Questions/Advice Extreme heart palpitations on every ADHD medication

• Upvotes

I've been trying different ADHD meds for 9 months, both stimulants and non-stimulants, at various doses, and I keep experiencing heart palpitations regardless of the medication or dosage.

I'm currently on atomoxetine, and my resting heart rate is 113 bpm.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Did you find anything that helped?

I'm not dehydrated, I eat regular protein-rich meals, and I've completely cut out caffeine, including black tea. Nothing seems to help.

I'd really appreciate hearing your experiences!

Medication Meijer Didn't Give Prescription?

• Upvotes

So, I picked up 3 meds for my son. He takes a long acting Ritalin in the morning, short acting one midday for school, and intuniv at night. I we to drive thru on a Wednesday and took the stapled bag home.

My husband opened the bag on Saturday and didn't say anything (cause he figured all was fine), but told me on Monday that there were only 2 bottles in the bag. No midday Ritalin.

My husband has no reason to like take it or hide it. Lol It has been stupid dealing with the doc and insurance to get a lost med request, so I asked Meijer to do a count. They said all is well. Is it possible they like scanned the bottle and then didn't put it in the bag? Is this worth trying to escalate, or keep going through the doc to approve refill?

Medication Why do people need a higher dose than others?

• Upvotes

I’ve been taking 15 mg once a day for a very long time. I don’t feel like I need an increase, but I also drink coffee after I take my dose and several more cups of coffee throughout the day. Do other people combine their coffee with their medication? What kind of supplements do you take?

Questions/Advice Hyperactive and focused at the same time?

• Upvotes

I've been having this issue lately. When I take my meds, I have the ability to focus, but I just can't sit still. It can get in the way of studying for school and cause issues in class when I need to stay seated for an hour or more at a time. Has anyone else experienced this? If so, what do you do?

Questions/Advice Out of pocket payment for Meds

• Upvotes

Hi all so I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of six and from elementary all the way up until high school school. I was on my meds. That was until I got kicked off my mom’s insurance. And throughout most of my adulthood, I have not been on any meds and it’s been very difficult last year. I was finally able to get medical insurance that I could afford . But the renewal is coming up next month and I’m afraid my premium might change and I won’t be able to afford medical insurance anymore. I’ve been back on ADHD meds this entire year and my life has been amazing. I’m so organized. I get things done. I don’t constantly feel foggy , or tired , and I don’t procrastinate like I used to . So I’m trying to see if anyone here is paying for their meds out of pocket. How much do you pay ? I’ve seen there’s several ADHD care if you don’t have insurance like Medvidi or Talkiatry . Has anyone used these? Also, are we able to use GoodRx for discounts on our meds ? I’m just trying to get my ducks in order in case I I no longer qualify for medical insurance . Thanks !

Medication Should I take my Adderall if my heart is already beating fast due to not being able to sleep well the night before?

• Upvotes

Just wondering if anyone else experiences insomnia and also takes stimulant meds for ADHD and has some advice for what to do in this situation. I normally take my Adderall every day but last night I slept like shit and when I woke up my heart was already racing so I’m not sure if I should skip my dose or not. I don’t feel tired right now but I have class later today so maybe I should skip the XR dose and just take an IR later in the day?

Seeking Empathy I hate this i hate this

• Upvotes

Idk if anyone else can relate but i fucking hate having adhd. I wish I was normal. I hate that i have to explain myself on why im not graspin things in school as fast as others. Why it takes me multiple tries to fully understand something it takes a normal person less time. My mind is never at rest. I sometimes wish you could SEE adhd that way people wouldn’t think im so fucking dumb and restless. Btw im fine. Im not gonna hurt myself. I js need to vent.

Questions/Advice Sensory issues drying off after shower

• Upvotes

Wondering if anyone else struggled with this. (And ive tried moisturizer, it doesn’t help much). Every time I get out of the shower my legs get very itchy, but it’s not the itch that you relieve by scratching. It’s this really bad icky prickly feeling I can’t really describe. It usually fades after 15-20 minutes, but man, those 15 minutes can be literal hell. I also have this weird symptom associated with it where I can’t look at anything on the floor or anything that’s dirty. Idk please tell me I’m not crazy 😭

Questions/Advice Sleep issues

• Upvotes

So I have been diagnosed with inattentive ADHD. I noticed that even before, I have a very hard time sleeping. I intend to sleep early so that I can wake up early. If I sleep by 8 pm to 9 pm, I expect to sleep until 5 am at the latest. However, I notice I am up from midnight to 3 am. This has been extremely frustrating because I either have to wake up later or have less sleep. If anyone has faced this problem while dealing with inattentive ADHD and was able to solve to get great consistent sleep, I would appreciate the strategies that were used.

Medication Starting Ritalin 10 mg

• Upvotes

Hello. It’s my first day on Ritalin 10 mg 3x time a day. I’m taking albo Cymbalta 60 mg for depression. Morning dose caused me being speedy and very focused, but the second dose caused me „spaced out” and sleepy. I also have very little thoughts. Is it normal? I supposed it will prevent me from being sleepy? Will it pass with time?

Questions/Advice Wet hands aversion?

