General Discussion Two Years In on Bolt Action v3, What Are Your Thoughts?

Version Three dropped in late September, 2024 so we all have had two years to play and think! As such, I figured I would throw a general discussion thread up to share thoughts and reflections on how it has been so far. This thread is intended to be pretty free-wheeling, so any and all insights are welcome, but to kick things off, some of the core questions worth considering and weighing in on:

  • What changes do you think the designers got right?
  • What changes do you think got wrong?
  • What changes were simply unnecessary (Right, wrong, or neutral)?
  • What small things still need work but seem attainable with the current ruleset?
  • What are you hoping for with releases post-Armies of Europe?
  • How has v3 been for competitive games, versus casual?
  • What would you focus on for a hypothetical Version 4 in however many years (or Version 3.5 if you prefer)?
  • Was v3 an improvement on v2?

Modeling, Painting, and Terrain Building Ruined Tank Scenery

I have an M3 Stuart that, quite frankly, I built rather poorly (might have rushed/misread the instructions). I originally built it for my wife, but I wasn’t happy with the result, so I got another that looks so much better once I really paid attention to the instructions.

However now I have a crappy looking tank. I want to turn it into terrain, like it’s been burnt out for a while and left to rot in a field.

What ways could I go about this other than just simply painting it to look destroyed? I’m not afraid to mutilate it to achieve a good looking terrain piece.

I went into the hobby store looking for some type of UK WWII desert tan, got distracted, and somehow walked out with a rattle can of desert yellow. I decided to go for it and test it out on an old 3D print and this color… kinda works?!? Criticism beyond my color choice is also welcomed.

Modeling, Painting, and Terrain Building First attempt at Pea Dot camo

I have been trying to practice my camo painting skills, and this time around i have been attempting to paint pea dot camo, using AK interactives fitting pea dot paint set.

The hardest part was to get solid dots that didn't become too small or too big, but considering the size, i think it looks decent.

But was curious to hear how it looks and wether or not it resembles pea dot camo.

Also if the colors are looking a bit weird, i will just clarifty that i am red-green colorblind.

List Building Finnish BA-20 with flamethrower

What are the official rules (statement) regarding fielding the BA-20 with flamethrower for finland?

In v2 i know there is option for it for soviets with +45 upgrade (present in EasyArmy)

However in armies of italy and axis under finnish forces there is no option to take it with this upgrade.

In v3 soviets again have access to this car only under v3 rulebook armoured platoon under heavy armaored car. (Why?) Finland dosent have upgrade option in easy army again

So, what should be the final point cost? Does it keep the recce rule? Or mayby its not tournament legal at all and should be treated as sth special i have to agree on with my opponent

Rules How important is single model basing?

Looking to get into bolt action in 15mm. I have a bunch of armies already based for Flames of war. Could the game work with my men in groups of 4? Or should I make the effort to rebase these guys?

News & Announcements Plastic TKS tankette?

Post image
69 Upvotes

Posting this as I haven’t seen anyone else discuss this, I seen the following post on the general warlord games subreddit. https://www.reddit.com/r/warlordgames/s/1BLLDGNdFX .

I only watched the video of the persons studio tour, to see if I could spot anything in development and it looks like the upcoming plastic polish, will be getting a TKS tankette. I am really happy with this choice, something different for warlord but a few variants could easily be included. Alongside the Italian Cv33 tankettes I wonder if we will get multiple sprues of these smaller kits in one box?

Other The difficulty of killing vehicles in BA

Killing vehicles is soooo difficult in Bolt Action. 3-4 separate single dice rolls.

Eg a super heavy King Tiger can expect to destroy a FA7 vehicle like a T-26 only 27.8% of the time at effective range and hitting on 3s. Even at point blank there's only a 35% chance.

In my last 5 games, there's been a total of:

2 x FA10 AFVs: 0 destroyed

6 x FA9 AFVs: 2 destroyed (both killed by medium ATGs, one fired from a Sherman and other from a Zis-3)

6 x FA8: 0 destroyed

7 x FA7: 2 destroyed (killed by light ATGs and autocannons fired from light vehicles).

2 x FA6 (soft skin): 0 destroyed

So only 4 out of 23 vehicles fielded were destroyed.

