It's finally happening - hair typing posts are no longer allowed.
Please report any texturism or hair typing posts you see with the new report reason.
If you are new here, you may not know that the Andre Walker hair typing system (1a to 4c), has been around since 1997 and was first introduced so Mr. Walker could sell his products on Oprah's show. It truly only describes the texture of your hair and gives no more information.
It's flawed in many ways. Many of us have multiple textures on our heads. It doesn't even begin to describe your hair's porosity, sheen or shine, strand thickness, hair density, etc. I encourage everyone to learn about the LOIS typing system which can help you better understand your hair.
Watch Latoya Ebony's video on LOIS here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwMFG4lT4jY
Even this typing system is not the end all be all of categorization for your hair. Your hair's texture, porosity, etc can change over time or with certain health conditions. Product buildup on your scalp and strands can make you think your texture has changed. There are so many factors as to why your hair may be looking or feeling the way it does.
Which leads me to the question - should we require routines to be posted whenever a picture is posted? This will cut down on gratuitous selfies but means we will need many more active mods (shoutout to /u/fivetenash who does pretty much everything here). If you're willing to help out please let me know in the comments.

Tips & Tricks Quick wash day & successes!
A very successful washday. Depending on how I’m feeling it can be 20 mins or 90 mins:
- African Pride pre poo (skipped when my hair isn’t overly knotty
- Shea moisture shampoo (which I hate and does nothing for me so just using it up so I can swap)
- Faith in Nature coily conditioner (reasonably priced, huge quantities, lovely company!)
- Mielle deep conditioner (leave in for as long or as little)
- Bee Girl!
I don’t use Bee Girl unless I want great definition since it’s very stiff. I’m washing my hair again on Monday for a blow dry and haven’t used it in a while, otherwise I use Aunt Jackie’s Transform + oil.
Also: yes that’s a lot of fallout, it’s usually just one bunch. None of it is damaged, it’s a combination of me tangling my hair with my hands (bad fidget- I pull hairs out), the rain and wind tangling it over 2 weeks, and also likely a long term side effect of my medication.
I do wonder if that’s in addition to the Miele product though since they were spoken about here for hair-loss a while ago. It wasn’t this much until I brought that in 🙃

Need Advice How to get cleaner parts?
Hello,
Long time lurker. I've been wearing my hair naturally for 3 years now, trying to learn how to manage it and style it via youtube videos.
My question is how can I get my parts to be neater, more defined? Do I need to part with gel? I've seen Youtubers with much thicker hair do it so cleanly without gel but mine just don't go that way. Or is it because my edges are broken that it is not achievable?
Thanks!

Tips & Tricks For the active ladies who sweat from the scalp
How are you preserving your silk presses? When I try to wear it in a tight ponytail during workouts it’s still ends up damp and puffy in the center. I’m debating on getting Botox injections but that’s a last resort

Tips & Tricks I bought a rinky dink curly defining brush and it’s worked wonders for definition
I have been natural for almost 15 years. I am what you might call a lazy natural. I cut my hair at home, I mostly do wash and gos or single strand twist and I don’t even sleep in a bonnet.
I’ve always accepted frizz and quickly restyling my hair every other day or two, until I tried a cheap ass, rinky dink curly hair brush (the one with the little grooves on the side) and it’s changed everything! I am four days in with my same wash and go procedure: shampoo, conditioner, wash, leave in, cream and gel. Again I am lazy as life be lifing, so I do big sections and can just slap it everything on my head. My hair has never looked like this.
Letting everyone else know, and it’s legit any of those 6-8 dollar brushes with the little grooves on the side.

Need Advice I need help fixing my depression hair
Hey yall,
Long time lurker, first time poster. As the title says, due to dealing with a brain tumor for the past year I have really let myself go in many ways, but one of the main ways being hygiene. It’s deeply embarrassing to admit, but it’s very true. I have lost a lot of hair due to my pituitary gland dysfunction (thanks to the tumor) and I got very depressed about it, leading to me not taking care of it at all.
I have never had so much build up on my scalp and hair in my entire life, and I genuinely do not know where to start with it. When I tried washing it a while ago, there was so much build up its like my nearly 2 hours in the shower did absolutely nothing. I need tips for heavy duty scalp exfoliation and detoxing, and product lists for things to seal moisture in after I’m done stripping the hair of all of that oil and dirt.
I’m really sorry if anybody found this post gross, I’m so depressed most days I can’t take care of myself and my partner is very sweet but is Asian with thick straight hair and doesn’t know where to begin with me. Any help is appreciated, I hope you all have a wonderful day. ❤️

Need Advice I workout 5 days a week in a heated stupid. Any recommendations on what to do with my hair?
I’ve been on the boho train for years now. I love them but I kinda want to switch it up. I’m thinking straight natural but I have no idea how to make this work with my fitness classes. Any suggestions?

