Discussion So strange visiting fandom spaces from 10 years ago

So, I recently decided to visit the fandom I got into like 10 years ago. Since I Ao3 wasn’t that big of a deal back then, in order to read some fics for this fandom, I dusted off my ancient Wattpad account and went searching through my fic history and scouring the app for some new ones.

And man, it’s so strange to see how fans weren’t afraid to be genuinely weird back then. I saw teenage writers casually shipping themselves with adult characters, introducing their OCs in between the one shot chapters, doing challenges, once again, in the middle of the stories, and so on and so forth.

Nowadays, normie fandom posers would 1) ridicule those writers to hell and back on social media and 2) scream and virtue signal about “pedophilia” etc.

While fandom culture as a whole getting bigger did attract more attention to many wonderful and fun stories written by fans, it’s a shame that because of stan twitter rejects, engagement farmers and other kinds of posers hopping on a bandwagon, this sort of genuine, unapologetic and fun cringeness is almost extinct in the modern fandom as a whole.

Discussion Something I don't understand about my own fics

Something I really don't understand is that while I expressly write self indulgent fics for myself, at the same time, basically every fic of mine consists of things that I typically avoid while reading others' fics ??? I don't understand how my fics are simultaneously my exact taste while also being not my taste at all. I am the change I want to see in the fandom. Yet also not.

Ex. My personal standards for my own fics is that there HAS to be some illustration or it will feel incomplete. Yet I usually don't like art in fics at all. Another is that I basically only write really niche AUs, yet I almost always prefer to read canon based fics > AUs, and honestly often avoid AUs. (It reminds me of how a friend assumed I must LOVE historical AUs, cause I had a long running one myself, but I told them, no I actually avoid those completely LOL.)

Does anyone else deal with this or am I just weird????? I'm honestly just very grateful though that there are still people who do like my fics regardless of my own odd preferences 😭

Activities and Events Excerpt Game - Song Lyrics

Let’s do one of these today

As always, here are the rules:

  1. Leave a song lyric in a top level comment. Let’s keep the lyrics to 1 - 4 lines or one verse if the song has shorter verses. To not bury other prompts, let’s limit it to 1 - 3 consecutive prompts in a row.

  2. Reply to prompts if you have an extract that you feel matches the meaning of the lyric, has the same vibe, your extract contains words from the lyric in it or the phrase itself is used in the extract.

  3. Upvote the ones you like and try to at least comment on one answer to your prompt

  4. Be mindful of the sub’s NSFW rule

  5. Have fun :)

Discussion Tell me your craziest AU

Mine are a how to train your dragon Antarctica AU, the riders are Modern day researchers living on a base in Antarctica with their pets. Toothless is a Norwegian forest cat with his own ski goggles.

Ttte riders AU, the engines are now humans with horses. There’s currently an ongoing lawsuit against two canon characters and both decided to represent themselves. It’s so derived that the only thing in common with the source material is story beats, character names, and personality. But at least everyone is in character.

Plus it gives me an excuse to infodump about horses.

Discussion When reading a slow-burn fic, do you prefer it to stay as one character's perspective the entire time, or do you like it if the perspective changes?

And follow up question- if the perspective does change, would you prefer it to change halfway through, or alternate each chapter?

I'm just starting to write a slow burn fic where the romance is the main focus, and it took me so long to decide which character's perspective to write from (FYI I write in third person, but like from an over-the-shoulder POV). Eventually, I've decided to start with one character's perspective, and then change it around halfway through. The change will coincide with a pretty major canon event that drastically alters one of the character's lives, so I think it's quite fitting narratively.

The reason I wanted to change it up is because I was worried about missing out on something if we only got one character's perspective, if that makes sense? Especially because one of the characters has a tendency to hide his feelings a lot. I also really wanted to show how both of the characters feel about each other and I was worried I wouldn't be able to show that well enough if we didn't see both perspectives. However, I know it's totally possible to write an amazing slow burn with only one perspective, because I've read loads of fics for this pairing that do exactly that! Maybe I'm just not confident enough in my skills as a writer, haha.

At this point I'm not planning to change my decision. I also know that this is a personal preference so I'm not asking what people think is the 'best' way to do it- however, I'm just intrigued as to what people's preferences are, as it might influence the way I go about this in the future. Thanks! :))

Discussion How to get your New Document on FFN, It's Really Annoying

I have seen people say on the subreddit that you can get new documents to upload to FFN via the mobile app, and you can; it's just really annoying.

