I recently owed ASU an outstanding student account balance and received an email stating that my debt would be transferred to a collection agency.
Yesterday, I called ASU's financial department to resolve the issue. I specifically asked about avoiding outside collections, and the representative reviewed my account and set up an in-house monthly payment plan for me. I was told I was good to go, and I have already made my first payment.
However, I subsequently received a call from the collection agency. The representative told me that I had to proceed through them and claimed that the ASU employees I spoke with had incorrect information.
I explained that an ASU representative had personally updated my account and arranged the payment plan. The collection agency said they would contact ASU to clarify the situation.
I'm trying to pay my debt responsibly, but I'm concerned that I may have been given incorrect information by ASU.
Has anyone dealt with a similar situation? Can ASU recall an account from collections after setting up an in-house payment plan? Should I contact ASU's Collections Office directly, and what should I do about my next payment while this is being sorted out?
I'd appreciate any advice from people who have dealt with ASU's Collections Office or a similar situation.