Need Advice I really hate my hair
The second picture and last picture is when I was younger and I think it was more full and my hair is thinner but I have high porosity fine hair and low density and I absolutely hate my hair. I relied mainly on goddess braids for years because I hated how short and non voluminous my hair is but I’m now realizing that’s probably making it worse. The last picture I took as a joke earlier but I realized it showed more of what I’m talking about so I decided to add it 😭 but I just don’t know what to do and could really use some advice

Need Advice My hair is breaking and damaged and I keep making it worse
So I have mostly 4b type hair, although it is heat damaged, only a little in the front but a lot in the back and it is low porosity. My hair is about two or three inches longer than my collar bone. A couple months ago I started mainly wearing my hair out in an afro and honestly I feel like my hair was somehow healthier when I was slicking it back with a pound of gel everyday and washing it twice month. My hair was honestly fine up until summer started and I started blow drying it a lot and around halfway through the summer it started breaking off a lot which it had not been doing before. I assumed it was from blow drying so much so I stopped doing that for a while but I still don't think I was taking care of it correctly and it never stopped breaking once it started even after I stopped blow drying it. I also ended up flat ironing it without using proper heat protection which heat damaged it a bit but it's not really that bad or noticeable but that back was very heat damaged and it only curled a bit at the ends. It was starting to really annoy me and for some reason I thought it would be a good idea to just cut all of it off at once so now I'm missing like a row of hair at the base of my neck. You can't really tell besides my hair looking a bit uneven at the back but I'm still just really upset with myself because that was definitely unnecessary and I did it impulsively out of frustration. I'm just not sure what to do. Whenever I do anything to my hair whether it's trying to detangle, style, even just running my hands over it, it breaks off. I know having low iron or vitamin c or whatever could be the reason, I believe I have either low vitamin c or iron, but I've had that for a while and my hair wasn't breaking like this before so I don't think it's just that. It seems like everything i do to my hair just makes it worse. I follow all these natural hair girls and they all use different products and I never know which products are the right ones, I just put whatever I have in my cabinet at the moment in my hair but clearly that's not working. I feel like the best thing at this point would be to keep my hair in mini twists or something protective. I don't like doing them because they never turn out right but I've probably been doing it wrong plus it's the only protective style I know how to do that looks somewhat cute. Sorry this is a bit much, any advice would be appreciated🫶🏾

Need Advice My Afro vs the slightest breeze
Heyy yall, so basically I live in an area that is windy all the time and every morning to style my 4c Afro I mist my hair a bit to get it into shape. The only problem with that is, that the moisture makes my hair extra open to attacks from the wind and if I don’t manually hold down my bangs (big forehead), once I arrive wherever I need to go I basically end up looking like this.
Do I accept my fate and just wear beanies anywhere I go and restyle my hair once I’m where I need to be or is there an actual solution to this? In videos I see other peoples afros swaying in the wind all the time and snapping back into place, then again they’re never really 4c so maybe that makes a difference? Idk If this info helps, but when my hair is dry it also tends to levitate instead of fall.
Cant a guy just have bangs 💔

Need Advice Ketoconozale and moisturized braids
Hi there. I have an active flare up of seb derm rn unfortunately so I’m back to using the prescription shampoo every few days. I have my hair in cornrows currently and I’m wondering how you all keep your hair moisturized, in braids, while using this drying ass shampoo. I’m sick bc I just did my wash day with a protein and deep conditioning treatment and my hair was soooooooo soft but it feels like I’m stripping away all the time and hard work I put into adding moisture.

Need Advice Is anyone super familiar with Shea Moisture Products?
I’m trying to switch over from using Cantu for many years. But I have a serious fragrance allergy. I use Cantu Kids curling cream and the regular leave in conditioner right now which is very mild and doesn’t bother me but I’m wondering if anyone knows if the Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus curling mousse and the Shea moisture strengthen and restore leave in condition have strong fragrances. I chose these from Yuka app suggestions. I’m a 3c/4a girly with bra strap length hair. Also if you have other recommendations that be great but I don’t use any animal byproducts.

Selfie Going natural for interview
Don’t worry, I’mma touch it up when I go into my interview .
Just recently started to figure out how to do my hair and I started twisting it honestly not as bad as I thought and I just recently put in a job application and I have a digital meeting and then later on maybe the next day I have a physical one.
And my mom is like OK you can put your hair in a puff ball and I was like I have it twisted I could just wear my natural curly hair because she’s regretting me going natural honey. I hate to say it but I’m a little bit special needs, and I have a lot of anxiety if I go out to get my hair done I’m completely fine with going natural, but she steady trying to have me look trifling or balď because if I continue to wear a puff ball that I messed up my hair
I’m like are you racist? I’m gonna wear my natural hair and she’s like OK as long as it looks good it’s just so hilarious cause whenever she tries and go against how I wanna have my hair. I’ll be like are you racist? She just stops.🤣 she means complete well I’m just messing with her.
I swear I look like a little boy I’ll look girl and smile in my interview

Need Advice Over it!
What styles are you guys doing to your hair?
It’s like I can’t afford to get my hair done anymore…
For example I’m going on vacation flight itself is $500 I initially had a hair/braid appointment that would be $400..But after thinking about it I’m just like why am I paying this much (no shade to the braiders/hairstylist out there get your coin)
I guess at the end of the day I’m asking what are some cute and simple styles I can do on myself? I know how to crochet but I’m still learning
Edit: Thank you for all the recommendations!

Need Advice Potential breakage
Are the stringy piece breakage at my ends? I just got a trim about a month ago and my hair is already becoming stringy towards the nape again. When finger detangling, my fingers will get caught on the ends of my hair and some of the bottom strands will stretch out a thinner straight pieces of hair comes out. I don’t know how to fix this or what’s causing this? I’ve been heat free for about 5 months now with two major cuts to get rid of any heat damage. Please help me understand what different reasons could be causing this, thank you
