Living in what has become a "woke dictatorship" (Brazil). AMA!

Hey Reddit.

I live in Brazil, a country that most of the world associates with carnival, beaches, and soccer. But over the last few years, and especially recently, the political and social climate here has shifted drastically into what I can only describe as a woke dictatorship.

If you've been following international news, you might have seen headlines about heavy-handed judicial overreach, the banning of major social media platforms, and severe crackdowns on free speech under the guise of "protecting democracy" and fighting "misinformation."

Behind the scenes, there is a massive cultural and institutional push that aggressively enforces a specific ideological narrative. If you step out of line, question the mainstream consensus, or criticize the Supreme Court and current administration, you face real consequences, ranging from being deplatformed and heavily fined to an outright criminal investigation.

I’m here to give you a perspective from the ground that you won't necessarily see in the mainstream international media.

Ask me anything about:

  • How the censorship actually affects daily life and internet usage.
  • The role of the Supreme Court and political figures in policing speech.
  • How polarized the culture has become among friends and family.
  • The state of our economy and media amidst all of this.
  • Or anything else you want to know about living in Brazil right now.

AMA!

I’m from the UAE (native), seen the conflict with my own eyes, AMA

I’m an Emirati and have lived through the Iran conflict and seen it with my own eyes, interceptions, shrapnels, a drone or two. I’ve got quite a few personal anecdotes and stories from close family members, so ask me anything regarding that. Or you can ask me anything regarding the UAE.

My father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease ten years before I was born. AMA

My father was a very successful commercial/voice actor from the years of 1996-2011, and he got diagnosed in 1998. We’ve been living on SAG-Aftra’s disability payments as our only income since, as my mother is his full-time caretaker. For reference I am 18 years old.

Edit: For clarification, he got diagnosed at 30 years old.

I am a FtM NCAA athlete, ama

I made this post about 3 months ago but decided to make one again since I think this topic is overall a good discussion to have, especially for younger individuals who believe they have to pick between their transition and playing sports at a collegiate level.

I am a D3 NCAA diver at an academically rigorous school in the Midwest. I was recruited since I was a gymnast growing up for 8 years (got to Womens artistic level 8) before quitting and doing pole vault.

Transition wise, I’ve been on hormones for almost 8 months, stealth-passing, and I have not had top surgery

As for competitions, I land right smack in the middle when it comes to placement. I’m not the best by any means.. but I’m also not the worst. At my last meet, I got 3rd on 1 M and 3 M.

prior to recruitment, I had never done dive at all in my life But according to my coach, I’m doing really good for never doing this before.

I (22F) live in my ex boyfriend’s old room with his family. AMA

Yes, this is my actual living situation. And no, it’s not nearly as dramatic as it sounds. 💀
A few months ago, I moved out of my parents’ house and into my ex-boyfriend’s childhood bedroom. He moved away for law school, and I essentially took his place in the house.
So now I live with his mom and younger sister.
Here’s where it gets interesting:
My ex and I are still friends. His family and I are genuinely close. His mom is technically my landlord, his sister is my roommate, and I have an entirely different boyfriend.
And somehow? Nobody thinks this is weird anymore.
I pay rent, have my own space, and live a pretty normal life. Except whenever I explain my living situation to someone new, I realize how ridiculous it sounds.
I feel like there’s a million questions people could ask about this arrangement, so go ahead.
AMA. 😂

I Attend an Experiencial / Alternative Program in America for School. AMA.

My school is a lot different than most American schools. Students have much more freedom, the school is a magnet for alt people and minorities, there is much more community-integrated things, and we get annual semester-long internships.

Edit: This is a high school.

I grew into Döner Kebab business and ended up getting my self a restaurant AMA

🌯 ASK ME ANYTHING! 🔥
I grew up in the kebab business. My father spent almost his entire life working in this industry, and together, we’ve owned 5 shops.

The kebab business has always been part of my life. After growing up around it, I eventually opened my own shop, and now I’ve been running it for 5 years and counting! 💪
From the secrets behind a great kebab to the reality of running a food business, I’ve experienced a lot along the way.

So, if you’ve ever wondered what it’s really like to work in the kebab business, run your own shop, or turn years of experience into your own business…

👇 ASK ME ANYTHING!

No question is off-limits!

I was part of the True Crime Community (TCC) AMA

Title says it all really. I am actively trying to get out of there and I am getting help. Genuinely ask anything whatsoever I will answer anything and everything.

The TCC is a part of the internet where people come together to talk about true crime stories and is very known for romanticizing and or glorifying the perpetrators.

I don’t say this as something I’m proud of, I just think everyone has this mindset of everyone there being a fangirl or some edgy teenager when in reality it really is so much more. I do think everyone there needs help and deserves the support they need. Now go ahead and genuinely speak your mind, ask every question you’d ever wanna ask, that is if any.

I accidentally started a storage container fire in 2021, endangering 2 homes. I was never caught. AMA

I didn’t mean to do it but it happened, I do regret it. It was November 2021 I think. You know how people say “I remember it like it was yesterday” when they talk about traumatic or impactful experiences? I didn’t think that was a real thing until that happened, it is crystal clear in my mind. Whoops

I basically grew up in a funeral home. AMA

My father and uncle owned multiple funeral homrs during my childhood. I often went there with my father while he was working, so I spent a LOT of time there. I would play hide and seek with our dog behind the coffins (and sometimes in them if my dad wasn’t watching lol). And would pick which urn or casjet I’d like to be buried in. I also went to ”zombie jobs” as I liked to call it, with my father. We just basically nailed flower toppings on the casket. I made up the name because I used to joke that I could take on a zombie if they came out because I had a hammer.

I know this is not a usual childhood experience, so I wanted to give you an opportunity to ask questions about not only being in a funeral home as a child but also the ”inner workings” of it.

Mid 50s and just quit my business that paid USD8k/day to pursue photography hobby. AMA

Worked for myself for 20 years. Had built up a nice little client list that generated recurring work. Two to three months work per year.

Job involved a lot of travel all over the world for short projects - 2 days here, a week there. Longest assignments were 6-8 weeks but I stopped them a long time ago.

Daily rates ranged from $4k to $12k/day, depending on work and client.

But I decided to give it away in favour of something I've wanted to do for years. Take photos - mostly landscapes, transportation and local sports.

I judge whether people should be parents. AMA

Hello! I am a social worker in the child welfare field and for over a decade I have been a home study practitioner - someone trained to interview and assess people who are looking to be foster or adoptive parents, or who are kinship caregivers (people who already know the child) who want to obtain permanent guardianship of a child. In this role, I have to use charisma and personality to quickly earn the trust of strangers and convince them to reveal the darkest parts of their lives to me - and you’d be surprised at how often it seems like they’ve just been waiting for a chance to tell someone. I’ve had some insane conversations, uncovered some crazy information, and have even had to make reports on people who have divulged crimes to me. I think I have some interesting stories and insight to provide, so AMA!
