Yesterday, I was reminded about the beauty of black hair culture.
I 26F invited two friends for a sleepover yesterday. Taylor 26F who is black, and Miya 26F who is Malaysian.
I met Taylor in high school when I was 14 and Miya in undergrad when I was 22. Miya is a third year law student at the school I went to for my masters and Taylor was an incoming first year law student this year. Over the summer, I introduced the two of them and they hit it off and formed their own friendship.
I stayed in the same city after grad school last year and got a really nice apartment downtown. This was my first time hosting so I wanted both of them to come. Miya has been having a rough time; her kitten died at 9 weeks from FIV and her grandma passed three weeks ago. All of this happened during law school finals.
When I asked Miya if she could still make it, she said no. She was really embarrassed because stress and depression lead to her not washing her hair for almost and month. She said her hair was matted and dirty and she had a flight to catch to Malaysia in 3 days and she was overwhelmed with the idea of washing and detangling.
In the group chat, Taylor and I told her to still come to the sleepover and that we’d wash and detangle her hair. She said no a few times and we eventually convinced her.
We did a pre pop and started on the detangle process. Washed her hair over the kitchen sink. I had a hair mask, olaplex and a sit under dryer for deep conditioning. We blow dried her hair (type 2 but THICK and wavy) with my pattern blow dryer. Taylor trimmed her ends.
Almost 2/3rds of the way through, Miya broke down crying. Like sobbing at the fact that we would do this for her. She likened it to a salon treatment and said she didn’t deserve this and had ‘dreamt of friends like this’. She was also sooooo grateful that we didn’t ’judge her about her hair being dirty’.
We told her that this was normal for us! Washing hair, detangling while watching movies. Having friends braid each others hair while hanging out when we were younger. We reminisced about the time Taylor helped me detangle 3 months worth of old box braids with caked on gel and lint.
This experience reminded me of the beauty of black hair culture. Seeing the acts of care, bonding and sister hood from an outside perspective rewired my brain and filled me with a deep sense of pride and warmness :)

I love how versatile i’ve been with my hair this year. This was the year that I really got to experiment with it now that it’s even longer and I won’t be stopping anytime soon☺️

what hairstyle is this called? i think it’s some kind of locs but what would i ask for if i want extensions and to not actually lock my hair
r/BlackHair • u/purplejoggers • 7h ago
I learned to do faux locs myself since the braiders around here charge $200+ for em, and I’m pregnant and unemployed 😅 I’ve only done them three times (pictured), but now I think i’m ready to start doing other people’s hair besides my daughter & I.
Faux locs are going to be my go-to style for awhile for my daughters & I😌

I’ve silked pressed my hair about 6 times in 3 years, and this final 6th time I realized it’s the way you wash your hair. You need to use a clarifying shampoo around 3-4 times. You need to hear your hair squeaking in your hands. I’ve realized it’s the way you wash your hair. My blow dry was butt, ends all curly. But my hair came out pressed. I also used chi silk before straightening but bio silk works too. 3/6 times my hair has actually came out pressed, and I realized it’s because my hair is fully clean. You also need to use 390-410 degrees. Hopefully my hair is still curly.

This is my first time ever getting Bantu Knots. I got them done at Ulta. The price was $71. This includes wash, conditioner and blow dry. I added on a deep condition so my total was $95. Yay or Nah?

Any advice on the technique behind recreating this hairstyle? Trying to figure out what rods are needed. Are flexible rods, wire, or another type of support incorporated into these braids to hold their shape? I don’t feel like it’s the flexible foam rollers. Also assuming that is was braided around the support instead of pushing it into the braid?
Would appreciate any feedback.

Been rocking the fro with taper. All I really do is wash my hair with shampoo and do the shake method and go with my day. Any advice on hairstyle?

Pics 1-2 recent. Pic 3 a year ago. My braider recently did my hair two days ago and I HATE it. I feel like I have over 100 Braids in my head heavy, itchy and sore when I’m trying to manoeuvre them, which doesn’t normally happen.
Also, the colour is washing me out it’s only a number 2 though! Normally I’m happy with my hair as pictured in the mirror pic, this time round they feel less manageable and so bulky. I don’t even wanna look at them I’ll be real, tempted to take them out if I hadn’t paid so much 😭
Anyone got any tips on how to alter them or start liking them lol ??

For reference, my hair is currently about 8-9 inches long, and I'm aware that they shrink up A LOT. I'm trying to get my twists up to my eyes at least, and my hair is up to my chin when stretched.
Any help is appreciated

I got my hair done Friday and it was a little tight. I kept in thinking it was just first day tenderness but it’s Tuesday and my hair has been hurting to the point I have been having trouble sleeping. I’ve attached pictures. What should I do?

Been dealing with a flaky scalp for just 2 weeks and only just noticed how much there was after getting my hair braided. Anyone dealt with this before and have some recommendations to get it back under control?

My hair is pretty damaged, I never straightened it in my life but, I tend to neglect it do to chronic illness and never being taught how to care for my natural hair.
My hair possibly has heat damage from hot water washes and blow drying without heat protectant/ stretching it out with heat. Nobody can really tell how bad it is because of my texture (very kinky hair) however, the ends are knotted. And there’s so much breakage. I sadly have a habit pulling out my knots. And my hair is very fine it’s just not visible because again very tight curls. I was thinking about getting a crochet that matches my texture in December because I’m insecure about the length and want to feel more confident for interviews, dates and job hunting but, I’ve just been inside I don’t feel very pretty.

I think afros are so awesome but I have twists rn. And they need retwisting but I was think abt getting a blow out, but like an afro. Stretched out, my hair is abt chin level so I was wondering do I go for it or no, and how do I do that❔️

Mostly my natural hair; some lazy twists I did over the last two days, Afro puffs, and two braids with braiding hair to be longer than the rest

Feel free to chime in, y’all. But there is just no way to maintain these f*cking lace fronts. I’ve spent (no joke) thousands of dollars across the years trying to find the perfect technique or routine to make an install work. Maybe it’s my head shape or maybe it’s the weather. It’ll look good for maybe a solid 45 minutes before it’s popping again.
Also, everyone can see the damn grid. I’m not saying it should be invisible or look exactly like scalp but DAMN, it damn near looks like a fence. And this goes for both hair boutique lace fronts, hair supply lace fronts, and amazon lace fronts. The entire spectrum , it just doesn’t work for me.

I'm going to be real here: I hate them, all of them. (I have dense type 4b-4c hair with fine strands.)
Those sploingy detangle brushes that are just loud and harsh, the Revlon blow dryer brush, even wide-tooth combs: they just scream breakage, and they pull at my scalp like no other!! When I'm detangling, I use my fingers.
The only time I use a comb is when I'm doing a detailed hairstyle, like anything braided.
I do use the massage rubber thing that is designed for the scalp as well, it works great for my hair when it's drenched in conditioner, but it's usually a last-step sort of thing before washing out my conditioner. I part it in sections and braid them before bed on washdays anyway so my efforts are reasonably maintained.
I also don't feel as though my hair needs to be completely and utterly detangled. Like butter-smooth, "brush a fine-tooth comb through it and nothing sticks". Not only will my hair tangle up again by the time I go to bed, but spending an hour just detangling is time I can't spare and my strands can't handle.
Brushes will always stay FAR away from me. I'm traumatized!!
But what do ya'll think? Tips, methods, routines are all welcome
