Developers of /r/Android, fill out this form to receive your custom icons and flair tags.

Hey /r/Android,

We have a whole host of very talented developers amongst us, and they often pass under the radar. Let's show them some love! We're now assigning a custom-icon and a flair-tag to all devs.

The icons will be unobstrusive and will denote the 'type of developer', whereas the flair-tag will help clarify which App/ROM the dev has created. This will help our community to spot dev comments and replies, as well as ask them questions directly. In addition, it will help developers to advertise their product/project every time they comment on a thread.

Are you a developer? Click here to fill out the icon-request form.
  • The flairs will be assigned manually once your credibility is verified. Therefore, it might take up to a week for your flair to show up. Please be patient. :)

  • If your app is not-yet-published, you can still fill out the form (provide a credible verifiable hyperlink).

Each of these groups have a unique icon:

App Developer (Individual, non-incorporated)
Major Developer (Companies: Facebook, Skype, etc)
Custom ROM Developer (CM, MIUI, HTC, Motorola etc)
Unaffiliated Contributor (XDA dev, bugfixes etc)
Official Android OS Developers (+ Google Apps)
Android Theme Developer (Tha Icon, Team Douche etc)
Android-related Website (e.g. androidcentral.com)
Reddit Developer (RES, Reddit BETA, etc)
Google Employee (not affiliated with Android)

  • At the moment, there is no way for developers to automatically update their flair-text. Devs must message the moderators in order to change the flair-text.

Rules for Developer Flair

  1. If you are a developer, your flair must be one of these: App-Name | Developer-Name | Team-Name | Company-Name | Top-level Domain | "For Hire" | (or leave empty, and only the icon will remain).

  2. No URLs are allowed in your flair. Top-level domain is allowed (example.com)

  3. Developers have the option of mentioning their Android-Device info (in addition to Rule1), if they want.

What about Google employees who work on Android apps but not Android OS?

(I should x/post to r/firstworldproblems.)

10

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '11

http://qkme.me/5ph4

Nope, doesn't work too well. I think you're safe keeping it out of r/FWP ;)

2

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '11

haha, that's hilarious. upvote for your effort.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '11

If they're working on Google Apps, they should identify themselves with the "Official Android OS Development Team".

I doubt people would understand the reference over in r/firstworldproblems. :P

6

u/honestbleeps Jul 28 '11

Are you automating the import of these somehow or handling it manually? Just curious, thanks.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '11

I've decided to verify each one manually, as a script would not take into account the credibility of the website itself (e.g. http://www.angelfire.com/antonio/I_created_Facebook.html)

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '11 edited Jul 31 '11

The count right now is 116 developers.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '11

I'm a bit confused about what this actually is? Filled out the form but see no difference to my reddit profile..?

3

u/DeliveryNinja Jul 28 '11

I filled out the previous one for the handset and that also never shows as far as I'm aware. I've also filled this one out so lets wait and see.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '11

The previous handset system was scrapped due to filesize limitations, unfortunately.

Your tag is now live.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '11

You can see it now. I just verified yours.

2

u/richardop Jul 28 '11

I presume it's going to be a small icon next to our names, but it's almost certainly manually added after they've verified each dev.

"the nazis had flair they made the jews wear"

3

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '11

Sorry to see you get downvoted. If you put quotes around the sentence, maybe people might realize it's a reference. :P

2

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '11

do a repost and i'll test the theory haha

5

u/inthemud Jul 29 '11

upvote for Office Space reference.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '11

can't believe no one else got this.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '11

thanks, can't believe no one else got this

3

u/inthemud Jul 29 '11

It is one of the funniest movies ever. I am always shocked when I find someone who has never seen it.

2

u/hedney3 Dec 29 '11

haha wow just showed up and the first references is one of my favorites. well done sir!

4

u/alex-mayorga Jul 29 '11 edited Jul 29 '11

Maybe is due to my aging eyes, but "Custom ROM Developer" and "Official Android OS Development Team" are almost indistinguishable over here. Am I color blind or something? Perhaps add a "g" somewhere for official ones?

