Record First sub 20

It has been 2 months since i've started cubing again after ~3 years of break and i went from 35-45 to 22-28sec avg solves. Now i've got this nice scramble (yellow on top):

D R' L2 D' R2 D2 B2 U R2 B2 D B' U' F' D' F' D R' U2

I am not color neutral so i immediately saw this easy white cross:

D' R' U F L2

Then i dont remember what exactly did i do but i remember that after inserting 1 F2L pair, second one was already solved and after the insertion, third one was also solved, then the forth one too!

F2L was solved in ~11 secs, while i average 15-17

I use 2LookOLL and the case i got was pretty bad, first a knee and then a Pi, fortunately no lockups (which i usually have on pi oll), just wasted ~1-2 spare seconds on recognition.

Then i got a T perm which i can execute lightning fast, but i saw 17 on timer and got nervous so i had a few lockups but in the end i still got my new PB and also the first sub20 solve!

Discussion What were the first factory magnetic puzzles for each WCA event?

I've been cubing since the early 2010s, and saw hardware develop over time. But my interest rose and fell throughout the years. My engagement with cubing decreased significantly during 2017-2019, which is when magnets in cubes started to become commonplace. That's why I'm asking this question.

Edit:

3x3= Gan 356 Air UM. 4x4 = QiYi WuQue M. Skewb = Moyu Skewb M. Pyraminx = Moyu Magnetic Pyraminx.

Discussion everything i’ve missed

i’ve been cubing off and on for about the past 8 years, but after not paying really any attention to the community/technology these past few years i feel kinda lost. when i stopped focusing on cubing, maglev was just becoming a thing, gan was on top of the world, and 3x3 had not yet been taken over by children(pretty sure the last record i paid any attention whatsoever to was max park in 2023). now i look at new cubes with all the ball cores and 136 different magnets and the sudden plummet in wr times by literal children and i’m just wondering what the hell could’ve happened while i was gone

edit: also wondering what top cubes there are now, i remember the gan 12 being the undisputed best cube in the world when i stopped but the few videos i have seen have shown completely different cubes

Dayan Guhong Pro+ Maglev 55mm - Quick Review

First impressions are super premium! Feels very lubey out of the box (got the Premium Setup from Cubeology).

Initially it was controllable, after 20-30 solves it broke in and now it's in that perfect spot - still super fast but way more comfortable and stable.

Feels ultra fast, super smooth, very stable and CRAZY light - only ∼62-65g!

Best part is the dual adjustment system with tons of options + 20-magnet ball core (94 magnets total).

My Ratings:
Smoothness: 9/10
Speed: 9.5/10
Stability: 8.5/10
Magnetic Strength: 9/10
Dual Adjustment: 8/10
Premium Feel: 8/10
Box/Packaging: 7/10

My average improved with it. For me, best cube under $18-19. The ball core makes it so smooth. Highly recommended if you want a fast, light, premium flagship on budget.

Discussion FTO qualification for 2027 World Championships

Simply the statement above. What do you think the qualifying average will be for top 400 at the upcoming Moyu Wca World Championships in 2027. I’d like to hear a few estimates to gauge where we will need to be.

My guess, if anyone is wondering, is 28

Record Hello to community and baseline for posterity

Not really sure of the point of this post, just been enjoying twisting a cube for the last few weeks and wanted to engage.

Just discovered that speedcubing exists and wanted to set a baseline before I gave it a go. Made a 2:02.11 - avg of 5 with the beginner solving. I guess the upside is there's room for improvement.

So yeah, hi. Any particularly good resources/things to practice, please let me know about them.

P.S. I ordered a megaminx, because it looks fun and I lack moderation.

Discussion Vibe Coded an Timer and Reference App

Thumbnail

I wanted to get the community’s opinion on what features people want.

This came from a desire to have a single app with advanced features combining multiple apps like csTimer and CubeTime, and others. The plan is to offer it free, and GPL3.0. iOS only, unless someone wants to port it to Android for me.

