WanderWay 2.2 update: destination weather on the CarPlay map, more places to find, and walking tours for when you park
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hi again, r/CarPlay. I've posted here about WanderWay before. It's the iPhone and CarPlay app I build by myself that shows interesting places near you or along your route (historic sites, covered bridges, parks, overlooks, museums), and it can read you a short story about a place as you approach it. Thanks to everyone who tried it and sent feedback. Version 2.2 was approved today, so here's what's new.
Quick refresher for anyone new: it started on our long drives from Florida to Ohio, when my wife Jordan and I kept needing park stops for our 2-, 7- and 10-year-old.
Version 2.2 was approved today. Here's what changed:
In the car (CarPlay)
- Destination weather: the CarPlay map shows the weather where you're headed, with the chance of rain when rain is likely. On the iPhone, arrival time, weather and a rain heads-up share one card.
- Map type: Standard, Satellite or Hybrid. CarPlay uses the same choice as the phone.
- Saved When You Start: when a drive starts, WanderWay can download the route so the sights and descriptions stay with you through dead zones. On cellular data it asks first.
- More places to find: Zoo & Aquarium, Military History (battlefields, forts, war memorials, military museums), Waterfall, Lighthouse, Orchard & Farm Market, Cemetery and Sports Courts. Orchards, cemeteries and sports courts start off, and you turn them on in the category menu.
- Apple Watch: your next turn on your wrist during navigation.
Before and after the drive (iPhone)
- Walking Tours: a 30-, 60- or 90-minute walk from stop to stop. It remembers where you parked and walks you back to the car. Walks are phone-only, and connecting to CarPlay ends the walk.
- Sunset Drives: pick a viewpoint, park, lake or beach, and it tells you when to leave so you get there before sunset.
- Photo Recap: when a drive or walk ends, you see the route, visit stamps and your photos. The photos stay on your device.
- Curated Routes (it used to be called Sunday Drive): a loop or a drive to a destination, from 30 minutes to 5 hours.
- Search results as pins on the map, a new Liquid Glass look, steadier GPS, iPhone Duo support, and five new languages (Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Swedish, Ukrainian).
Already on CarPlay: start a drive from search, a saved trip, a favorite or by voice; nearby sights with their detour times; Hear the Story; Add a Stop and Route Overview while you drive; a map card on CarPlay Dashboard; and a map in the instrument cluster on cars that support it.
As before, I'm one person testing in my own car, so reports from your cars help a lot: head unit quirks, Dashboard or instrument cluster issues, anything that feels distracting, or places you wish it found. Comments here or [support@wanderwayapp.com](mailto:support@wanderwayapp.com) both work.

Issues with CarPlay?
I can’t tell if it’s my phone or if it’s my car. I drive an Acura ILX 2020 & it uses a wired cord to connect to CarPlay. I had an iPhone 14 Pro before this & it connected fine, but I upgraded to an iPhone 18 Pro & it’s so glitchy. I bought the Beats USBC to A fabric cord, and it connected the first time but hasn’t been connecting since. Most of the time it doesn’t connect. If I use my boyfriends phone, iPhone 17, to connect to CarPlay then I connect my phone after then it works but still glitchy.
Any advice?

Spotify crashes infotainment
2023 VW comfort line R line
I’m at a loss. Almost every time I try to play a Spotify podcast on CarPlay my infotainment crashes and restarts. Sometimes it will crash and restart 4 times before it will work. Does anyone have a solution? The FM radio won’t even work when it’s trying to reboot.

CarPlay not connecting on my Pioneer DMH-1800NEX
I have a 2010 Toyota Corolla with a Pioneer DMH-1800NEX that was installed in it back in March. CarPlay was running fine until a month ago when one of my friends connected his Android to Bluetooth in my car. Since then, my CarPlay will no longer connect. I can only use Bluetooth. I already did a factory reset on the radio and it still won’t connect. How can I get it reconnected?
Edit: It’s wired CarPlay not wireless

Apple CarPlay options for LS430
Has anyone tried this one?
Found them on instagram but really would like to see what anyone’s experience has been with it if any. I am basically set on Grom for my 2004 LS430 based on compatibility.

Discussion PSA: If you bought one of those cheap wireless adapters from AliExpress and it doesn't communicate with the car, read this
TLDR: Plug it into your computer, ask Claude or Codex to fix it. It will most likely find an issue in the pairing protocol and a broken firmware updater.
Basically, I bought one of those cheap wireless adapters for Carplay to use on my Volvo. When I plug it, it shows the Carplay icon on the car's center console screen, but only a placeholder is shown in the Carplay UI while the phone is waiting for a response from the car on the pairing request. Tries to mess around with the settings and other methods but nothing worked, checked for updates, it said it's on the latest version. So I gave up.
Fast forward to today, 2 months later. I just on a whim decided to plug the adapter into my mac and unleash Codex Astra on it (Astra is probably overkill). It immediately found a few bugs in the firmware, two of which, the updater that is supposed to check for new update was broken and was always gonna report your current version as the latest despite newer ones being available, the second bug pertains to the pairing protocol.
So then ChatGPT found a new firmware version available, it connected to the dongle's WiFi, installed the firmware update using a script it wrote (this is important because when connected to the dongle's WiFi, Codex or Claude will stop working, so they should prepare a script that runs while offline)
When it was done, I plugged the dongle, and literally connected on the first try.
Here's the prompt you can use.
Investigate my wireless CarPlay/Android Auto dongle and help resolve connection problems such as pairing loops, missing confirmation prompts, a frozen dongle welcome screen, black screens, or frequent disconnections.
My setup:
- Vehicle/model year/infotainment system: [fill in]
- Phone/model/OS version: [fill in]
- Dongle/product link/Bluetooth name: [fill in]
- Symptoms and steps already tried: [fill in]
- Does a direct wired connection work? [yes/no]
- Dongle is connected to this computer via USB.
Start with a read-only investigation. Inspect USB identity, the dongle’s Wi-Fi, local settings page, firmware versions, and accessible web interface code. Distinguish verified findings from hypotheses. Identify whether the likely failure is phone pairing, Wi-Fi handoff, authentication, the car’s USB connection, or display/session negotiation. Suggest targeted tests, changing one variable at a time.
Check for firmware updates using the dongle’s own update mechanism. Match its actual hardware platform and vendor profile—not just the product name or casing. Save the firmware locally, verify its checksum, and explain whether a relevant fix is documented. Ask before installing firmware or changing settings.
Important: connecting this computer to the dongle’s Wi-Fi may remove internet access and interrupt your ability to continue. Before switching networks, prepare a self-contained local script that can complete the authorized workflow without further AI or internet access. It should:
- Use the downloaded, verified firmware and the device’s own update procedure.
- Confirm device identity before uploading.
- Log progress locally and stop on unexpected responses.
- Avoid blindly retrying an ambiguous firmware-writing operation.
- Allow installation/reboot to finish, then verify the running firmware version.
- Restore the original Wi-Fi connection, including on failure.
Do not assume every dongle uses the same IP address, password, chipset, or update endpoints. Do not flash incompatible firmware or bypass device checks. Afterward, report what changed, what was verified, where the firmware/logs were saved, and what still requires testing in the car.