2

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '11

They're supposed to be blue versus green, but you're right, the difference is hardly noticeable. I'll change it up later tonight, I'm at work at the moment.

2

u/alex-mayorga Aug 01 '11

The "purpleish" hue make it much more distinguishable, thanks! Looking forward to see actual users with those flair tags...

1

u/CaptnAwesomeGuy Aug 01 '11

Although I support this decision, I can tell the difference. But adding a g might very well turn out to be helpful.

1

u/Tanaric Jul 29 '11

Same here!

1

u/hmwith Oct 22 '11 edited Oct 22 '11

You're definitely red-green colorblind. They're actually two very different colors (coming from someone with verified 100% hue perception).

However, due to the commonality of this issue, people generally avoid red and green as contrasting colors.

2

u/artiomchi Jul 28 '11

Cool, sounds interesting :) I put the link to my reddit profile in the right sidebar, close to the top

1

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '11

All good now. You're verified.

2

u/rapsey Jul 28 '11

Added mine. When does it show up? :)

1

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '11

It's now showing. :)

2

u/zachtib Jul 28 '11

My app's currently in closed beta testing, I'll have to fill this out once I get it onto the market :)

1

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '11

If you can provide me with some verifiable proof, I can assign you a tag now, if you want. relevant update

2

u/reckoner23 Jul 28 '11

Ditto. My apps currently in closed testing. I'll release it in the next few weeks tho.

2

u/TheRealBigLou Jul 28 '11

What if I created www.rootyourdroid.info?

The website no longer exists, but in its prime, I had helped over 50,000 people root their OGDroids.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '11

I can't assign you a tag for something I cannot verify. If you currently operate an android-related site, I can then assign you one.

2

u/TheRealBigLou Jul 29 '11

Well bummer, I'm sure I could verify this, though.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '11

For website users, I assign the flair tag as their website-domain, i.e

  • Llyod [androidcentral.com]

As rootyourdroid.info no longer exists, advertising it is sort of pointless. Still, if you would like to be remembered for your work, provide me some sort of verification and you'll have your tag.

1

u/TheRealBigLou Jul 29 '11

I don't have any source material on this machine and the wayback machine does not have any pages cached (oddly), but here is my announcement of the site's closing at droidforums.net. Evidence that is me in the signature.

http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-hacks/45415-rootyourdroid-info-closing.html

2

u/techsplurge Jul 29 '11

Hey, I blog at TechSplurge Android-related Blog. It's not completely android specific, but there are 2 people in our team among which I only write on Android.

Do I qualify?

1

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '11

Yes you do... and you now have one. :)

1

u/techsplurge Jul 30 '11

W00T. I'm famous now, thanks a ton.

2

u/dwdyer Jul 29 '11

Does "Major Developer" just mean "company" as opposed to "individual"? That's what I assumed when filling in the form but the company is just me so feel free to downgrade me and chastise me for delusions of grandeur.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '11

Yes, if you've registered your company, then you become a Major Developer. If you're not yet incorporated, then you're an Individual App Developer.

I'll leave you as a Company Developer, since I hope you'll grow and expand. :)

2

u/GullibleBumblebee Jul 29 '11

A bit late to the party but I have a suggestion (I'm not a developer, just an Android user).

I think it would be interesting to be able to click on a dev tag that would open, in a new tab of the browser, the Android market page of the Individual/Company Developer, or open a page to the ROM website.

In just a click, you would have an overview of all apps created by a dev or his company, or could learn about a ROM.

Thanks anyway for this awesome subreddit which keeps getting better with awesome ideas like this one.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '11

That's a great idea, Bumblebee. It is something I want to do as well, but unfortunately CSS doesn't allow addition of HTML elements on the page, only modification of existing ones. If it were possible to insert a hyperlink on the page through CSS, I'd implement this feature asap.

