Giving Advice spent 25 minutes on a 10 point question and never even saw the last 3 questions

it was a 75 min exam, 100 points. question 2 was a 10 pointer and i got stuck on one part and refused to move on cause i was so sure i was about to get it. 25 minutes. gone
by the time i got to the end there were 3 questions left, 8 points each so 24 points total, and i had 6 minutes. i knew how to do 2 of them. found out after
did the math later: 100 points in 75 min is 0.75 min per point so a 10 pointer gets like 7 and a half min. never thought about it like that before
now i write the time budget at the top of the exam in the first minute and when i hit it i leave a gap and move on, no matter how close i think i am.

Question How do you force yourself to focus on a topic your brain completely rejects ???

Hey everyone,

I’m a psych student currently staring at a mountain of reading for a required research methods & statistics module. Normally, I love human behavior topics , but this specific material is so dense and dry that my brain literally refuses to process it. Every 5 minutes, I catch myself zoning out, staring out the window, or reorganizing my desk for the third time today.

Accountability I stopped re-reading my lecture slides and started listening to them instead. It accidentally fixed how I study

Re-reading slides never worked for me. My eyes go through the words and nothing goes in.

So I made myself a little page that reads my course PDFs out loud. The free apps I tried wanted an account or cut me off after a few minutes, so I just built my own.

A few things surprised me:

- I notice way faster when I don't understand something. When I read, I just skip over it. When I hear it, it's obvious.

- Dead time became review time. I can listen while doing something else.

- Skipping the useless parts matters. I mark the title slides and references so it doesn't read them.

It doesn't replace active recall. I listen first, then do practice questions.

Anyone else study by listening? Does it actually stick for you, or am I fooling myself?

Question Is there any mock tests for history and math?

Hello, some Chinese use mock tests for GaoKao exam. I was thinking about doing the same thing but to study both math and history from scratch.

I use Khan Academy to study Pre Algebra, and i just read history or watch some YouTube videos for it. But i was wondering if i could make it more effective by challenging myself

The gaokao exam is just an example for it

Accountability Dentist graduated in 2022, struggling to concentrate on studies for years, and confused about my career. Am I falling behind in life?

I'm a dentist who graduated in 2022, and ever since then, I've been struggling to figure out what I really want to do with my career.

Initially, I wanted to prepare for government exams and secure a good government job. I genuinely wanted to clear the exams, but whenever I sat down to study, I couldn't concentrate properly. My mind would constantly tell me, "Time is passing. What if I can't clear the exam? What if I fail? What if I'm wasting my time while everyone else is moving ahead?"

Instead of focusing on the material in front of me, I would spend hours worrying about whether I was doing enough and whether I would eventually succeed.

Eventually, I started working in private jobs, but I haven't felt satisfied with my career choices. I also enrolled in an online MBA in Healthcare Management, which I expect to complete in about six months. However, I'm still unsure about what direction I should take after that.

The biggest problem is that, over the last four to five years, I haven't studied consistently for even a single day. I know competitive exams require patience, discipline, concentration, and months or years of preparation. But whenever I try to restart, the same cycle begins.

I start studying, worry about the time I've already lost, compare myself with people who are ahead of me, question whether I can actually clear the exam, and eventually lose focus. I keep thinking about my future instead of doing the work that might improve it.

I'm now at a point where I don't know whether I genuinely want a government job or whether I'm holding on to the idea because I feel that I should achieve something prestigious. I still have a chance to attempt certain government exams over the next year or two, but I don't know whether I should give myself another chance or focus entirely on building a career in the private sector.

I'm also scared that if I choose the government exam route, I'll spend more years preparing and end up with nothing. On the other hand, if I give up now, I might always regret not trying properly.

I'd really appreciate advice on a few things:

  1. Why does my mind keep wandering toward the future, deadlines, failure, and comparisons whenever I sit down to study? How can I break this cycle?

  2. Has anyone experienced years of inconsistent studying and successfully rebuilt their concentration and discipline? What actually helped you?

  3. Given my background in dentistry and an MBA in Healthcare Management, would it be wiser to pursue government exams or focus on private-sector healthcare and corporate jobs?

  4. How do I distinguish between a genuine ambition to get a government job and the fear of giving up on something I've wanted for years?

  5. If you were in my position, how would you make this decision without wasting another year?

I know that ultimately, no one can make this decision for me. I'm not expecting a shortcut or a guarantee of success. I just want to understand why I'm stuck in this pattern and how to move forward with a realistic plan.

Sometimes I feel like I've fallen too far behind, and that thought itself stops me from taking action. I'd appreciate honest advice, especially from people who have faced similar struggles or changed career paths after graduation.

Resources I built a planner because Canvas and Classroom don't cover everything. What would you want in one?

I kept losing track of things because Canvas and Google Classroom each only show part of my workload, and the planner apps I tried were either ugly or missing something.