Note there was a lot more other AT present in these games - artillery, medium ATGs, heavy AA autocannons, PIATS, fausts, AT rifles.

That's spread across 4 V2 games* and 1 V3 game.

V3 game saw no vehicles destroyed despite presence of 8 vehicles (1 x FA10, 1 x FA9, 2 x FA8, 3 x FA7, 1 softskin) and relatively open table and presence of ATGs and medium howitzers.

(*Yes we still play V2).

Rules (2nd Edition) How to purchase motorcycles or cavalry?

I recently got a copy of the 2nd edition book from my local used book store, and I see it has rules for cavalry, bicycles and motorbikes, but in the units selection sections there's no mention how to purchase them. Are they only available in a supplement book I don't have?

Modeling, Painting, and Terrain Building Which scale is the best? 1/48, 1/56, or 1/72 for the game?

I am about to embark on a whole strange journey of making my custom modular WW2 table. My first scene I want to build is a manor with some farm building and a small airstrip. I am planning to scratch build the a small hangar and the farm buildings while manor will be from Sarissa Precission.

I found that MiniArts have a 1:48 set with 2 tracktors form 1938 (ideal vintage) and there is a ton of 1:48 aircrafts that I could use. I was specifically looking at: - Italeri Fiat CR.42 - AirFix Bristol Bulldog - De Havilland DH 82

These 3 are biplanes, cause I wanted to paint one of them red or French WW1 livery and mount it in a hangar. I think it would make for an interesting terrain on the board which wouldn't be the typical rubble and ruins.

Now the question is: would these, being 1:48 look ok next to warlord minis standind around? Alternatively, I was thinking to use 1/72 scale for, which is really cheap for a piece of potential terrain, but it might look very small.

Does someone has a 1/48 plane and can compare with a warlord infantry model? And a 1/72 plane next to an infantry mini?

Modeling, Painting, and Terrain Building Basing Minis for the Battle of the Dniper.

So I'm in the final stages of painting my Soviet Road to Berlin box and want to base them to commemorate the Battle of the Dniper and the liberation of the cities there in. Basing the urban warfare minis are easy but not sure how to base the minis that actually show the securing of the beach heads/the outbreak towards Kiyv and Dnipropetrovsk. Anyone have any suggestions?

Battle Report/ AAR Autumn on the Front - Seattle, WA Beginner/Learner Tournament AAR

Thumbnail

I said I would, and here I am!

Ladies, Gentlemen, and all those in between and in the extreme, the first Autumn on the Front Tournament is in the books and was a glorious success! 14 Players from all across the Puget Sound area from all walks of life, skill and hobby levels coalesced this past Saturday at Waystone Wargaming Speakeasy to slam tiny plastic soldiers into each other and roll dice! And boy howdy, did we.

So the event was put on by Nat, who did an amazing and fantastic job in the pre-event workup, during, and even after the event! The whole idea was to introduce new players to the game, the tournament format, and just getting to introduce people from all over our schweet little corner of the world. Because believe it or not, it's actually a little difficult to get groups for many games across the genre together when they live in Seattle, or Tacoma, or Kitsap, etc... the Puget Sound tends to make it rough. We do find each other in Discords and Reddit, but it's fun to throw dice together. So there was a big emphasis when it came to list building where FUN was the priority. Nat was hoping for a Beer and Pretzel vibe event with a Swiss pairing matching folks for three games. I'd say he did very well encouraging that as all the people I met, played against, and chatted with understood the assignment and were an absolute joy to play with.

We were given a full packet where we were originally given six objectives for a three round event. So you had a hard time toolin' specifically for the objectives, which I loved. However, if you're looking at the packet, it was a tad changed up with how the secondaries worked. Instead of the secondary being assigned to the specific primary, we were given them as cards. We could only use them once, and had to declare which one to our opponent we were playing. Another fun way to do secondaries. Do you think you will see that much armor again? Is there going to be an opportunity for close combat!? Who knows!

So, what did I bring? Well, that's my display board up top and it does have some extra models on it because I liked the idea of having an Armored Column mounting up to take the next objective and the way they looked. I was super happy when I had one person, outside of my friend group, look at me and ask if those were from a video game. As soon as I said Ace Combat his eyes lit up and was super excited. That, made my event already. I wish, I wish I could more of the armies. My first round ate into lunch, which is when we were asked to walk around and look at the armies and vote on a best painted. So I was more concerned with eating, then looking over everyone's army as best I could before voting.

