My best friend (26f) and I (26m) out of convenience AMA

Jessica and I have been best friends for 10 years. She has a 4-year-old daughter who I help raise, and neither of us have any romantic feelings for the other. We’re married because it makes sense for us and our situation.
we have very “traditional roles” I handle the finances, and she takes care of the house.

I judge whether people should be parents. AMA

Hello! I am a social worker in the child welfare field and for over a decade I have been a home study practitioner - someone trained to interview and assess people who are looking to be foster or adoptive parents, or who are kinship caregivers (people who already know the child) who want to obtain permanent guardianship of a child. In this role, I have to use charisma and personality to quickly earn the trust of strangers and convince them to reveal the darkest parts of their lives to me - and you’d be surprised at how often it seems like they’ve just been waiting for a chance to tell someone. I’ve had some insane conversations, uncovered some crazy information, and have even had to make reports on people who have divulged crimes to me. I think I have some interesting stories and insight to provide, so AMA!

I (22F) live in my ex boyfriend’s old room with his family. AMA

Yes, this is my actual living situation. And no, it’s not nearly as dramatic as it sounds. 💀
A few months ago, I moved out of my parents’ house and into my ex-boyfriend’s childhood bedroom. He moved away for law school, and I essentially took his place in the house.
So now I live with his mom and younger sister.
Here’s where it gets interesting:
My ex and I are still friends. His family and I are genuinely close. His mom is technically my landlord, his sister is my roommate, and I have an entirely different boyfriend.
And somehow? Nobody thinks this is weird anymore.
I pay rent, have my own space, and live a pretty normal life. Except whenever I explain my living situation to someone new, I realize how ridiculous it sounds.
I feel like there’s a million questions people could ask about this arrangement, so go ahead.
AMA. 😂

Guess the title summerizes my life in less than 40 words. Feel free to ask me anything.

I am not sure if this is even interesting or if I am doing this the wrong way. English is not my first language, so please apologize any spelling or grammatival mistakes I´ll do while answering the questions.

I got paralized because i Jumped into a lake in 2020. Luckily some of my friends saved me from drowning. The lake was shallow and i hit a stone with my head. So after that I pushed myself up to the surface where I was able to scream: "I cant stand up", before going down again. This happend around 5 times before a friend of mine was realizing I am not joiking. And Yes, I was drunk.

My father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease ten years before I was born. AMA

• Upvotes

My father was a very successful commercial/voice actor from the years of 1996-2011, and he got diagnosed in 1998. We’ve been living on SAG-Aftra’s disability payments as our only income since, as my mother is his full-time caretaker. For reference I am 18 years old.

Edit: For clarification, he got diagnosed at 30 years old.

I basically grew up in a funeral home. AMA

My father and uncle owned multiple funeral homrs during my childhood. I often went there with my father while he was working, so I spent a LOT of time there. I would play hide and seek with our dog behind the coffins (and sometimes in them if my dad wasn’t watching lol). And would pick which urn or casjet I’d like to be buried in. I also went to ”zombie jobs” as I liked to call it, with my father. We just basically nailed flower toppings on the casket. I made up the name because I used to joke that I could take on a zombie if they came out because I had a hammer.

I know this is not a usual childhood experience, so I wanted to give you an opportunity to ask questions about not only being in a funeral home as a child but also the ”inner workings” of it.

I got laid off yesterday with 550 other employees. We didn't get a meeting, an email or even a message over MS teams. We all lost access to our official accounts and got forcefully signed out of the computers. The HR stayed silent till the end of the day and then sent emails on our personal email IDs. AMA

I’m an Emirati and have lived through the Iran conflict and seen it with my own eyes, interceptions, shrapnels, a drone or two. I’ve got quite a few personal anecdotes and stories from close family members, so ask me anything regarding that. Or you can ask me anything regarding the UAE.

I played lead guitar in a 1960s Georgia garage-rock band. We pressed just 500 copies of our 45, won a TV talent contest, and our music was rediscovered decades later. AMA!

Back in the 1960s, I played lead guitar in a Georgia garage-rock band called Red Beard & The Pirates.

We recorded an original single, "Go On Leave," backed with "Don't Be A Loser," at Atlanta Sound Recording Studios. The record was released on the small Gaye Records label, and only 500 copies were pressed.

We sold the records ourselves, never imagining that decades later anyone would still be interested in our music.

During those years, we also won a television talent competition called "Stars of Tomorrow" on Atlanta's Channel 11. Our prize was a trip to New York City to audition for the Ted Mack Amateur Hour.

