Detroit/new in town/work

Hello! I’m a personal & lifestyle assistant and house manager that is looking for a role in or near Detroit helping older adults with their day to day affairs and household needs. I have vast experience and excellent references! I’m not having any luck on these estate job boards.

I have a creative background (makeup artist) and hospitality experience as well. I can paint a face, mix a drink, plan a lavish dinner party, organize your messy closets and take care of your pets. I’m open to all needs! Anyone out there hiring?

I’m looking to connect socially and professionally. I lived in NYC for most of my life and would love to move to Detroit. I don’t know a single soul, but I feel a pull to move there….

Question re. Upcoming Visit

Hello Fellow Rust Belt Icons -

I’m headed to Detroit tomorrow from Buffalo to see The Damned on 10/29 at The Majestic.

We’re staying at the AC Detroit at the Bonstelle, which is about a 10 minute walk from The Majestic. In your opinion, is that a pretty safe walk to/from, even at night?

Note - I’m not a scaredy cat at all and LOVE Detroit. This is just a basic common sense/logistical question. There’s places in
Butt-falo where I would and/or would not walk at night, too.

We were in Detroit in May of last year, as well, to see The Damned. Went to the Motown Museum (which was excellent) and were joined on our tour by another old UK punk band, Gang of Four. How magical is that? Detroit is so legit for both art and music.

We also went and checked out the Heidelberg Project, Eastern Market, and most of the amazing public art murals. This time we are going to DIA, which we missed last May.

Also looking for everyone’s favorite for Detroit pizza! Can’t remember where we went last time - but it was good!

Thanks!

Halloween Weekend

My friends and I are coming to Detroit for Halloween and were super excited to go to Big Pink on Saturday, as the vibes look so fun online. Unfortunately, tickets sold out before we had solidified our plan and now you can’t get one anywhere.

Anyone know a way to get 5 tickets before Saturday? Or have experience waiting in line at the door day of?

Feel free to drop recs for places with a similar nightclub vibe, maybe there’s a hidden gem like it that we can go to if Big Pink doesn’t work out!

Have a fun and safe Halloween everyone!

Looking for a rabbit sitter in metro Detroit

Hi all, I am looking for a bunny sitter in the Detroit area. I have a bonded neutered/spayed pair.

Ideally I would prefer to leave my buns at your place- I can provide a pen, supplies etc.

I was able to find a great bunny sitter through rabbit adoption organizations where I lived before moving to Detroit, unfortunately haven’t had the same luck since moving here (just over a year now).

Bonus if nail trimming is a possibility.

Thank you for any leads.

Apartment $1500 or less

Hi all,

I’m currently looking for an apartment in Detroit but am struggling to find one without bad reviews.

I used to live at Philip Houze from 2019-2023, and even though the reviews aren’t the greatest online for it, I personally had no problems with the building at all & overall was happy. I just had to move because of work.

My top choice right now are apartments in Brush Park, through City Modern Residences.. but once again, the reviews online are quite bad, but I’m wondering, has anyone actually lived there and how bad is it truly?

I understand the risks that come with parking your car on the street in Detroit, but has anyone had actual experiences with the units?

I see the main complaint is that you can get locked out and the management company is unresponsive, but I mean they have an office in Brush Park, so I reckon I could just go to them direct.

If you all have any other apartments I should have on my radar please let me know.

The one thing I absolutely do not want to have is rats or bugs or a building with water leaks that could have lingering mold.

Trying to stay below $1500.. any advice is very much appreciated

Makeup artist: someone please help!!

Hi everyone! 🤍 I know this is a bit of a long shot, but I’m desperately hoping someone might be able to help me!
I’m currently visiting Michigan from out of state. I have a special event this Friday evening, and unfortunately, the makeup artist I had booked just canceled on me at the last minute. Since I’m not from the area, I really don’t know where to turn or who to reach out to!