As you can see with my list, I'm leaning heavy armor. I wanted to put some stuff I hadn't put on the table either ever, or in a very, very long time. So that lead to the M3 Scout Cars, the T19s, and the Sherman. Then I slotted in stuff around it. Because I thought, "Well, if there are tons of nubs, they might bring lots of armor too..." so I wanted to be a tank hunting, fortification wrecking group.

We had 6 US, 3 German, 2 Soviets, 1 Japanese, 1 Canadian, and 1 Indian List and there was a lot of armor. Including a 2 Pershing list from one of Kitsap's Very Own!

So into round one and..... I'm paired with "Ocho" who is playing the 19 OD Canadian List and we're playing Sector Recon from the packet. We, both of us with snow armies, are excited to play on the snow map! In short for our scenario, Modified Quarters Deployment, and the objective is to get your units wholly inside your opponent's deployment zone. I look at my opponents list, and from what I saw from other players, I was not promised to see armor again. So I opted to play my "Death to Armor" Secondary, and so did Ocho. If you're going to play it against anyone... good chance you want to play it on me. But, when I was rereading the objective, I... well, let's get into it.

1st Turn - We both stall our reinforcements but his ODs continue to come up first requiring him to put stuff on the table before me, even though he had a ton of ODs in Reserve compared to my 6. (PC+Base Baz in M3; GI+AI Baz in M3) his forward infiltrating scouts are near a board edge and within 6" of my deployment zone. So once most of his stuff came on the table and I felt I could start popping those units as the LOS blockers made shots from our corners hard. However, the Sherman hitting the table and missing it's Gyro Shots on the Autocar sucked... and that's all it did. I am now planning, to take up position in the neutral zone and form a fighting corner. "Phy?" I hear you say "Why... a fighting corner... there?" WE'LL GET INTO IT. All in all, aside from a couple wounds plinked off his scouts, just positioning.

2nd Turn - Shots, fling left and right. He gets shots into the Sherman and... Crew Stunned. No other shots really do anything to it. And honestly, my list just starts missing shots. Medium Howitzer shot on a Soft Skin with a PIAT Team and the Howitzer didn't move? Miss. Medium Howitzer shot on the Autocar, didn't move? Miss. M15 against an Autocar? HIT! Pins only... The only good on my end, was the reserve transports shoving the first infantry wave into his scouts at point blank and starting to mop up one of the two. My plan to take this corner is working. I just need to not lose units, take the hard cover, take the firing lanes, and not die. YES. I KNOW. HINDSIGHT IS 20/20... lol

3rd Turn - Shots into the Sherman again. No damage through yet. We're up to the Sherman taking around 6 shots, sitting on 3 pins. He's moving along the center line for a push direct into my corner and I'm excited, because he'll be open to shots from the Neutral Zone trying to take mine. Not enough cover for all his units! I defeat his units in the corner and start pushing to bulwark along the road. Aside from some minor hits from the M15 again, all my heavy guns... miss... again.... My infantry though, doing the lordz work and Ocho doesn't like that, from his perspective, I've taken the bridgehead I need to move across the river at the cross point, behind LOS blockers, to take his quadrant.... Silly Ocho, don't you know I read tech manuals for a living!? Reading is for work stuff!!! It hasn't been revealed what I've botched yet.

4th Turn - Och is now trying to wrap his head around how he's going to deal with my transports from loading up, moving across the river crossing, and dropping, worst case, 8 ODs into his DZ. This turn gets really, really nitty and gritty. Technical movements, lining up shots and planning to get his ODs in my DZE because at this point, only the Crusader AA has gotten into my DZ. I, thinking have the high ground, start trying to murder his units and armor... but you would think the law of averages would come back my way... no. No... he's pushing forward under incompetent fire. I'm getting desperate and wanting to at least take out one... of his armored vehicles... and boom! The Sherman explodes from an Autocar shot with a Massive Damage hit. It was fantastic. My hope is dwindling.

