Duke Ellington’s memorial at the Gateway to Harlem, New York City
I took these photos at Duke Ellington Circle, where Fifth Avenue meets 110th Street at the northeast corner of Central Park. The memorial honors Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington (1899–1974) the celebrated African American composer, pianist, and orchestra leader.
Dedicated in 1997, the monument was created by sculptor Robert Graham after an 18 year effort led by pianist and singer Bobby Short. It stands near Harlem and is recognized as New York City’s first public monument honoring an African American.
Have you visited this memorial? What other Black history landmarks in New York City would you recommend?

Bring back beach homecoming
I still love this. The backdrop, the miniature palm trees, the boulders, LOOK AT THAT GIANT SHELL! Kids these days don’t know what they’re missing 🏝️
