[Shayna Goldman]: Why these 5 NHL stars aren’t scoring and whether it’s time to worry

Wyatt Johnston, Dallas Stars
2 goals in 9 games
Johnston was held off the board for seven straight games to open this season. The longer he went without a goal, the more he upped his shot volume.
He attempted 34 shots in all situations in his first five games, for an average of 6.8 attempts per game. Against the Chicago Blackhawks, he upped that to nine attempts. Johnston attempted 11 against the Bruins three nights later. And then, he finally cashed in last Thursday against the Winnipeg Jets, and again on Sunday against the New York Islanders.
Unlike players like Geekie and Point, there aren’t any glaring dips that have raised alarm bells under the hood. If anything, the opposite is true despite that seven-game goal drought.
It would have been one thing if Johnston’s slow start was due to the Stars’ lack of power-play success, considering how pivotal those situations were to his scoring last year. That’s where Johnston scored 27 of his 45 goals last season, and 42 of his 86 points. But this season, even through that slow start in the goal column, there are already upticks at five-on-five that show promise. Mikko Rantanen is attempting (and completing) more passes to the slot and moving the puck more in transition, which is helping facilitate Johnston’s scoring chance generation with 9.67 slot attempts per 60.

FINAL
Catch-up · From puck drop
The Devils scored first and stayed in front the rest of the way.
Early in the first period, N. Hischier let a quick one go from the doorstep, and that put the Devils on top 1-0.
Early in the second period, N. Hischier fired a quick snap shot from the circle, and the Devils moved two clear at 2-0. 11:45 into the second, J. Boqvist fired a wrist shot on net from the top of the circle, and the Devils had a commanding three-goal lead, 3-0. 16:08 into the second, J. Hryckowian redirected the puck home from the doorstep, and the Stars cut the deficit to 3-1. Only 28 seconds later, L. Hughes drove a quick shot home from the circle, and the Devils made it a three-goal game, 4-1.
13:15 into the third, J. Hughes fired one before the goalie could set from the circle, and the Devils were up four, 5-1, and the Stars were in real trouble.
11:54 into the second, J. Benn and B. Dillon dropped the gloves. The Devils carried a 60-38 edge in shot attempts. The Stars killed all three penalties and are 22-for-22 on the penalty kill over their last six games. The Devils also struck the iron twice.
Final: The Devils won 5-1.

Visitors section for Caps Game
16
Upvotes
Anyone who hasn’t bought their tickets yet for stars caps at capital one interested in seeing if we could get a block of tickets together? The last three years I’ve lived here there’s always a smattering of stars fans (evidenced by the yelling of “stars” during the anthem), could be fun to have a visitors supporters section like they do in soccer.