5th Turn - Shortly after starting this turn, Nat came around and told us 15 minutes. So we knew we were almost done. And we get to the point where "Ocho" is trying to figure out where he wants to move an Autocar, and I look up an ask "What 's the tough choice?" He tells me he's trying to figure out where to get a shot because he can't move it to score and I was like "What? Just push it across into the Neutral Zone, get 1 VP for it." Time.... stands still. "Phy. What are you talking about?"

"The objective? 1 for kill, 1 for Neutral Zone, 3 for enemy DZ?"

Shock. Horror. Sadness. Not on my face, on "Ocho". He looks at my positioning and it's now clear, I never intended on moving from that corner.... He tells me to check the packet again and I do, and I see what I did. The packet said 1 VP for kills, 0 VPs for Neutral Zone, 3 VPs for Enemy DZ. I bust out laughing. Because now, I'm like "hey, don't worry about it. I still had fun, got to see your awesome army, it is what it is..." and we wrapped up the game. So at the end of it, I had like 3 kills. That's it... so like... 3 VPs, and I never killed an armor unit. Meanwhile, my bodies were as thick on the ground as the snow. I forget the ending score. I know he got... 4 units, into the DZ? and on top of that, I want to say at least 5 kills? It was bad. Major Loss for me, Major Victory for "Ocho"

But now it's lunch time! So we scurry around, look at everyone's staged lists. Aaron's Hallo Kitty Konfederation is getting high praise. "Ocho's" Canadians had lighting and a cool custom printed ground piece, there were multiple planes people brought for air observers. I got recognized once. For a lot of folks who were just here to play silly lists with their favorite models, the talent of everyone's models was on displays. So many cool lists. But also, we were provided with a box lunch. A hefty deli sandwich, bag of chips, and an awesome fresh baked cookie. Time to chat with people which was awesome because the people eating near me were people I would not meet on the table. But, after voting and schtuffing our bellies with food and our hearts with hearty stories of follie and exceptionalism, back to the tables!

I get Joe! Playing a mechanized Soviet List. My favorite piece of his was the T-34 with the Minesweeper gear. We are both laughing and yucking it up as we both had major losses in our last match. Scenario, Shifting Objectives. We look at each other's list and I'm hesitant on what secondary to play. But, because I like the cut of Joe's jibb and he throws down Hand to Hand, defeat a unit in close combat, I yell challenge accepted and throw mine down as well. It will happen.

1st Turn: Joe is pulling his dice. He's worried. We're fairly evenly matched in ODs and doesn't want to risk shots from my big guns. He pulls on the MG teams and the mortar team, but I start slapping them with the M15 and T19s. I put shots into his AT gun and start throwing up pins across the board. Joe, isn't quite feeling it. But Joe is stoic, Joe is strong. He knows that to let me do what I want is bad. He needs to punch my square in the teeth.

2nd Turn: Joe punches me in the mouth. The Sherman, once again, turn 2.... Crew Stunned. T-34 wangs a shot on in. My infantry starts popping out to take the center objective, move on to the board to run towards either side of the table, as a T19 goes on ambush to stop his transport from teleporting across the roads to reach one of the objectives I'm in position to push. Many, many shots are fired as we maneuver and I put pins on the AT gun. People dying? Not yet, but the pins Mason, the pins? What do they mean!?

3rd Turn: The pins mean when Joe wants to activate the AT gun, it... FUBARS! And because it barely moved on the table... it runs right off the table. But that's the only easy piece I'm going to get. M3 scoots forward, slingshots a Bazooka Team at the BT-7, hits, sets it on fire, but the crew is strong, unwavering. M15 is holding its lane, ripping through the mortar team, my large Armored Infantry MG Team is holding the center and laying down suppressing fire. For both of us, for the amounts of hits and wounds we're pushing, both our saves are off the chart. Pins, pins everywhere! But the cracks are beginning to show.