I logged into the mobile app and made a new document with the title of my fic and the chapter number. I then added it to the mobile app, but instead of writing anything in it, I just wrote "Test" so there would be a word in it. I was able to save a new document, and it did show up when I went to look at it in the web browser. So yes, it does work, but I wouldn't recommend writing inside the mobile app. Just put "Test" and then paste your writing on FFN under the new document works. I hope they fix it so the web browser will let you upload text. While the workaround still works on mobile, I wish they would fix the site, but it's still broken when you look at the stats page.

Writing Questions Posting my first fic, how to deal self-doubt and anxiety?

Hi hi! First time posting here. I've been writing my first long fic for the last several months, and I'm getting to a place where I'm close to being ready to publish the first chapter. I wanted to write the whole thing before posting, so I'm at 50k words right now.

But thinking about posting it, I feel a lot of anxiety and feel that my characters aren't well thought-out, I've taken a lot of creative liberties (Like characters are aged differently than they usually are, example, instead of being a few years apart, they are the same age), and just feel like no one will even care about what I wrote (not that that should matter). I guess I feel like my writing is quite immature and the first chapters I wrote a few months ago feel like the wrong tone/vibe completely. I like some of my later sections, and I'm worried no one would even read far enough to get to those parts.

My ship is very popular on AO3, and I see on twitter a lot of fics getting attention, and I just feel like mine is so unimportant compared to theirs. I understand comparison isn't helpful, but I would feel so embarrassed even posting about my fic on X to promote it, because of course it would be fun to have readers and people appreciate my work, but the idea of my mutuals seeing it and judging it makes me so anxious.

This fic means so much to me and I'm worried my perception of it would change if I post it and people comment something negative or if it got no response whatsoever.

I was wondering, did any authors feel this way when posting your first fic? Any advice for how to feel more confident about posting?

Any perspectives and advice would be very much appreciated!

Discussion Have you ever written a fanfiction that was a fan-fix? If so, what did you change?

The title speaks for itself, but for those of you who don't know what a fanfix is, a fanfix is a type of fanfiction that basically is the writer's version of how they would want an arc to go or a character to be developed. This can be for any fandom, so long as you believe that it could have been done better.

Recs Wanted Kirk/Spock fics

Haven't read for them before, thinking about jumping aboard the ship if anyone has any recommendations. I've read gen fics stemming from the 2009 Alternate series/timeline so mostly I'm looking for stuff based off that, but I'll read stuff from anywhere else as long as I don't need a deeper understanding of the universe or characters than what those movies gave us.

(Doesn't have to be canon complaint or anything, I'm down for AU's, I just haven't seen more than those movies and a handful of episodes from voyager/next gen)

Please no MCD, unhappy/ambiguous endings or anything more than passing mentions of recreational drug use.

I remember the fic having adam smasher, three V's and a bunch of others killing a lot of raffen shiv for a gig and then immediately getting ambushed by Kang Tao corpo soldiers. I think the shiv were protecting faraday or something.

Recs Wanted Any Skyrim fics where the Dragonborn (or someone else I guess) forces the Stormcloaks and Imperials at Helgen to cooperate due to the circumstances, at least for the moment?

Because I know y’all have this whole war going on and whatnot but dragons were thought to be extinct for the last few hundred years up until about 5 minutes ago, and now the biggest, meanest of them all is attacking US. ALL OF US. RIGHT NOW. Can you guys please LOCK IN.

Whether the initial cooperation during Alduin’s attack on Helgen carries forward at all or stops immediately after the crisis is cleared isn’t really relevant. I just really wanna read something where these knuckleheads are forced to use their common sense.

Discussion Should I include Whump as a tag?

I recently learned about whump, and I'm not sure I entirely understand it yet. But it sounds like maybe I could add it as a tag to a certain fic of mine (I'm always on the lookout for new tags to add to my fics). From what I found, it's when a character is put through a lot of suffering. Related tags being Angst and Hurt/Comfort or even Hurt/No Comfort. But at what point does it turn into Whump?

Here are the things the character will go through...

The mental trauma of being ripped away from her home and everything she knew.

Being poisoned and almost dying.

Being kidnapped and beaten, receiving broken bones in the process.

The mental anguish of believing she is the reason someone close to her died.

Watching an innocent man die.

An attempted kidnapping that leads to her having suicidal thoughts.

Another kidnapping that is successful, and results in SA.

She gets away from her captors and throws herself off of a cliff to do so, choosing death rather than what they would do to her.

