Rules and Info (Updated)

Welcome to The Betterment Book Club!

This is the place to discuss self-improvement type books with like-minded people. The goal is to increase our discipline and self-worth, by understanding ourselves better.

How It Works

We want to read YOUR summaries, thoughts and questions on books you have read. Here are the basic rules:

  • Use bullet points, be concise and respectful
  • No clickbait in title, be descriptive
  • No referral links or advertising
  • If you post/quote a text written by someone else, please state the source.

'Self-help' literature is often critisized for repetitiveness, parroting platitudes and being too general to apply to anything specific. To combat this, focus on actionable advice found in the books and share your experience with applying such methods or mindsets to your life.

You are allowed to include links to your blog, youtube video, etc. However, you may not link directly to a sales page, such as Amazon. If you are promoting your own content, or even your own book, do it in the nicest way possible, by providing value to others and contributing to the discussion. Don't just drop a link on us.

Want to discuss a book you have read? Feel free to use this book summary template:

**Book title/author/year:**
**Summary:** (Topics? Practical advice the book recommends? Chapter-by-chapter summary?)
**Review:** (Did you follow advice from the book? Criticism or praise for the author?)
**Rating:** (Was it worth reading?)
**Recommendation:** (Who should read this book?)
**Question:** (What is there to discuss? What would you ask others who have read this book?)

What Shakespeare’s King Lear teaches about judging the people around us

The book: King Lear by William Shakespeare. Full spoilers below.

  • Lear divides his kingdom according to how extravagantly his daughters declare their love. Cordelia refuses to exaggerate hers, and he rejects her. When his loyal adviser Kent challenges that decision, Lear banishes him too.
  • What makes this useful beyond literature is that Lear has years of experience with these people. Yet he lets how they make him feel in one moment outweigh what he knows about their character.
  • A practical takeaway: When deciding whether to trust someone, consider specific actions: Do they keep promises? How do they treat others? How do they respond when they don’t get their way?
  • Another: Before dismissing uncomfortable criticism, ask whether it’s accurate—and whether the person has a history of caring about your welfare.
  • Literature gives these principles something abstract advice often lacks: a memorable picture of choices and consequences. Lear’s tragedy makes “judge people carefully” much harder to forget.

I made a video exploring this, including a connection to Louis C.K.’s joke about discovering who your real friends are: https://youtu.be/spg6kbpM-5g?si=-ead0Xw-Ka36vSgC

Has a novel or play changed how you judge people in your own life? What did it help you notice?

My 10yr son is an avid reader, and I want to encourage him but what books?

Hey guys 👋

I'm a single mum with a young boy who was diagnosed at the beginning of his schooling with ASD, ADHD, ODD amongst other behavioural traits. He may not be so great with the social parts with his peers(he's very literal). But my god you give him a book he will bury in it.

He's read many of the mainstream titles in Australia for kids. Things like

Diary of a whimpy kid series.

Books by Roald Dahl

Dr Seuss

Ann do

The entire magic school bus series

He's stepped up to Harry.P got to the 5th book and has dropped off I think the context maybe just getting a bit more mature or he looks at the size and struggles to get his head around it. Unsure

He loves books about space science weather events, ocean currents and volcanos. Volcanos stuck for about 5 years straight. Now we are on to black holes and white holes oh and viruses obsessed the amount of random plague or ebola facts that just fly out. He's a boy crazed.

But basically I don't have this background,I wasn't able to read till I was like 14 and I didn't finish school . He's blits through alot of what's been recommended by the school. So I was hoping for some suggestions from other people who just love to read... Or remember some books that may have captivated them as a child.?

