Honestly, I don't even know what to do with Aer Lingus anymore.
Back in May, I was supposed to fly from Lyon to Glasgow via Dublin to attend an international scientific conference. But when I got to the airport, I was denied boarding because of an alleged issue with my immigration documents.
From what I understood, the ground staff were confusing the UK's ETA system with the eVisa system. I had a valid UK eVisa linked to my passport, but no matter how much I tried to explain it, they insisted there was a problem and wouldn't let me board.
Two days later, I went back to the airport with exactly the same documents. And guess what? Suddenly, everything was fine. The staff even apologised, and I was allowed to travel. The UK Home Office also confirmed afterwards that my eVisa had been valid all along.
By that point, the damage was already done. I'd missed an important part of the conference, lost money on accommodation I couldn't use, and had to pay extra travel costs. It also affected my professional commitments.
I filed a complaint with Aer Lingus, but they rejected my claim.
I then contacted the European Consumer Centre (ECC), which stepped in on my behalf. Only after their involvement did Aer Lingus finally offer me €300.10 (€250 in compensation and €50.10 for expenses).
To be honest, I already felt that this amount was pretty disappointing considering how much I'd spent on the trip and the conference, not to mention everything I missed because of their mistake. But I was tired of going back and forth, so I decided to accept it and move on.
I sent them my bank details in September.
Since then? Nothing. No payment, no confirmation, no update.
And just when I thought this couldn't get any more ridiculous, I received another response from Aer Lingus on 27 October regarding a separate complaint. They were once again refusing compensation, this time blaming "immigration issues".
So let me get this straight. They denied me boarding even though my documents were valid, allowed me to fly two days later with the exact same documents, rejected my first complaint, offered compensation after the ECC got involved, and now they're denying responsibility all over again.
It's been five months, and I'm still chasing €300 that they themselves agreed to pay. And that amount doesn't even come close to covering what this whole situation actually cost me.
I'm honestly exhausted by all of this. I shouldn't have to keep fighting just to get money they've already offered.
Has anyone else had a similar experience with Aer Lingus? How did you manage to get them to actually take responsibility and pay what they promised?