2

u/BFKelleher Jul 29 '11

Will this be going on for a while? I'm in the process of developing an app, but no where near being able to distribute it.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '11

Yes, it's going to be in effect for as long as the subreddit exists. At least, that's the plan. :)

If you can provide me with some proof of your ongoing development, I can still verify you as a developer.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '11

Dammit, my app got taken down due to DMCA.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '11

Is it available off-market? Do you have a verifiable website? If so, you can message me or fill out the form to get your tag.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '11

I've got another app in the works. If/when I publish that I'll fill it out.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '11

You do this in r/android but not r/androiddev?

4

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '11

I'm not a moderator on r/androidev, therefore I can't speak for them. You should message them with the idea.

-11

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '11

I personally think this idea is stupid, so No, I wouldn't.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '11

Just curious: why is showcasing community talent in a public manner stupid?

1

u/ackPrash Jul 29 '11

Is there any way to get another icon added? Theres a few of us TeamDouche folks addicted to reddit as well, I was thinking something like http://www.injun.org/tinyduck.png to go along with the icons, you can find most of us listed as moderators on r/teamdouche and we're usually more than happy to provide more proof as needed.

If not, how about a "Android Theme Maker" or something similar icon, I guess I do fall under individual developer category but I dont really code, usually just make things pretty.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '11

I've added a new "Android Theme Developer" category. I'll add you to it. :)

1

u/ackPrash Jul 30 '11

Thanks a ton! This is a great idea, keep up the great work!

5

u/RubenGM Jul 29 '11

I am extremely original with names. The flair looks nice, though :)

5

u/gonemad16 Jul 31 '11

hey me too!

4

u/docgravel Jul 29 '11

For large companies, how are we supposed to prove ourselves? A Google employee can't just go write their reddit name on google.com temporarily. I can send you an email from my work email, though.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '11 edited Jul 29 '11

3

u/docgravel Jul 29 '11

Actually I work at Lookout, but I don't think I could get them to put my name on the web page or market description very easily :)

Sent you an email!

2

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '11

Awesome. Done and done!

Since I've verified you, you can send me the names of your colleagues too (if they also frequent this subreddit). It'll save them the trouble of filling out the form and getting verified.

Great app, by the way. I'm a user.

2

u/docgravel Jul 29 '11

Great, thanks so much! Glad to hear you like the app and are a user! I'll send the few reddit names I know for my colleagues via email.

3

u/mandlar Jul 29 '11

Although I have other apps in the market I decided to go with radio reddit which is currently in alpha. My reddit name is the same as on the google code project. Thanks for doing this!

2

u/maize Jul 29 '11

nice! thanks mate!

2

u/Shmag Jul 29 '11

This is a great idea, thanks a lot for helping developers put themselves out there a little more. Just threw mine in there, and I've got my Reddit name down in the credit section of my app where I had thanked Reddit for some support.

2

u/velazcod Jul 29 '11

Added mine, verification url is my developer url on the android market, if you have questions about my reddit username, it's basically my last name and my first name initial (velazcod = VELAZCO Daniel)

2

u/CatalystNZ Jul 29 '11

Great idea mate! :)

2

u/Kireas Jul 28 '11

I do not yet have my applications on the market. I assume this means I am not considered a true 'developer' just yet then ಠ_ಠ

I've paid the developers fee, damn it.

goes back to coding

1

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '11 edited Jul 29 '11

Do you have a website announcing your upcoming app? Any alpha/beta apks? If so, I'll accept that as verification.

1

u/Kireas Jul 29 '11

No, I'm afraid not. Still a wee bit hush hush.

I don't mind, I can wait until I publish or announce something for a lil' CSS tag. :P

1

u/Craysh Jul 28 '11

I do not yet have my applications on the market. I assume this means I am not considered a true 'developer' just yet then ಠ_ಠ

I'd imagine that would make you a developer. Just not a publisher :P

I've paid the developers fee, damn it.

What fee's? It was my understanding that it's free...

1

u/vwllss Jul 28 '11

It isn't.