Guys need help

Guys, I need some help with something. My German friend’s birthday is coming up, and she loves reading, so I was thinking about getting her a book as a gift.
She’s in her late 30s and struggles with depression, self doubt and self hatred. She’s the kind of person who always puts everyone else before herself and rarely thinks about her own needs.
I was wondering if there’s a book in German that could help her appreciate herself a little more, be kinder to herself and maybe see herself in a better light. German is the only language she speaks, so the book would need to be in German.
If anyone has any recommendations, I’d really appreciate it. I genuinely want to get her something that might make her feel a little better about herself. Thanks, guys

Are there any life design books that focus on how to improve the people who are in your life?

When I was younger, I had amazing people in my life, but I was a child of abuse and didn't realize how much it affected my ability to connect with people. I had some great friends in college, but didn't keep in touch very well. I've realized that I haven't made any friends that were actually good people who were good for me since college. I think I'm not living in the right city, but I'm also disabled and can't support myself yet. I live in a place that isn't very open minded and fairly ableist (although Ive come to realize I think a lot of people everywhere are, especially for people with invisible disabilities who aren't "inspirational."). I just don't click with people where I am. I'm not really sure what to do about this, but I'm hoping to get some ideas from Life Design resources. I've read some of them and they all seem to be about either business or how to stop caring about other's opinions, which I did and now I'm lonelier than I ever have been. I just miss people who I clicked with.

Which advice from a self-improvement book have you adapted rather than followed exactly?

I'm curious about the adjustments people make when book advice meets everyday life. A suggestion might sound sensible on the page but need changing around work, family, or how you think.

  • Which book and piece of advice was it?
  • What did you change to make it fit your life?
  • Did your version turn out to be more useful?

I'd be interested in examples where you dropped the advice altogether, too.

Reading the first exercise in The Master Key System carefully

In Part One of The Master Key System, Haanel asks the reader to sit still for fifteen minutes to half an hour while allowing thoughts to roam.

If I were keeping notes on that passage, I'd record:

- The instruction I followed, including the time.

- Any physical movement during the attempt. Haanel allows thoughts to roam in this exercise.

- What I observed and how I interpreted it. Elsewhere in the same part, Haanel makes broader claims about thought shaping circumstances. Those claims need evidence beyond completing a sitting exercise.

The original passage is in Part One, paragraphs 43 to 45:

https://www.globalgreyebooks.com/online-ebooks/charles-f-haanel_master-key-system_complete-text.html

I included Haanel in this reading guide to New Thought and related ideas:

I publish the guide and offer coaching. AI assisted this post.

I published a book about women’s self-worth, faith, and finding their way back to themselves

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m the author of Woman: Source of Happiness, a book about self-worth, faith, and rebuilding our sense of who we are through difficult seasons.
I wrote it to encourage women to recognize their value beyond what they give to others. It includes reflection questions that invite readers to connect the themes to their own lives.

Recently, a reader told me she had been looking for reassurance elsewhere when my book reached her at the right moment. Hearing that meant a lot to me as a new author.

I’d love to hear your thoughts: has a book ever found you at a time when you really needed its message? What stayed with you?

What book genuinely changed your life? Not just a good read — one that actually worked.

I'm looking for books that made a real, measurable difference in your life.

It could be about finances, business, psychology, habits, discipline, relationships, health, productivity, investing, building wealth, or literally anything else.

But here's the catch: I'm not looking for books that sounded great in theory. I want books that you actually applied and that brought a solid, tangible change to your life.

Maybe you read a book and finally got your finances under control. Maybe it helped you build a successful business, overcome a psychological struggle, break a bad habit, become more disciplined, improve your relationships, or completely change how you approach life.

I'd love to hear your personal experiences.

A few things I'd love to know:

Which book was it?

What was your situation before reading it?text

What did you actually implement from the book?

What changed as a result? Specific results, numbers, or examples would be amazing.

It doesn't have to be a famous book, and it doesn't have to be a self-help book. It could be an obscure book that hardly anyone talks about.

I'm interested in books that have genuinely earned their place on your bookshelf through the results they produced.

If you could recommend just one book based on the actual impact it had on your life, what would it be, and why?
