Debian might actually be goated for gaming

• Upvotes

i've always been one of those people telling noobs to stay away from debian when they ask which distros are good for gaming because i thought the outdated graphics drivers would make it a bad choice. i always thought it would lag behind other distros especially the rolling releases like arch. i decided on a whim to try it again on my gaming PC since it's one of the GOATs and tbh the constant updates in fedora were starting to fatigue me (and it's also one of the distros officially supported by the new Easy AntiCheat update coming soon, which is a big plus) and my jaw is actually on the floor. using proton stable, the FPS in pretty much all of my games is better than any other distro i've tried, and even better than windows in MANY cases from my testing. this is nuts. i think this entire time they've been cooking by holding packages in purgatory indefinitely and i've just been sleeping.

the downside is that i haven't been able to get HDR to work right since the kernel is literally a year old at this point, but if that's not important to you (it isn't really to me), i HIGHLY recommend this. especially if you have an AMD GPU like myself (i'm not sure of the state of nvidia drivers on debian so can't speak on them). my perspective has completely flipped.

I'm itching to do a distro hop but I'm undecided.

I move to Linux about a year ago and since I'm daily driving Nobara Linux with KDE.

On an old dell laptop installed Mint. Works like a charm.

I have Raspberry Pi headless server with Debian. So I don't mind tinkering and not afraid of CLI. For example I had deleted my home directory by not paying attention. Lesson learned. :)

I'm sure I can do the hole Arch install too. If I wanted to.

I like to game in My Desktop. That's why I installed Nobara.

There are some issues lately with Nobara after updates on my system. some Apps stoped working, Video monitor starts disconnecting when gaming or fullscreen some videos. Also feels I need to do an update almost every day.

So I am undecided if I should try just plain Fedora and install all the gaming apps I need. or if I should hop to Pika OS.

Is it really anything special PikaOS ,Nobara or CachyOs do vs plain Fedora or Debian?

Also Not sure if I should try Gnome too.

Thoughts??

Cairn Linux! Hardened Linux with 7 day archive lag and snapshot rollbacks

I made an Arch-based distro for people who like Arch but are tired of updates breaking things. cairn-updatedoesn’t use live mirrors. It points pacman at the Arch Linux Archive snapshot from 7 days earlier, so packages have had a week in Arch before you get them. Every Cairn machine on the same date has the same package set. cairn-update --now gets today’s packages when a security fix can’t wait.

Also: btrfs snapshots before and after every package change, bootable from GRUB; AppArmor, an nftables firewall and kernel hardening on by default; LTS kernel; KDE Plasma by default, other desktops in the installer.

Known limits: the installer is text-mode and uses the whole disk, and security fixes come 7 days late unless you use --now.

Site: https://aceyx3-sudo.github.io/cairn-site/
Source (GPL-3.0): https://github.com/AceyX3-sudo/cairn

It’s just me working on this and its new so any feedback is appreciated

Cairn Linux: Arch-based, but it installs packages 7 days after Arch does, with snapshot rollback

It’s a solo project and it’s new, so bug reports and blunt feedback are welcome.

Love Cachy OS but hate most of the bloat. What do?

I've been using CachyOS across most of my machines for a while now. I've been on Linux on and off for years, and Cachy is one of the few distros that tends to just work for me. It's a little more opinionated than I'd normally prefer, but overall I've been happy with it.

The biggest things keeping me on the Arch side of things are the AUR and some of the quality-of-life features Cachy includes. I know a lot of that stuff can be added to other distros, but it's nice having it all there out of the box.

I'm not afraid of the CLI. I work in IT and I'm comfortable troubleshooting Linux when I need to. The thing is, I don't really want to spend a weekend installing vanilla Arch and hunting down issues anymore. Between work and family, when I sit down at my computer I mostly just want to game, browse, or get something done.

For software, I use the AUR for almost everything. Occasionally I have to build something myself or fall back to a Flatpak if that's the only reasonably up-to-date option. I'm not a huge Flatpak fan, but sometimes it's the easiest answer.

So I'm curious: is there another Arch-based distro I should seriously consider, or should I just stick with CachyOS?

I've looked at EndeavourOS a bit, but haven't spent enough time with it to form a strong opinion. Again, I don't mind using the terminal, I just want something reliable that doesn't require constant tinkering.

For hardware, my main system is a mid-range gaming PC with an RX 6800, AMD CPU, and 32 GB of DDR5. I also have a Lenovo Yoga with an 11th-gen i5 and an older XPS 15. Ironically, Windows still works better on the XPS because of the weird combination of a 4K display, integrated graphics, and NVIDIA dGPU. Linux has always been a little rough there, especially with graphics switching and Wayland performance.

In the past I've also appreciated more beginner-friendly distros like Pop!_OS, Zorin, and pretty much anything Fedora-based. Pop!_OS was probably my favorite non-Arch distro. I know a lot of that comes down to the desktop environment and default configuration, but it was stable, easy to live with, and generally stayed out of my way.

At this point I think I've realized that I like Arch's package ecosystem more than I like distro-hopping. I'm just trying to figure out whether CachyOS is already the sweet spot for someone who wants Arch without turning Linux into a hobby.
