Gardening Planted garlic

First time garlic grower. I planted garlic maybe 10 days ago here in the Bay Area CA and put a few inches of straw on top. Everything has sprouted already and is like 5 inches tall. Is that normal? I thought they wouldn’t pop up until spring. I removed a bunch of the straw because it was all soaking wet after the rains and I’m afraid it might cause mold on the garlic stalks. Any growing advice is greatly appreciated.

Gardening Ungrateful Garlic

So this past summer, in southern Ontario, much of my fall planted garlic decided not to grow. Last week i turned over the soul and found sprouted and non sprouted garlic. I put them in a dish, in the shed. Now the little buggers decide to sprout. Should I plant these back in the garden? Should i cut the sprouts off? How deep should i put the bulb?

Gardening Garlic Dilemma -- Advice?

Last night I pre-soaked my garlic in a fertilizer solution as recommended by Keene Garlic, planning to plant it today. But after months of beautiful fall weather, I forgot to check the weather report. Today it started raining, hard, and it will continue for four more days.

So what should I do with the garlic bulbs I have soaked? Plant them anyway? Plant them and lay a tarp on top to divert more rain? Hold them in the refrigerator? Leave them outdoors under cover? Or let them dry out and plant them later? The daily high temperatures are in the mid-fifties (Fahrenheit). I am planting German Extra Hardy garlic in a raised bed in Oregon in zone 9A.

How to prep ground for planting

The past 2 years I grew garlic in grow bags. They have all grown and survived upper Midwest winters, but the bulbs were small. I am going to space even further apart this year.

However, I would like to try planting some cloves directly into the ground this year. My spouse helped me clear an area that is part of a mulched plant bed on the side of the house. We took out remaining shrubs this summer so there are no competing plants. The issue is when I tried digging into the soil with a hand spade the soil is kind of hard and compacted. I would need a shovel to get down 3-4 inches. I was hoping to loosen the soil add compost and fertilizer and plant.

If I dig up a few inches and then add a couple inches of compost and mix in fertilizer will that work? I guess I’m concerned about the roots being able to grow down into the soil. We have sandy type soil and our shrubs and perennials grow just fine after planting. I’ve just never grown any crops in ground everything has been in grow bags.

Where to buy Garlic for planting

The guy I bought my garlic last year didn’t answer this year.

I wasn’t able to save any of my harvest for seeding this season.

I’m in Central Missouri, what is a good place to buy from? I’m looking at about 2lbs. Usually I get chesnok red and music. I think I’ve tried Russian red too.

Hi

I planted lots of types of garlic here in Tasmania so I don't know what to go on as to when to harvest, they are various types (some are Tasmanian purple)

I'm going away for three weeks on Sunday so I'm not sure whether to leave them or harvest before just in case,

I know people say half the leaves need to be dead but I'm not sure if those are shrivelled dead leaves or dead bits of the stalk rubbing off,

Also alot of these garlics were from small cloves that a neighbour was giving away as they were too small to plant so they aren't necessarily going to become that big (I'm surprised they got as big as they did!)

Any insight appreciated!

I got some seed garlic in the spring and now is the time to plant it. Are these too far gone to plant?

Got my first seed garlic. This is more than I need or have space for so am pondering about what to do with the rest besides eating them.

Making either granulated garlic or garlic powder

I have extra garlic to turn into powder or granules this year. I've tried this in the past with a good processor and it ends up too chunky. The pestle and mortar takes too long for me. What do you guys use to get a nice, fine garlic powder?

Growing garlic question

Hi everyone! I’m wanting to grow garlic this winter and I just planted them in big pots today but we’re now getting a freeze tomorrow night. I know people typically say you should plant a few weeks before the first freeze, but it had been in the 80s just a few days ago.

Is it okay to keep them outside even though they haven’t been planted long? Or should I bring them inside and then back out after the freeze to hopefully give them a few weeks before the next one?
