Kitchen Can this be cleaned or is this countertop dead?

Post image

Hi! After my divorce, I moved into a cheap rental that they usually rent to PhD's in my town. These countertops have been here 15+ years and clearly have mostly given up on life.

An independent guy came to make up the official state of the apartment before I moved in, he already said "These countertops are written off, you won't be able to do much wrong here". So I'm not too worried, even when I've added some stains of my own.

All the same, does anyone have a good cleaning tip to get the water (or calcium?) stains out? I have a few days left before inspection, so I might as well try!

Discussion Cleaning dried Nikwax soap off painted shelves

• Upvotes

I had a bottle of Nikwax (soap for technical garments like rain shells, etc.) rupture and leak out all over my laundry shelf. The leak was gradual and so the soap managed to dry and solidify before I noticed and cleaned it up. Even after removing all of the soap, there are still darker rings on the painted shelf where the soap flowed around the other bottles on the shelf:

https://imgur.com/a/BKmKxUq

Is there any way to remove these soap stains other than just repainting the shelf? I've already tried a soft sponge soaked in warm water but it didn't help. Nikwax is supposedly just a very mild soap so I'm not sure why water wouldn't work.

One of my children knocked a bottle of acetone over on the sink and it dripped on my bathroom sink. Any thoughts on how to draw the stain out or am I screwed? Rental apartment, otherwise I wouldn’t care so much.

Edit: I don’t know what this sink is made from. I’m investigating!

General Cleaning How do I clean cement floor?

Post image
• Upvotes

Hi guys, my barn cat has some bad fleas. I’m getting him a treatment today, but everywhere online says to deep clean your house. He only sleeps in this storage room (no access to our house at any time) which has cement floors. I vacuumed his cat tree and plan to spray it with flea spray. He sleeps on a blanket that I will be washing with hot water every day so it’s fresh every time he sleeps on it.

I swept and vacuumed this floor but not sure how to “clean” it?

Tools/Equipment First time using an ozone generator. Followed instructions, but I am curious; is this setup good?

The bookcase smells bad, strongly bad. I am shoving the ozone generator in each case and shutting it in. The room itself I am leaving a window open and a fan on.

Do you think I should be ventiliating the room this much? Or is it fine since the case is pretty closed? (The case has about a quart inch of space open at the bottom).

General Cleaning House with oily, slight gas smell

• Upvotes

I'm helping my boyfriend's aunt clean her new (very old) home. The only weird smell and its very slight and almost seems like its coming from the kitchen, but there's a lot of wood ( bannisters, door frames, etc) that we cleaned ( Murphy's oil soap). It's not a smell like a gas leak, but more like a weird, slight burnt oil smell....

I have to help her get rid of it. Does anyone have a clue hat it is?

Also, we have cleaned the home and it is immaculate-including the walls and ceilings.

TIA

Discussion How to clean baking soda on a mattress?

Due to circumstances, I need to clean urine from rugs/mattresses with some frequency.

I treat urine stains by blotting them, spraying with diluted white vinegar, and sprinkling with baking soda. This works fine to leech the odor, but I'm having trouble cleaning the baking soda afterwards.

For a while the vacuum upholstery attachment worked great, but recently whenever I vacuum baking soda it sprays out the exhaust. Yesterday I tried encasing the vacuum in a shroud of garbage bags, but I neglected to duct tape the bags together so it still blew baking soda mist into the room (and actually set off the smoke alarm).

I have cleaned the vacuum filter, no help. Is it my vacuum faulty (Shark Lift-Away)? Is there a hack I can use to remove the baking soda from the mattress? Scraping it away with a putty knife & wiping with paper towels feels like it'll leave gritty residue behind.

Thank you!

Discussion Dusting Furniture Tips

Wondering what is a better way to dust table tops, end tables etc.

If I use a cloth of some sort and something like Pledge then the cloth becomes clogged up with debris and cleaner so I don't feel I want to put it in the washing machine.

What do you do in this case?

Kitchen Dishwasher ran with Dawn instead of detergent

My husband ran our dishwasher was Dawn soap instead of actual detergent. Fortunately the suds weren’t terrible, thank the stars for that. However, it seems like the soap/scent was baked into our silicone and plastic dishes and utensils. I ran the dishwasher a couple more times yesterday without any detergent and no heat dry but I’m concerned that it won’t be enough. My husband just took his coffee thermos to work and says he can taste the soap when he drinks through the lid.

Anything else I should try? Are my dishes and utensils a lost cause?

Kitchen How to remove this buildup on the back of my gas oven?

Used some Weiman heavy duty oven cleaner to clean the oven and worked great except for this area. Been like that since I purchased my home. IDK what the previous owners did.

AI said its baked on grease and holding a wet towel will loosen it up... uh yeah I got better things to do. Thinking about using a razor scrapper but dont want to scratch up the oven.

Discussion Cleaning tools/products to help with AUDHD and overstimulation?

Since finding out I'm on the spectrum I've come to find a lot of sensory items/products help a lot with regulation and overall regrounding myself. I've also learned where my head is effects my environment and things get neglected and crazy FAST. Overtime this made me realize, when I'm in the zone/head space to, I don't actually hate cleaning. What I hate is having to look at and touch dirt, it's overstimulating and I end up pushing cleaning duties that aren't straight forward, like laundry and putting dishes in the dish washer, to the side because an area looks too dirty and I don't have the mental capacity to get my hands and self dirty. Any tools and products that anyone with ADHD, Autism, or any other disability you found to be extremely helpful, less overstimulating, and even quick? Especially helps keep a house clean day to day?

Bathroom Is there an easier way to clean these blinds?

Thumbnail

We have a window in our shower. The glass has a “frosted” film on it, but it also looks directly into our neighbour’s window, so in the interest of privacy and keeping the ledge/window dry, the blinds are necessary. It gets this orange build-up on in, especially the cord. The only way I’ve found to clean it is to take it all down and scrub each slat individually, as well as the cords. Is there any easier way?

Bathroom I sprayed my shower with cleaner and forgot

Yesterday morning I sprayed my shower with your standard bathroom grime remover. Thing is I forgot I had sprayed it and never scrubbed or rinsed it out. If I get in the shower this morning am I going to be bombarded with toxic fumes? I have it running now with the door shut while I’m in the other room. Is there anything else I need to do?

General Cleaning I need help removing smoke stains on painted walls/ceilings

I have been over these walls 3 times with Tricleanium brand that’s meant to remove tough stains but it just seems it’s pushing the dirt around. I’ve moved into a new room and trying to get the walls looking better. I’m following the instructions. Making sure I do a full wall then go back over it again. Then a 3rd time with water. Has anyone got any tips to make this easier? Or are my walls and roof stuck like this? (The dark marks on photo 4 are where the paint has been removed but I need to clean around it before I can fix that)

Laundry gave blazer/suit for drycleaning and it smells weird now

To give context, I have my 3 blazers for drycleaning alongside laundry+ iron for regualar clothes and now that I've received them, they smell weird.

It is kinda difficult to describe the smell but it's a bit mossy/dusty kind of smell from the blazers. However, none of the clothes that went for wash+iron smell...

For additional info, i opened the packaging after 2 days.

Any idea what could the smell be and what can I do to remove it?