I’m a recent domestic violence survivor, and while I’m incredibly grateful to be moving forward with my life, I still have some scars on my face that have made me feel a little insecure about my appearance. I’m slowly learning to feel confident in my own skin again, and this event is something I’ve really been looking forward to. I’m 24, I’m trying to have some sort of rebirth of my 20’s.

I’m just hoping to find a kind, talented makeup artist who might have an opening on Friday and could help me feel a little more like myself again. 🥹
If anyone has availability or knows someone who might, I would be so incredibly grateful for any recommendations!

Why not just ask to turn down the sound instead of end the party?

Free Mental Health Therapy

Can someone recommend a place in Detroit that does free therapy or cost little as possible? My mom has finally agreed to see someone for her hoarding issue but her Medicaid is about to end due to the new work requirements and she hasn’t found a job or volunteer work yet. Places that do virtual sessions are very much appreciated.

Wayne State Commuter Neighborhood?

I'm planning on moving to Detroit from rural Northern Michigan to attend Wayne State next fall. I am an adult in my mid-twenties who will be transferring with community college credits.

I'm looking for input on which neighborhoods would be decent for commuting so I can begin my apartment search, since I have a cat and won't be living on campus. I'm looking for a neighborhood with rent for 1bed/1bath or studio apartment averaging about $1,000/month or lower. I can flex on that a little.

Where I currently live, my daily commute to work, school, and the nearest grocery store is 45+ mins without traffic and an apartment of the same size is at least $1,400/month without utilities. I don't mind small or old apartments. I will need to keep my car semi-close or accessible, regardless of walkability, as I have several obligations that will require me to commute 100+ miles at least once a month.

I do NOT NEED to stay in metro Detroit. I would just like to keep my commute under 30 mins on average. Whether or not that means staying in metro Detroit or staying outside and utilizing my car for a commute, I do not know. That is literally the point of me making this post. I have always lived very rurally (I graduated public high school with a class of 18) and commuted to the nearest municipality for work. I'm not stupid, but I am inexperienced in this regard, hence my asking for assistance.

Should we move to The Millie on Brush?

My roommate and I toured The Millie recently and really liked the unit. We looked at reviews after and there was some concerning stuff that’s making us second guess. If anyone lives there what has your experience been? Should we sign a lease?

Looking for stuff to do around MetroDetroit

My uncle moved back to Michigan with his family this year. His wife is not from Michigan and is excited to explore. I'm a homebody who lives near Detroit (20 mins to DIA). What are some things we can do or are must sees. It's ok if they can't be done at this time of year as she can add it to her list. Again I'm a homebody so the only things I can think of are Zoo (Royal Oak), Greenfield Village (Dearborn), and the DIA (Detroit).

Three nights in town, first timer

I'm in town next week for a work conference, staying downtown. How best to enjoy Detroit? I won't have a car but am able bodied.

Not really interested in museums so much as neighborhoods to walk, things to see on foot, unique drinks and eats

Detroit mother with children sleeping in our car. Shelters are full. Desperately seeking help.

Hello Detroit community,

I’m a Detroit mother reaching out because I honestly don’t know where else to turn.

In February 2026, my family was displaced from my late grandmother’s home following a complicated property and eviction dispute. Since then, I’ve been struggling to regain stability while trying to keep my children safe, educated, and together. I’m currently sleeping in my vehicle with my children. Despite our circumstances, I continue getting them to school, and I’m working while actively trying to improve our situation. Today, I completed the shelter intake process through Detroit’s Coordinated Assessment Model (CAM). I’m officially on the waiting list, and street outreach submitted my information. Unfortunately, I was informed that Detroit’s shelters and overflow facility are completely full. I’ve also reached out for assistance in Macomb County without success. With Michigan temperatures dropping, I’m becoming increasingly desperate to get my children out of the cold. I’m not asking for luxuries. I’m asking for somewhere safe and warm for my family while I continue working toward permanent housing.