So I built one that holds assignments, exams, reminders, a weekly class schedule and notes in one place: https://planiverse.org

I'm curious how people here actually keep track of deadlines. What's the one feature a planner needs for you to keep using it?

Question What's the minimum amount of sleep I can live on for a week?

I am having 23 exams in 30 days, and I have 6 left. They're back to back from this Wednesday to next Tuesday, with the only break on Sunday. They're 2.5 hour long finals, and from 3 PM to 5:30 PM. I feel massively underprepared. How much sleep can I live on? I'm a third year undergrad majoring in Physics and minoring in Maths (11 courses total, finals of 6 remaining).

Question I tried almost everything and I can't focus

I tried like so many things to help me in studying- like putting devices in an another room, turning on study audio pomodoro method, 8d audio, healthy brain foods and etc. and I cannot focus on any task except for some times where I have a boost and finish things quick. And i dont think its ADHD because so many times when i am rushing to finish things like 30 minutes be4 the deadline i can not focus and my work is usually barely touched/finished. Why do I procrastinate too much?!?! and usually there are distractions everywhere 😭( btw im a G6 help me 🥀)

Resources What Resources do you use for history class studying?

What are some tips /resources you have that helped you with history classes ? I’m in world civilizations 2 and they use the mcgraw hill for textbooks and it’s dog shit . I can never easily find anything to read more about something I’m writing about but I don’t want to rely too heavily on just an internet search.
I love history but I’m just struggling to make connections with all the information being thrown at me with little context, my prof gives us reading power points instead of only reading from the textbook itself and the textbook readings are also lacking in some context that would be helpful. Thanks !

Question How to study for physiology exam that is in 9 days?

Hello, I usually study the night before, but I really need to do good on my next exam so I want to study before.

All of the content that will be on the exam has been covered. I have access to all the slides, the lectures and transcripts, and the textbook. I also took my own notes.

I was planning on making anki flash cards while going over the lecture videos and transcript, and study that every day. But anything else I should do? maybe watch youtube videos breaking down things I dont fully understand?

Question How do I actually keep myself motivated when Ive never had to even really study before?

Please dont take this as me being all high and mighty and oh wow look at me I never had to study, but it is true. I live in ireland and am in 6th year, where at the end you take big exams (the leaving cert) which basically decide if you get into a course or not.

So these exams are a ways away yet, in june, but there is soo much material it is recommended to have already started studying by now. but in every test I have ever had, tbh I have never had to try that hard and i get a really good score, so i have never had to get a proper long plan together and I am afraid that even if I do - a part of me will think its pointless as I could get the results without putting in much work.

I really, really dont want to fall into this trap so I was wondering if anyone had any advice, thanks!

Question What makes people ace their exams that I’m missing?

During my bachelor’s, I struggled to do well in what I was studying. Some classmates seemed to have found their method and got good grades, while I kept studying without much progress. I’d be curious how it went for you! Last time you got stuck on something you were studying, what did you do? and if your way of studying ever changed, what triggered it?

Question Why are people creating study groups when there are many places online to find one? Why do people even like study groups?

This also applies for people searching for an accountability pal.

I always see posts about people creating study groups, why is everyone creating one when there are soo many existing ones? Are the existing ones bad? Are the websites or apps not good?

Even searching for study groups is hard because there is just too many to choose from.

I understand body doubling, but it gets quite overwhelming when there is so many to choose from. Why not go to one place to find your ideal one, wouldn’t that be more convenient? Also with the many apps and websites, surely there are so many additional features that make the study groups fun and interactive, I must be missing something.

Or does everyone just have FOMO?
What do you guys like about study groups soo much to create/join soo many? Arnt there enough groups, apps and websites to choose from?

I was just wondering because I’ve been in an in person one before but not too sure about an online one.

Question How to study from textbooks

I need to figure out how to properly study from textbooks. I’ve seen a lot of videos talking about textbooks, and it seems like everyone has a different answer.

I find that I enjoy reading and I generally remember a lot of what I read. I took a high school AP history class where I read and took notes on the entire textbooks and read through each chapter. I aced the class and did very well, but then I just honestly used AI for everything else during my time in HS. I did well when I studied the textbook, but I am not faced with multiple classes and I’m not really sure how to go about studying on my own.

I’m taking stem classes next semester, and methods like the SQR3 seem too time consuming. Other people say to read the intro, conclusion, headings, and then read all the way through and take notes. Others say to just skim the book, or read the first and last sentence of every paragraph. I do not know lmao. But my goal is this: do extremely well on the test, but also really learn the material. I just enjoy learning, and would feel like I’m sorta cheating or missing out on valuable information otherwise? I feel a bit paralyzed because I just don’t know which method is “right” or “better.” Anki is cool, but am I supposed to create flashcards for ALL my classes? I think I could do this for 1-2 classes, but NO WAY I could the full method for classes like chem, bio, ochem, biochem, physics, calc, etc. like maybe one at a time. But I need to do really well in these classes too, and just learn this shit.

My goals: do really well on tests, but also REALLY learn this material.