Eventually, the band went its separate ways, but the recording had a life of its own.

Years later, "Go On Leave" appeared on garage-rock compilations, including Crypt Records' Back From The Grave, Gearfab's Psychedelic States: Georgia in the Sixties, and a compilation associated with Keb Darge and Cut Chemist.

Now, nearly six decades after we recorded it, I'm revisiting the original music and preserving that small piece of Georgia rock-and-roll history.

For anyone curious about my music and the recordings I'm sharing today, here's my Bandcamp page:

https://weaverstudios.bandcamp.com

I'd especially enjoy hearing from anyone who remembers the garage-band scene of the 1960s or collects obscure American 45s.

Were any of you playing in local bands back then, or have you discovered forgotten garage-rock records from that era?

I'm now 77 years old, and it's remarkable to see people still interested in music we recorded nearly 60 years ago.

I'm happy to answer questions about recording a 45 in the 1960s, the Georgia garage-rock scene, our television appearance, the equipment we used, and what happened to the band afterward.

Ask me anything!

I am a former "gifted child" AMA

This isn't me boasting or anything, its an accurate label to discribe my circumstance. I am the textbook deffinition of a "gifted child" yah know, like a kid in a crappy childrens story. I got good grades, teachers told my parents "this kids got potential", got into all the honors classes etc. Well to put it bluntly that REALLY messed up my development. I developed anxiety disorders at like, two so you could imagine what all the constant, "you're a really smart kid" did to my mental image. I never felt smart and it caused me to have severe imposter syndrome. I am now 18 years old with my grades in the toilet and any hope of getting into any college CRUSHED (not that I want to anyway).

EDIT: I don't want to go to college. I am perfectly fine with going into a trade and much prefer it that way anyways. I put that anecdote in as a joke. the reason I don't want to persue higher education is because I just don't like school. its unrelated to my grades or anything.

I was part of the True Crime Community (TCC) AMA

Title says it all really. I am actively trying to get out of there and I am getting help. Genuinely ask anything whatsoever I will answer anything and everything.

The TCC is a part of the internet where people come together to talk about true crime stories and is very known for romanticizing and or glorifying the perpetrators.

I don’t say this as something I’m proud of, I just think everyone has this mindset of everyone there being a fangirl or some edgy teenager when in reality it really is so much more. I do think everyone there needs help and deserves the support they need. Now go ahead and genuinely speak your mind, ask every question you’d ever wanna ask, that is if any.

My school is a lot different than most American schools. Students have much more freedom, the school is a magnet for alt people and minorities, there is much more community-integrated things, and we get annual semester-long internships.

Edit: This is a high school.

I am a FtM NCAA athlete, ama

I made this post about 3 months ago but decided to make one again since I think this topic is overall a good discussion to have, especially for younger individuals who believe they have to pick between their transition and playing sports at a collegiate level.

I am a D3 NCAA diver at an academically rigorous school in the Midwest. I was recruited since I was a gymnast growing up for 8 years (got to Womens artistic level 8) before quitting and doing pole vault.

Transition wise, I’ve been on hormones for almost 8 months, stealth-passing, and I have not had top surgery

As for competitions, I land right smack in the middle when it comes to placement. I’m not the best by any means.. but I’m also not the worst. At my last meet, I got 3rd on 1 M and 3 M.

prior to recruitment, I had never done dive at all in my life But according to my coach, I’m doing really good for never doing this before.

I don't eat. AMA.

About 7.5 years ago, I (27F) started losing the ability to eat and drink. Now my entire digestive tract is partially paralyzed. I relied on a feeding tube for several years, and then last year I got worse and stopped tolerating feeds, and had to switch to Total Parenteral Nutrition -- TPN, or IV nutrition that goes straight into your bloodstream. AMA if you'd like :)

PS -- I also have a lot of chronic fatigue and sometimes sleep for several hours at once, so I may not respond to comments immediately, but I will get to them!

AMA I am a pastor’s daughter

I grew up attending what is known as a a IFB church (independent fundamental Baptist)

Growing up we had mandatory church on Wednesdays and Sunday and plenty of additional church events.

In 6th grade my peers and I attended a purity ball where we pledged to our father’s to stay pure till marriage.

We were not allowed any secular music or tv shows but still snuck it occasionally (I loved Degrassi)

Eventually I went to college and had a bit of a wild phase and left the church.

AMA.