If anyone knows of emergency housing assistance, motel vouchers, churches, community organizations, or individuals willing to help a struggling family, PLEASE reach out.

I’ve contacted numerous agencies and followed the procedures I’ve been given, but I keep encountering waiting lists and unavailable resources. I’m doing everything I can to keep my family afloat. I just need someone to help us get through this difficult time. Thank you to anyone who takes the time to read this, offer resources, or share helpful information. ❤️

Experiences at Mort Harris Rec Center? Is it entirely college students or a decent amount of community members?

I'm looking at getting a membership at the Mort Harris Rec Center since it's fairly close to my house and affordable compared to most other options in the area, but I'm curious what experiences community members have had there, the reviews on googling aren't exactly glowing...

I'm also wondering if it is entirely college students and I would stick out as older (which I know shouldn't matter but would make me self conscious) or if there's a decent mix of community members there, I know it would mostly be Wayne State students. I'm also curious since I am trying to pursue more activities to meet more people and widen my social circle (allegedly gyms are good for this type of thing) but that's not a huge deal if it doesn't pan out this way. Also interested to hear about where y'all're parking to go here.

Tell me about the public schools.

I'm familiar with Detroit but lived in Ann Arbor during the pandemic so my real time to explore everything was somewhat limited. I liked the city a lot and moved back to the west coast for a professor job, however some of my research is based in Michigan so moving back and working for say Wayne St. could be on the radar. However, I have a child and it seems like even the up and coming neighborhoods have very low to mediocre public schools. I know that the D has improved a lot and honestly the energy around it is so great, but I've got this reality of wanting good schools and not being in a financial situation to pay for private school.

Also, I really dislike suburbs and can't imagine living in one except for the ones that feel like cities (Royal Oak. etc.). What is going on with Detroit public schools? Is improvement on the horizon?

Restaurants for Teens?

Hi y'all! I'm taking my teens to Detroit soon, and we'd love some recs for fun places to eat. They aren't super adventurous but I would like something tasty. We're looking more for fun, cheesy, unusual - not fancy.

Bonus if you can tell us the best place to get crepes, because they're always asking for them on trips, lol. Thanks!

West village apartments

I’m hoping to move to West Village sometime over the next few months, but my timeline is uncertain. I’m trying to scope stuff out now so I can be prepared once im ready to move. I like that West Village is walkable, especially with being able to pass by all the beautiful houses in Indian Village. I’m an artist and like that there are some galleries and artsy things popping up there and in the surrounding East Village/Little Village area.

Does anyone have experience with renting in the area? Ideally I’d like to find a place that has a large enough living room that I can use it as my home studio space, but most of what I’ve seen so far is pretty small for the price. I know the area will be expensive regardless just because of location. My top choice at the moment from what I’ve toured is The Parkstone because I feel comfortable with management on site. But also seems like there would be a lot of fees stacked on top of base rent cost.

Anyone have experience with any of the Detroit Living properties?

I’m willing to stray a little further from West Village towards East Village near Father Forgive Me, The Shepard, etc. I don’t think I want to live across E Jefferson just because it’s a busy road.

Also need somewhere cat friendly!

If anyone has any insight it would be much appreciated!!! I’m doing a lot of internet research and am setting up tours and going to scope stuff out but it’s hard to tell and maybe I’m missing some hidden gems somewhere. I know it’s becoming a popular area so there just isn’t a lot available. Just need to gauge how picky is too picky :)

Thank you!

Walk-in tattoo and piercing studios with good quality work? Wayne / Oakland counties

Hi all, I'm in town visiting home and looking to get a small tattoo and a piercing. I'm only here for a few more days so a studio that does walk-ins would be ideal, in either wayne or oakland county! I'm looking to get a Detroit "D" tatted, on the smaller side, so def wanna go somewhere reputable that won't give me a blown out or botched tattoo. same for the piercing. I usually do appointments for this kind of stuff but it's a more last minute spontaneous decision lol help a girl out, thanks!