Adding my iPhone 17 Pro CarPlay issue to the pile
I know there have been plenty of posts about CarPlay not working with iPhone 17 Pros, but I want to document my headache with it so far because Apple is being obstinate about it.
My wife upgraded from an iPhone 14 to and iPhone 17 pro a few months ago. As soon as she did, CarPlay stopped working. We tried in her Ford, my Honda, and a friend's Honda. 99% of the time it fails to connect at all. 1% of the time we might get a CarPlay screen that immediately freezes before eventually dying. The phone charges, but CarPlay does not work. Period.
We tried Beats cables. Didn't work.
We tried renaming the phone. Didn't work.
Reset network settings. Didn't work.
Forget car/phone from either end. Didn't work.
Nothing fixes it.
I opened a support ticket a month ago, and it was escalated to a tier 2 person who confirmed on the phone that there has been an issue with iPhone 17 Pro and CarPlay since the phone came out a year ago! Meanwhile, he stepped through every troubleshooting step under the sun for probably over an hour. He had me take photos of the ports, the cable ends, the stereo screen, the case on the phone...we even collected and submitted logs for the whole session.
I heard nothing for weeks.
I called back, and I was assured this new person would take ownership of the issue. She did not because the next callback I got was from some new person who had no idea what I was talking about. Then she put yet another person on the phone who also had no idea about the case but said she would take ownership. She read to me a message from the engineer who had been assigned the issue, and the engineer said something to the effect of "I have no idea what is being asked. What is the actual problem?" and then proceeded to request all the same information i had already sent and the lady on the phone confirmed she could see on the ticket herself. So this engineer was clearly being lazy and trying to get out of the ticket.
I finally had enough and just demanded a replacement phone. She said they had to first try an exact replacement, so they sent me another iPhone 17 Pro. After hours getting my wife's info transferred over, this phone too does not work with CarPlay! Not in any of our vehicles.
Now they are saying they need to escalate to an engineer and have requested all the same pictures and logs that I already sent them a month ago!
This is absolutely maddening. I told them just to send me a 16.. i don't care if it's a downgrade. This 17 model is trash. TBD on how they will respond.

Question Any good AI integration for Carplay and EV route planning?
Would like to use voice commands like : "I drive a Hyundai Ionic xx, make a route with Tesla/Fastned chargers between Hamburg and Copenhagen. I prefers chargers close to restrooms and stations open 24/7."
Or "Make me a route with charge stops between xx and xxx. Include a early stop at a place with good coffee along the route, and next charge stop close to a restroom and a place with good lunsj... or a place worth stopping to see or...."
And so on.. Is there any possibilities for this? Have tried Claude in carplay, Gemini, Siri. No one is capable of doing this.
I would like to drive and use voice commands only.
Car icon covered by text… any fix?
Upgraded to a new phone and when I connect to CarPlay, all my navigation apps (including Waze and Google maps) have this issue where the car icon is centered right at the middle of the screen and is covered by text. On my old phone, it would be offset to the left while the text remains on the right.
I dug around settings but couldn’t find a way to recenter the car icon.
Any fix?
Thanks!!

Question Waze report icons suddenly too large in CarPlay after iOS 27.2
Since updating to iOS 27.2, the icons in Waze’s report menu in CarPlay have become much larger than before. The map itself looks normal. It's only when I open the menu to report that the icons appear zoomed in. I have Smart Display Zoom turned off, so I’m not sure what’s causing this. Has anyone else experienced this or found a way to restore the icons to their regular size?

Wireless CarPlay not working with Diplay app on MB1001 tablet
Hey everyone, I’m trying to get wireless CarPlay working on my MB1001 Android tablet using the Diplay app.
My iPhone can detect the tablet via Bluetooth, but when I try to connect through the app, it gets stuck on the “Connection” screen and eventually shows this error:
“iPhone did not connected CarPlay in time”
CarPlay works fine when I connect my iPhone via USB, but I can’t get wireless CarPlay to work.
I’ve tried turning on both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, but it still won’t connect. I’m currently setting it up at home.
Has anyone used the Diplay app on an MB1001 or a similar Android tablet? Is there a specific setup process or setting I’m missing?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