At the moment some features that I’ve implemented.
- Timer: timer, distraction free mode, WCA scrambles, preview, competition style, splits, style is based on CubeTime, inspection time, quick shortcuts for DNF and penalties.
- Sessions: session management, stats, historical scrambles.
- Algs: CFOP, algs from various sources, favourites, searching, grouping.
- Tools: Various tools (see image for basic explainer). But to highlight a tool is alg trainer which you can select OLL or PLL cases and train recognition and timing.
- Language: I will try and support all the big communities. So far I have English, Chinese, Spanish, French, Hindi, Portuguese.
- Scrambles use a port of TNoodle library using J2ObjC
- Uses Liquid Glass style since I actually like the look (with option to turn off).
- Accent colors can be adjusted, and there’s either a dark or light mode.
- Support import and export or data (and import from csTimer and CubeTime)

Discussion Random Rubiks question you might not expect

How do you rank the colors of a rubiks cube based on how much you like it. And if you're color neutral you can also rank them based on how you enjoy making a cross in that color

Mine goes:

  1. White

  2. Red

  3. Blue

  4. Yellow

  5. Green

  6. Orange

Discussion Any tips for D2 flicks?

I've mastered my finger tricks even in awkward positions, and even the arguably second hardest fingertrick M2' I've recently integrated well in solves. However I just can't find a way to consistently do D2 and D2' flicks, it's uncomfortable, slow, and I don't know if ring or pinky should flick first. Can you please share your tips?

Discussion 10 year old reddit post helped me for finally getting sub 60

Back to cubing a month ago, transitioning from beginner to CFOP almost finished intuitive F2L but after improving everyday, suddenly stopped at F2L finding pairs 3 day random timings some under 50 some over 70. Watched diffrent videos(nothing much for how to find pair in any video) nothing helped but suddenly a 10 year old post came in search and then within first 10 solves i get my CFOP PB

Discussion GAN 251 Pro piece design change

So recently I've been researching which 2x2 to get and it seems to be the common consensus that the gan 251 pro is the best 2x2 on the market, however I saw from this post that gan changed the piece design and it was much worse, do y'all know where to buy one to avoid the new piece design and if I do get unlucky, how bad is it really? but then again im coming from a Rubik's brand 2x2 so its probably still going to be an upgrade

Resource Experimenting with a new cross-edge permutation system for CFOP — feedback welcome!

Hey cubers! I've been working on a personal project called PLE, an experimental system designed to work alongside CFOP. The idea is to allow more flexibility in the cross-edge arrangement and then use a dedicated set of algorithms to permute those edges. The remaining steps follow CFOP. So far, I've organized 119 algorithms/cases and created an interactive visualizer to explore the cases and their corresponding algorithms. 🔗 Try the visualizer: https://garcialeguia-collab.github.io/metodo-PLE/index%20(1).html Please note that the visualizer and explanations are currently only available in Spanish. An automatic browser translation may help, although some cubing terminology might not translate perfectly. I'm interested in feedback from experienced speedcubers, particularly on: How difficult the cases are to recognize. Algorithm execution and potential improvements. Real-solve testing and comparisons with standard CFOP. This is an experimental project, and I haven't established whether it's faster than CFOP. Constructive criticism and testing would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Resource QWERTYcube - An open source web based twisty cube

I know you all have been waiting patiently, like 10 years, for a new version of QWERTYcube. It's finally here! Two exciting new features are:

  • Built in CFOP solver that can be used for OLL and PLL training.
  • Trainer cubes - stickers unrelated to the current goal are optionally grayed out.

And a bunch of little things.

I made a YouTube video for it, and it has a GitHub page. Last but not least, a live version of it is here.

I hope that's not too self-promoting or advertising as per the rules. There's no advertising, and my YouTube channel is not monetized.

Discussion Just got back from cubing, which one should I get?

I've thought about getting a new main cause my current one's hardware is pretty outdated now (I currently have the RS3M 2021 Maglev). I have been looking up reviews for these cubes but still kinda unsure for what I'll finally get. My current options currently are the GAN V100 and the X-Man v4 Flagship. My turning style is fast and I try to keep it controlled, so I'd want a cube that's fast but stable for the 3x3 or the OH event. This will probably also be my first flagship so I'd want something that's worth the price.

Which one do you think best suits me? I'd also love any suggestions other than these two. (20$-40$ Budget)

Discussion Are there any prominent cubers that still use a stickered cube?

Realized that pretty much all the best solves are now done on stickerless cube and I've been out of the community for a while and I had this thought

Discussion I redesigned the Face-Turning Octahedron (FTO) icon to what it should have been

Post image
233 Upvotes

With FTO on the horizon of becoming an official WCA event next year, the current icon most commonly used even by the WCA honestly feels like a missed opportunity. I wanted to design something that truly honors its octahedron geometry by capturing a distinct diamond-shaped silhouette when viewing the puzzle from the front, while staying perfectly consistent with existing WCA event icons.
