19-year-old Greta Garbo, director Mauritz Stiller, and actor Einar Hanson in front of Hagia Sophia, Istanbul, 1924. Photo by Julius Jaenzon [876 x 648]
In December 1924, a 19-year-old Greta Garbo traveled to Istanbul alongside renowned Swedish director Mauritz Stiller and co-star Einar Hanson to film The Odalisque from Smolna. Cinematographer Julius Jaenzon, who took this photo, was also part of the crew.
Traveling via the Orient Express, the group stayed at the historic Pera Palace Hotel for nearly 50 days. During their time in the city, they explored the historical peninsula, visited Hagia Sophia, and attended holiday receptions at the Swedish Embassy.
However, due to funding failures and production disputes, the film collapsed and was never completed. Shortly after leaving Istanbul, Garbo caught the attention of MGM's Louis B. Mayer, heading to Hollywood to become an icon. Today, her room at the Pera Palace is preserved as the "Greta Garbo Corner Room
