Scripps layoffs thread

Trying to keep track of how many stations were affected today, and how many different positions at those stations were eliminated.
If you could just post your position and station in this thread

No wonder they've been so soft on Scripps: Look who Radio + TV Business Report put on their cover.

(I wish I had a bigger version of the picture but...)

If you notice, all of their writings about Scripps and the layoffs have been extremely soft, almost repeating the cushy lines that Adam Symson has thrown their way.

I wonder how much Scripps had to pay for this incredible product placement??

Imagine it’s the same thing when Scripps did it similarly in the capital of Lexington.

welp, just got my email for my buyout at Paramount, not sure what to do. Not sure how to feel.

Like I said, I’m not sure what to do. I’m not sure how to feel. They gave us about 10 business days to decide last day would be beginning of December then I will have until about February to get another job, I suppose I should be thankful they’re not just firing us definitely is a little annoying to clock in at 3 o’clock and then by 3:45 PM you see something like that in your inbox and then an hour later it’s on Twitter as a headline from unusual whales.

If anyone has been through anything similar with a buyout, I’m looking for a little advice on whether or not I should accept this or just hope not to get fired later with worse terms I’m assuming.

I have over 14 years of experience in MEDIA mostly as a cameraman, I started in news in North Carolina. Stayed there for about four years. Moved out here to DC to go to Howard University to study Film further until I started freelancing for all the networks that have came through here. MTV, BET, Showtime, Netflix, TLC, National Geographic etc. Did that up until Covid until I had to get a full-time job which I landed with Warner Bros been here ever since . Paramount bought out WB as most of you all know,, but with Paramount I have been a master control operated the last three or four years while still doing camera work on the side, I was thinking about trying to join the society of broadcast engineers, hoping that will lead me to a better job or equivalent.

I’m almost 40 with three kids one kid I’m on Child Support for I really can’t afford to be out of work too long. I’m in Northern Virginia if anyone has any leads on anyone hiring in the DC area.

All advice and comments welcome, this really has my anxiety through the roof while I sit here at work, acting like we didn’t just all get that email

Recent graduate with 16 years of independent/volunteer media experience looking for advice on breaking into a small market

Hi, I am a non-traditional recent graduate from a top-tier broadcasting school in the Northeast with over a decade and a half of volunteer Air broadcasting Experience.

I was applying to internships left and right both near the campus and in my hometown, and despite being very qualified and even overqualified, I was being completely rejected for every single internship that I applied for. Being an applicant with AuDHD, I knew what challenges that would entail.

Just before, during, and right after graduating from my previous college, I have been applying to internships in my home city, which is in a top-tier market. However, my school is also a top tier school and many students in my school get internships in my city. However, I was applying for non-broadcast and non market internships as well. I also have been applying for internships in small to medium markets as well.

Over the last several months, I have been applying to many jobs, mainly meteorology, and MMJ positions, however because I have many years of production experience due to making and editing my own YouTube videos, as well as being the camera person for my Campus TV station, in addition to being one of the on Air meteorologist I am also open and have been applying for production related roles as I have many skills that the broadcasting industry needs.

Being from a large city, and having lived in the country, I definitely choose living in the country over a large city as it is much less overwhelming, affordable, friendly and tranquil.

I started broadcasting back in 2010 and the broadcasting position that I started back in 2010 I still due to this very day where once a week I would make a weather forecast by through looking up computer models typing up a script and then call  the producer, and I would leave him a voicemail and he would air my forecast overnight.

In addition, I’ve been doing weather forecast on YouTube since 2011 and live streaming during severe weather events in hurricane since 2018 where my first live stream ever was for the landfall of hurricane Michael in Mexico Beach.

And right now, I am working on getting my Meteorology certificate from an online program and I have about two years left in my program. I am open to working as a entry-level meteorologist, MMJ, or in production in an entry-level market while I continue working on my degree, in fact I actually prefer it.

Also, my career coach from my University took a look at my reels, my résumé, and cover letter, and told me that they were all industry standard.

Also, my application process has been improving, and I know I can keep only improving and get better and better as time goes on.

Scripps Layoff Updates

Does anyone have any layoff updates for EW Scripps? I’ve heard a Rumor or 2, but nothing that Scripps hasn’t already teased to… like there will be more layoffs this year (Which one can assume that is the rest of the stacker Stations)

Is this normal (Facebook pages and former employees)?

Hearing stories that some (possibly all) former employees are getting banned from company Facebook pages? I’m not just talking about those who might make a mean post. I’m talking even the ones who never said anything negatively against the station publicly.

AI is changing broadcasting, but who’s teaching the next generation the craft behind it? My dad has 50 years of experience.

My dad just retired with 50 years of experience in radio and news broadcasting. He's done it all - documentaries, local news, radio, late night shows... Where can he share all of this experience? The field needs it!

Making the transition from news to sports

Any tv reporters who wanted to work covering sports start in news? How was it? How did you transition to sports?

I want to work in sports but there are obviously more news mmj jobs. I’m thinking of taking a news job as getting a foot in the door type of thing instead of waiting for a sports mmj job but am worried I’m going to hate it with no guarantee It’ll lead to a sports job

Gray Background checks?

Hi, this is for anyone who works at a Gray Station. Wanted to know how often Gray does background checks/checks your driving record?

Recently I’ve gotten a stop sign ticket and a seat belt violation ticket in the past month.

In total I have 3 violations on my record including a speeding ticket from 2024. So in total I have 4 points on my record but 3 tickets in the past 3 years.

I’m worried about the potential of a random/annual Gray background check on my driving record and that I might end up losing my job if that happens.

If anyone has any advice or thoughts of if they can share their own experiences, I’d greatly appreciate it!
