Favorite Books about the Internet

• Upvotes

Hello everyone!

In order to get some more discussions going about different Non Fiction books we will have a weekly thread to talk about different sub-genres or topics.

Which books do you think are good beginner books for someone that wants to learn a bit more about the topic or wants to explore the subgenre? Which books are your personal favorites?

Looking for thoughtful nonfiction about journalism under threat

I appreciated Gabriel García Márquez’s News of a Kidnapping for its reporting and historical context. I’d love recommendations for other carefully researched nonfiction about journalists covering conflict, political violence, or captivity. I’m especially interested in books that give thoughtful attention to the people involved, rather than treating their experiences as just a thriller.

The Fifth Risk - Michael Lewis(review)

The Fifth Risk - Michael Lewis

It's a great book 5/5

"Chris, you and I are so smart that we can leave the victory party two hours early and do the transition ourselves." -Trump

Well I knew the trump adminstration was bad, i didn't know it was this bad

This book provides an inside account on Trump's first term transition, during elections before the results you are supposed to list people who will serve as heads of various government departments and the previous admin is supposed to help the incoming admin with the goings of various government projects

Trump after winning the election removed every one on his proposed list and began appointing people who you would never imagine to lead a gov organisation.

In this book Lewis walks you through various us government departments, their projects and some extraordinary personalities behind them and the appointees trump admin selected.

It's a very small book, you clould finish it in a single sitting.

Do you know any thought provoking books?

Do you know any books that are thought provoking and will challenge the way you think about the world? I've always loved Yuval Harrari's books for they helped me see history (especially religion) in a different perspective. I used to be a religious person but reading his books somehow changed this. I feel like I become more skeptical now in approaching religious concepts. I am naturally a very curious person and I love asking questions, and hence why such books leave an impact on me. I tried Bill Bryson's books, I love them too, but somehow it didn't give me the same pull like when I read Sapiens and Homo Deus, you know that feeling where you're so captivated you just can't put the book down. Do you have any recommendations?

There are undoubtedly a few fiction books mixed in here that were necessary collateral in order to capture all of the non-fiction books, but I’m sure you would agree that the overwhelming majority featured here are non-fiction. Books bring me an immense amount of joy and outside of love / family make our house feel like home. Hope you enjoy! 😊

Please recommend a history book!!

Recently, I’ve become interested in the Hundred Years’ War between England and France.

I’d like to read a book about it, but I’m not sure which one to start with.

Could you recommend a good history book about the Hundred Years’ War?

Things in Nature Merely Grow Spoiler

Hopefully the correct sub, I just finished reading this book by Yiyun Li about her experience of living after her second of two sons dies by suicide. It’s a short, remarkable book, like nothing I’ve ever read. Obviously it contains the processing of loss, but its honesty and absolute refusal to give the reader what they likely are looking for and want is stunning. I was not familiar with the author and she seems wildly intelligent and literary, and a lot of references were lost on me. But after wrestling with the first part of the book in my own frustration that the author wasn’t providing the book I expected, I decided to continue with an open mind and only to learn. I’m very glad I did. Strangely, I feel like I ended it knowing more about myself than about the author or her experiences. Remarkable, and I’d love to hear from anyone who read the book or read others of her books.

A book that helps you make intellectual judgments?

I am a beginner to non fictions and I don’t want to mess up the book selection.
Can you guys suggest a book that questions your inner belief; challenges your standards and morality; makes you think and wonder about alternative choices.
