Æthelstan died 27th October 939. He was the first King of England. The groundwork was laid by his father Edward the Elder and grandfather Alfred the Great. His brother Edmund I took the throne since he died childless

What do you most love about England?

From time to time, perhaps all the time, Reddit can feel very anti-English/anti-British. It's sometimes hard to love your country when you are surrounded by this. I have travelled far and wide and all countries have their own sets of challenges/special features, and I am always happy to come back to England.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 The things I love are:

  • How green this country is and our endless countryside. Even in urban areas you are always next to countryside and green. I love the hedgerows.
  • The historic architecture
  • Our ales and ciders
  • Our proud history (yes, not all good, but all nations have their flaws)
  • Our cheeses and pies and deserts and the Sunday Roast
  • Pubs!
  • The tolerance of our people (not perfect, but I don't think any country is).
  • Coastal paths
  • National Trust properties + gardens
  • Free museums and the museums in general
  • Our wide diversity of accents

I came back to England last year, and I really did miss home. I missed the English politeness. I really missed the English countryside and landscapes and how a lot of English villages/towns have different regional architecture, plus at times, even geography.

Bayeux Tapestry’s Return Has History Buffs Re-Enacting Like It’s 1066

Harold Godwinson, the last Anglo-Saxon king of England, was pacing around a field in southern England on Sunday, giving a thunderous speech to energize his troops before a battle against the forces of William the Conqueror, the Norman invader who was trying to steal his throne.

“People of England,” Godwinson bellowed, “I ask for you to believe in me, believe in our England!”

If they did, Godwinson added, history would remember them as the heroes who “drove the Norman dogs back into the sea whence they came.”

As Godwinson’s rousing speech reached its climax, the bearded king punched the air in celebration, and, like a rowdy sports crowd, the dozens of onlookers chanted his name. “God-win-son! God-win-son!”

It was a stirring moment — at least until one of Godwinson’s aides broke the authenticity of the historical re-enactment by asking if anyone wanted a selfie with the king.

One of my favourite spots in one of my favourite counties in the south east. You can see both the South Downs and the North Downs, and London!

Hever

We had such a lovely day visiting Hever. I had no idea about the history with the Astors and their restoration. My favorite part obviously was upstairs and in the long gallery. I could have stared at this portraits for hours. The gardens were stunning. I’d love to attend a wedding there for sure. Fun fact my favorite meal of the week was just down the road at Henry Viii pub. Steak and ale pie with mash so so good.