5

u/Craysh Jul 28 '11

I thought it was completely free to be a developer but to get into the market it's $25...

1

u/Kireas Jul 29 '11

There's a one-off fee to have the ability to publish on the Google Market.

1

u/gonemad16 Jul 28 '11

haha im in the same boat.. i got 2-3 months before mine will be ready to hit the market

1

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '11

1

u/gonemad16 Jul 29 '11

submitted.. i have some public apks but im mainly keeping it low key til it's ready for the market

2

u/wonglik Jul 28 '11

How to I proof my identity? How should my reddit login look on the application page?

1

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '11

On your app's market-page, or on your official website, just add your username anywhere on the page.

For example:

  • You can contact me on reddit. I'm user wonglik. [or]

  • Verifying identity for reddit: wonglik [or]

  • Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail for wonglik. ;)

After I've assigned you the flair-tag, you can remove the line.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '11

You forgot Android OS developers outside of Custom ROM's/Google.

What about Motorola/HTC/Samsung/Qualcomm/LG Android OS developers?

1

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '11

I was thinking of lumping together all non-google Android-OS under the 'Custom ROMs' category. The flair-tag will specify whether it's CyanogenMod, MIUI, Motorola, HTC etc.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '11

Could we possibly have the flairs link to the market/download/page they provide you with?

2

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '11

I would love to implement this, but sadly CSS doesn't allow the addition of hyperlinks to the document-body. Until such time as the reddit admins see fit to make the flairs clickable, text will have to suffice.

1

u/badgrammar Aug 15 '11

Would it be possible to add this feature to other Android-related subreddits like r/androiddev and etc?

1

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '11

I'm not a moderator on r/androiddev. You should talk to whaledawg and see if he wants to collaborate on it. It'd be easy to do, as flairs are already synced automatically between r/android and r/androidquestions.

1

u/SirRipo Aug 18 '11

If the website I write for is mostly Android-related, would I be eligible for an Android Related Website tag?

www.htcsource.com

1

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '11

Yes, you would. Please submit the form on the sidebar to get your web-icon.

1

u/pconwell Nov 12 '11

Can you add me as a "android related website" person. I am an 'admin' for cyanogenmod wiki. See below:

1

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '11

You've been approved for the Website flair-icon. :)

2

u/pconwell Nov 16 '11

thanks. Sorry about harassing you. Can I change my own flair text, or will that break it? (I'm pretty sure I know the answer, but I don't want to look stupid. :) )

If it's not too much trouble, could you change my text to something like "CM Wiki", or "wiki.cyanogenmod.com" or something? Thanks.

1

u/TimLuther Jan 01 '12

Hi, I'm a freshly minted android app developer, formerly of the Creative Assembly. I've started a new company called www.totga-games.com and released my first app just before Christmas (a 3d snowglobe, which was nice). If I could be added as an app developer, that would dandy. Out of interest, where on Reddit is a good place to announce new projects without annoying anybody?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '12

I've assigned you Individual Developer flair-icon, and you are now free to change your flair-text as you see fit. I've put it down as Totga Games.

1

u/TimLuther Jan 02 '12

Thank you :)

1

u/geel9 Jan 05 '12

Hey, I made the app Newgrounds Audio Portal for Android. I was wondering if I could get a developer flair tag/perhaps get my app listed under the "Reddit Apps" section?

Here's the app in particular: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.newgrounds.audioportal

1

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '12

You now have dev-flair.

I cannot add Newsground Audio Portal to the sidebar as it's not a reddit-related (or very important!) app ... and also, we're out of space on the sidebar. :)

"css" tag beside your name, seriously?...

2

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '11

I placed it there to give users an idea of what it would look like. I've since removed it.

1

u/vwllss Jul 28 '11

It's a new reddit feature.

2

u/level32 Jul 30 '11

Sent an email since I don't get to claim credit on the apps I worked on. (publicly anyway).

2

u/fisherboy Aug 01 '11

Don't mind me, just testing if icon is there.