4th Turn: Bazooka Team doesn't miss this shot, finds the ammo storage and cooks the rounds off. But the Soviet Commander is nearby and fires a crack pistol shot at the bazooka team, hit, in the open, wound, morale test, success! However, a nearby MMG Team is enraged, and sees their opportunity, charging my bazooka team from a nearby building. Easily enacting their revenge. Wishing for the same, I send a dismounted Rifle Team into a charge, also wanting to score a secondary.... the 2 remaining MG team members, wipe my 6 man team. I whiffed all my dice. On the other side of the table, I realize I am now screwed, because I have only two units for close combat and one is looking at a full soviet team with 1 SMG and the other is looking at a 4 man SMG team or an AT Team, but is holding my objective. So I opt to soften the full soviet team up with howitzer after howitzer after pintle HMG into them.

5th Turn: The T34 tries to kill Oddball, leading the platoon on foot, inside a building, but can't deal the wounds as the AT gun misses the building and the MG shots don't convert. Howitzer, howitzer, MG.... there's only a couple left... surely... surely this is my chance... Oddball sprints across the road into the treeline against the down units and engages. I kill three, he kills one, Oddball lives and my first secondary is scored! I also steal an objective. We are currently tied. I thought the objectives were sticky, but they were not, so one I "tagged" and ran past was inactive and I only had 2 teams left. So I just needed to remove his.

6th Turn: It's a flurry of exchanging fire but in the end, he charged my team on the middle objective, wiped them, and despite an M15 and two T19s, I couldn't kill the MG Team on the other objective. But also, his T34 could not clear me from the tree line Oddball was sitting on. We were out of time, but he takes it, 5-4. And extremely close, extremely brutal brawl over objectives. My opponent, Joe, and I were cracking jokes the entire time and it was probably my favorite game of the night.... despite what is about to happen. Minor Loss for me, Minor victory for Joe.

Pairings are announced and I get Stewart, playing Japanese. Now, he is one of my regular group members, but we won't hold that against him, and especially in light of what happens. There, is also a tad bit of extraneous information too. Before the tournament started, Stewart found me and said that my list, was the only list he did not want to play. Because he did not want to get to close range against heavy howitzers. Except he's playing Japanese Cavalry and Flamethrower Teams. He... has to get close to me. I laugh, shrug at him when we're paired, and just tell him, don't worry. I've been rolling subaverage, real bad today, so congrats on your win. I'm going to be trying to sprint across the map and try to kill your units along the way. Because our scenario is Double Envelopment and we both have one secondary left, Priority Target. He picks my super camo M3 and I pick his Lone Sniper. For the laughs. (This motherfucker of a unit once withstood like four rounds of 16 small arms dice each round and did... not... die... it lived to the end of the game the last time I saw it... it was dying today.)

1st Round - He throws out his Air Observers and Sniper before the round, and I now know where ALL MY UNITS ARE GOING. I will be playing on a 3'x4' board for the remainder of the game. Which is cool, because sometimes his units would appear from that... weird other side of the board... but I don't care. He pulls... most of his dice first again, and has to put things on the table before me. So, for the lols, I push the Sherman on, take a potshot with the canon.... I crush that potshot. I crush that observer as I wound and he fails his saves. I move one of the T19s on and say "Don't worry, every time they moved, they missed today..." And then I smack the crap out of an infantry squad on foot and bap them with pins. I pepper the other squad with the M15 and T19. I'm not sure what's going on. But I now see horses, blocking my travel path. I look up. "Stewart, if you're going to make a physical line to stop my sprint, I guess I have no choice but to dismount and fight." It was his goal.

2nd Round: What was not his goal, was the big canons firing, and firing, and hitting. For the first time, the Sherman wasn't knocked out of commission in the first round. Stewart goes to activate a unit..... FUBAR! OFF THE TABLE! But the transports with flamers are getting closer, and closer. The horses bonzai and they are confused. This T19 very clearly has a roof. They don't know where to stab the men inside and fail to defeat it... but this... this is uh-oh territory. It failed it's reaction shot, but he was now in danger town. Flamerthrower team springs forward, deals plenty of damage to my AIMG team. He's thoroughly embedded and I have to stop that other transport from disgorging the flamers. So I slingshot, once more, the transport with a bazooka. The bazooka hits. Destroys the transport, destroys the platoon commander inside, and deals much damage to the flamer team. They are now not safe and get hammered. Things are getting sketch.

3rd Round - Mass hysteria, horses and Sherman living together, insane times and the M15? Well, it doesn't know the difference between horse meat and man flesh, it all grinds the same. The charge has failed to materialize in dead armor, but has killed all but two of my infantry squads. The regular rifle team, and a bazooka team. My main fighting force is still alive after a number of tense close combat attempts... but here... we.... are...

