To BTS, BigHit Music, and our global ARMY family worldwide:
We are calling upon our international community to unite our voices for an urgent, heartbreaking crisis that can no longer remain hidden in the shadows: the horrific reality of systemic neglect, overcrowding, and mass euthanasia taking place inside municipal animal shelters across South Korea.
BTS has taught all of us what it means to lead with empathy, to protect the vulnerable, and to use our platform to speak for those without a voice. From addressing the United Nations on human dignity to the members openly sharing their love and deep bonds with rescue animals (like Yeontan, Bam, Songi, Gureum, and Rapmon), the message has always been clear: every life possesses inherent worth and deserves dignity.
Right now, that dignity is being denied to tens of thousands of defenseless companion animals:
- Across South Korea, countless subcontracted and municipal shelters operate with minimal regulatory oversight.
- Abandoned and lost dogs and cats are confined in abysmal conditionsāfacing starvation, rampant infectious disease, and extreme deprivation.
- Instead of rehabilitation and humane adoption networks, standard operating procedure often defaults to quiet, systematic mass euthanasia after arbitrary statutory holding periods.
- Local grassroots Korean rescuers and whistleblowers are working tirelessly on the frontlines to expose these facilities, but they need massive global public solidarity to compel real systemic reform.
As one of the most organized, compassionate, and influential global communities on Earth, ARMY has continually demonstrated that collective action moves mountains. We have planted forests, funded disaster relief, and supported civil rights. Now, our moral courage is needed to protect the voiceless.
HERE IS HOW WE TAKE ACTION TOGETHER:
1. AMPLIFY THE VOICES ON THE GROUND
Support and share the critical work being documented by domestic South Korean animal welfare organizations (such as KARA, CARE Korea, Beagle Rescue Network, and local grassroots sanctuaries). Translate their alerts, amplify their rescue drives, and bring international transparency to local shelter conditions.
2. ADVOCATE FOR URGENT LEGISLATIVE REFORM
Use respectful, unified international advocacy on social platforms directed at municipal governments, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA), and regional authorities. Demand:
- Mandatory national standards and strict, unannounced federal inspections of all municipal shelters.
- Heavy criminal penalties and revocation of operating licenses for negligent contractors.
- Government-funded, nationwide spay/neuter programs and ethical adoption incentives over mass euthanasia.
3. SPREAD "ADOPT, DON'T SHOP" AND FOSTER COLLABORATION
Challenge the commercial puppy mill pipeline and backyard breeding markets by advocating ethical adoption. Support organizations facilitating international and domestic adoptions for shelter animals facing immediate euthanasia deadlines.
4. CALL ON CULTURAL & COMMUNITY LEADERS
Let us peacefully appeal to influencers, public figures, and cultural icons in Korea to speak on behalf of animal welfare. Cultural shifts drive legislative action.
Love, compassion, and dignity cannot stop at human borders. When the vulnerable are suffering behind closed doors, silence is complicity. Let us stand together as a global force for good and demand that every animal shelter becomes a sanctuary of care, healing, and hope.
Please share, amplify, and help us be the voice for the voiceless.