Injuries resulting from falling into a river from so high up.

So, does this fit the Whump tag? Or is it too much, too little, or not the right type of thing altogether? There are other things, but these I would say are the biggest. Curious about your thoughts, thank you!

(yeah, there are several kidnapping ploys... it's something I enjoy writing and I swear it makes sense with the right context for it to happen 3 times)

Lost Fic Help find a spirk fic? [Star Trek]

Okay I have been searching ao3 for DAYS and I cannot for the life of me find this fic.

I remember Kirk and Spock are captured on an away mission or something and they’re in celebrate cells with bars between them (I think). Some something stuff happens (torture maybe???) and Kirk is like, dying and Spock like, brings Kirk’s mind into his own to keep him ‘alive’ even though his body is shutting down or something.

Fast forward a bit and they’re both stuck in Spock’s body, Kirk has realised that when Spock’s meditating Kirk can be ‘in charge’ while Spock’s not paying attention. Spock refuses to leave Jim’s body there so Kirk hijacks Spock while he’s meditating and gets them out.

They get back to the ship, they enterprise crew retries Jim’s body and bones fixes it up. BUT, Kirk’s mind can only inhabit his body while in physical contact with Spock so they need to fix this.

At some point I think Spock goes into pon farr and they have weird fun times messing around with Kirk controlling Spock’s body or something ??????

It ends with something but I don’t remember what, I feel like there was something about a bridge btwn Spock and Kirk’s minds but that might be unrelated. Anyways I desperately desire to read it again but I can’t find it anywhere so if u can help I’d MASSIVELY appreciate it (:

Venting Fanfic version of the character overshadowing the canon character in my head

Does anyone else struggle with keeping fanfic versions of characters you like separate from the actual canon character?

As in, part of the reason why, despite loving writing and reading fanfic s, sometimes I steer clear of them it's that when I like my or someone else's fic a lot, I end up thinking about it very often (especially if it's my own since I have to come up with scenes), and I've noticed that sometimes it bleeds through the actual character to the point that when I hear someone talk about that character my mind goes to the fic version first and then the canon one.

This actually and honestly irritates me, because I don't like the canon character being overshadowed in my mind, plus sometimes when I'm watching/playing/reading the source material I have a hard time remembering this is the actual character I'm seeing and not the fic version.

Lost Fic Victorious Fanfiction

This is a long shot in the dark, but I have vivid memories of an author on fanfiction.net with multiple great Victorious stories that were deleted several years ago, probably around 2020, or thereabouts. I don’t remember the author’s name, but one fic was Cat Valentine centric, titled Be My Saving Grace or something very similar, in which she’s kidnapped from a parking lot and held in a basement with two other girls. There was another series in which Jade has a little sister named Ruby, their father is abusive, and Jade and Beck have a daughter named Sophie as teenagers. I remember one story where Cat and Robbie had a child, but Robbie didn’t know so Cat raised her as a single mother for a few years before Robbie reappeared in her life. I’m sure there were more stories, but those were the main ones I remember.

If anyone can think of anything, has any way of finding these works or has them downloaded, please please help me out.

Lost Fic Help me find a Wattpad Forsaken fanfic.

I forgot what the tilted was call but I do remember I read it in Wattpad. It was a Forsaken x Male Reader fanfic. Where the male reader was in the military position of a captian I think. There will be flashbacks of the reader and his soldiers haning out. All of them having fun before the reader got into the forsaken realm.

I do remember some parts of the fic a bit though. I remember The reader and Guest 1337 chatting about the military. Guest ask the reader what rank he is then the reader said his rank then Guest started calling him sir and his rank. But the reader told him not to just to call him by his name.

If I recall I think it was a yandere forsaken fic I'm not fully sure. Also unsure if the author removed it since the author updated the fic slowly in Wattpad. I do have it in my library but its buried in other fandoms I read. Can't seem to find it no matter what I look up.

Discussion Beta reader advice

I didn’t have one for the majority of writing my fic, but accidentally copied and pasted my fic in a super weird way from my drafts to the website, so I got a beta reader. After like four or five chapters they ghosted me tho. I was slowing down writing anyways, burnout, but wanna get back into it. Should I try and get a beta reader again? Would I need to pay for a good one? What’s y'all's experience with them?

I liked having a beta reader, it was nice having to only read my chapter three times instead of five while looking for typos, and I think rereading the same chapter over and over again contributed to my burnout.