4th Round: My Dice. First Howitzer howitzer goes off. Unit wiped. My dice again. Sherman goes off. Two more units wiped. Third Dice, Howitzer rushes the corner, puts a murderous shot into the Lone Sniper, dead. Secondary claimed. Fourth Dice, pintle HMG opens up, another squad wiped. His dice... FUBAR! Last engineering team sprints back to the edge but is safe. And in better cover now! He charges the M15 and the M3 he wanted dead, both live this turn, and puts his men around it so it cannot escape. It's okay, I just pintle them, succeed my morale check. But I'm not done. Rifle team forces more bodies to be picked up and there is now nothing stopping me from making a dash. The M3 with a Bazooka moves to middle of the table and prepares to sprint.

5th Round - M3 with Bazooka gets off the table. VPs! He tries to flame my T19 that killed the lone sniper, it works. T19 dead. He puts AT Rifle Team shots into my other T19, dead. Now his plane that has refused to come in lost it's target. But it doesn't matter. It's a cleanup operation at this point. He gets his secondary with another charge, and the rifle team shoots the horse about to escape off the board.

6th Round: Wipe them out, all of them. I'm just trying to pick off what's left, but most of his stuff can't kill the Sherman and can't reach the M15 or last infantry piece. So he manages to get the M2A1 which was gearing up to load the rifle squad and sprint soon, incase we got Turn 7.

7th Round - We get it. I get, I think a get one more kill? Locking me in at 15 kills to 8. Major Victory for me, Major Loss for Stewart.

I am now exhaust. Despite the fantastic venue, I was standing all day because me and my opponents had fantastic pace. While there were chairs, we were up and moving all the time. So I crash on the couch and we go through everything. I'm just going to post the standings below, and share some further thoughts.

"Ocho" and his Canadians ended up winning, congrats to him! The Double Pershing list took fourth. Joe took best painted with his Soviets. I was nominated best sportsman and claimed the most units defeated... I'm... not really sure what that says about me... The prize support was amazing. By the end of it for my accolades of picking at the prize table, I picked up 2 8.8cm for my Italians and a Chi-Ha for my Japanese K'47, awesome sportsmanship trophy and certificate (which I will frame), and the silver tourney prize ODs. Everyone went home with prize support. Kits, sprues, models, play tools, some people with full starters and armies... we were truly spoiled and blessed. For that, I want to thank Warlord Games and Little Big Wars for sponsoring this event. Also, the community brought kits and armies and other prizes as well. Nat put on an amazing event and I was extremely happy that I changed my oncall schedule to be there. I highly encourage anyone out there, if you see something like this in your community but are nervous, give it a shot. We had, iirc, because I was fading real fast at the end of it, two people who essentially read the rules before hand and these were there first games. From what I got talking to both and the speech one of them offered at the end, the event, the players, and everyone involved fostered the friendly and welcoming environment where they felt like they could come out to an event and learn the game and see what makes Bolt Action and the community so awesome.

So, that was my first experience with a Bolt Action tournament, it was probably my trop five events I've played in my whole life, and I look forward to playing in our next event. Feel free to ask me questions, I know the post is long, but I love writing up my games and leave stuff out, so I definitely don't mind.

Looking For Players New to Tabletop Gaming - Bolt Action Players in CT / Bolt Action Communities

Hey everybody, I’m new to tabletop gaming and just recently began painting and collecting Warhammer 40K. I really like bolt action but decided to start in 40K where I knew I could get a game anywhere I go. I am moving to Connecticut soon though, and was curious if anyone knows about the bolt action scene locally so that I could maybe begin collecting bolt action too! I will be willing to drive just about anywhere, so feel free to list any place regardless of location! Thanks!

List Building Infiltrating commandos

The sweet British artillery observer can be accompanied by a group of commandos. Making the whole squad infiltrator. With a recce-platoon I could double that. How well would it play to have two veteran squads with extra cover save infiltrated forward? It should be a very annoying speedbump for any army. Would it play well? What would be best in the rest of the army to round it all out? For like a 1000pts army.
