ritualist or Assassin. Spirit Rift and Lightning Orb can take half your health in a second. I lost a Ritualist there early on.
2. Profession
I usually work from this idea: put something between you and the damage (minions, spirits or a pet) and be effective from range.
- Best picks imo: Necromancer, Ritualist, Ranger, Paragon
- Viable: Mesmer (needs skill to pull off), Warrior (has to be up front)
- Lots of survivability, but slower or riskier: Monk, Dervish
- Wouldn't recommend: Assassin and Elementalist
3. Habits that keep you alive
- Be patient. Saving a minute can cost you hours if you die.
- Pull single enemies with a longbow.
- Take Ranger as your secondary early: even with 0 Beast Mastery, a pet is an extra body. Use "attack my target" so it goes in first.
- Flag a Warrior hero in first, let him take aggro, then join.
- Get an ID Kit and an Expert Salvage Kit ASAP. Salvaging is your only source of materials.
- There's no bank on Melandru's Accord, so manage your inventory hard. Keep what your armor needs (Tanned Hide Squares for my Necro), sell what it doesn't and sell easy-to-replace mats like Glittering Dust or Bones when space is tight.
4. Hero unlock order
- Get Devona in pre-searing then Ghost of Althea shortly after in post-searing.
- Do the first Eye of the North chapter as soon as you're level 10. Vekk and Ogden are level 20 from the start. I did it after the Sunspears quest in Kryta and I really regret that. That quest is rough with henchmen.
- "All for One and One for Justice" at the Lion's Arch docks gives you Olias, who comes with Animate Bone Minions. That means bodies between you and the enemy, even if you're not a Necro.
- Put healers on Avoid Combat, damage heroes on Fight, and your tank on Guard or Fight.
5. Hard mode
Pick up the daily Zaishen Mission quest at Embark Beach and join the groups doing it. Tell them you're on Dhuum's Covenant and can't die. Out of roughly 30 missions, only 2 or 3 people didn't want to play with me. Just leave and find another group. Players are much better than heroes, and they often pop cons for the whole party.
6. Eye of the North PvE skills
- "You Move Like a Dwarf!"
- Ebon Vanguard Assassin Support
- "Finish Him!"
Combined with Assassin's Promise, you can keep a target shut down almost permanently.
7. Rubies and Sapphires without a material trader
A tip from someone in an Ironman Discord: run Bloodstone Caves with Light of Deldrimor. Hidden treasures on level 3 and beyond have a much better chance at rare mats. Normal Mode is fine, since Hard Mode doesn't improve the drops, and you get Dwarven rep along the way. Be ready to grind it a few times, though.
So far I have Survivor, Legendary Defender of Ascalon and Guardian of Elona maxed.
So, still a long way to go. But I'm close to maxing about 3-4 titles now!