I'm not sure if this is an ADHD thing or not, but I can't stand to have wet hands. Just thinking about washing the dishes (by hand) makes me shudder. I don't even like washing my hands and will use hand sanitizer instead, if I have the option. I guess it's a sensory thing. Lots of hand soaps dry out my hands and leave them feeling gross. (And lotions are a whole other issue.) Now that I think about it, I don't love having wet feet either, but that's not as common an issue. I don't have a problem with showers, though. Apparently if my whole body is wet it's not as disgusting?

I've always had this aversion, but my challenges with it became much more noticeable to me during COVID because we were told to wash our hands so often and for at least 20 seconds each time. I REALLY struggled with that. Hand sanitizer has saved me from the ick many times. Does anyone else have this problem? Just wondering if this is something that connects back to my ADHD as I was diagnosed at 50 and have been looking back at my life trying to pick out which of my "quirks" are ADHD related.

Medication Adderal XR made me sleepy during the day and then I couldnt sleep at night

For context, I just got diagnosed with ADHD and I've never taken a stimulant before. Yesterday I took my first dose of Adderal XR 20 mg and I was very sleepy during the day and at night I couldn't fall asleep at all. Is this normal and should I just keep taking my meds in the hopes that the symptoms subside?

Questions/Advice what do i do

i'm a 20 year old university student in aircraft engineering and i did 2 years in business prior to that.

i have been told i have adhd all my life but never got it tested or diagnosed. the first couple weeks everything was fine and i was academically well but out of nowhere my focus stopped and i try so hard so incredibly hard to study and remember terms and part numbers and everything in the moment seems perfect and it all makes sense then out of nowhere my mind is black.

i picked aircraft engineering because its a one year course and its really demanded in the city and province where i am in canada. but all the projects and practicals i cant seem to memorize or understand even though i am really gifted in other aspects like writing poems and articles and design. it all just never felt like something i can make a career out of.

i had high 80s in high school due to unfortunately cheating my way through exams which i am not proud of at all. i'm not stupid. i know i'm really smart but my brain doesnt allow me to focus or lock in with anything study wise.

this was the same issue when i was in business in one of the best universities in canada and now i just really dont know what to do.

Questions/Advice How to motivate oneself without the promise of adrenaline?

Hi, I'm an Audhd person who is going through some life changes rn (finishing uni, starting to function in my chosen career, adulthood, all that jazz) and it's harder and harder to actually motivate myself to do stuff. I want to work out, I want to do creative things but even if I feel like doing them, I simply stop because they do not offer immediate reward. My main go-to motivation technique is focusing on the negative feelings - if you don't do it, you'll be unhealthy, you'll disappoint people etc etc, however, it just doesn't work and not only I don't do the things I wanted to, I also feel awful.

How do you combat that? I am in therapy and I am on meds (Medikinet 20mg) but I'm also seeking some perspective from other folks with ADHD.

Questions/Advice going off of medication - need advice

hi ADHD friends!

here's my predicament: i was diagnosed in childhood almost 10 years ago and have been medicated pretty consistently since then. i have spent enough time off of medications, or trialing medications that didn't work, to know that being medicated is pretty much a necessity for me right now, since i am a full time college student.

this semester i am studying abroad, and i had to switch to an alternative medication because my meds at home were not available here. i had experienced issues in the past with this new med causing intense appetite loss, and have been trying for several months to make it work to the best of my ability, but i have reached a point where my inability to eat anything while medicated has become a more pressing health concern than my ADHD management, and i have made the choice to stop taking my medication in a few days.

because the next two months that i have left in this country will likely be the longest i have spent unmedicated during the school year since i was 10 years old, i need any and all unmedicated tips and hacks you can offer. i know a lot of the standard tips already, but if any of you have dealt with shortages and learned weird, crazy coping mechanisms, i will take them. thank you all in advance!

Medication Is it always this hard to access ADHD treatment in Australia?

I'm new to Australia, and I'm surprised by how difficult it seems to access ADHD medication, even when you already have a diagnosis from your home country.

The process seems to involve so many appointments, costs and restrictions. I'm trying to understand why it's so complicated and whether other people have had similar experiences.

How do international visitors usually navigate the system? Is there a reason it's so difficult to continue treatment here? Any advice?

Seeking Empathy Spent an hour scrambling to find my keys last night

I even enlisted my mom who was visiting to help me find them. I couldn't leave to take my youngest back to her mom until I found them. I've trained myself not to panic in these situations because well, they're all too common. Here's the best part. My mom is ADHD too. She decides to help me look for my keys. She even offers to go check my truck since we can't find them anywhere in the house. Finally I think I should take my baby and go help her look. Walking towards the back door I glance down and that's when I see it: Beautiful keys, dangling down from the door knob.

We had thoroughly gone through EVERY spot I normally leave my things depending on the daily ritual I am working in. And they were in the door. God bless us.

Discussion First Day On Adderall XR

I tried Vyvanse for 2 days and couldn’t bear it! (Is that how you spell “bear” as in bear it? I just don’t get that one. Ya, I think I have Autism too and don’t understand how that word/phrase, “I can’t bear it” uses the word for that animal) anywayyys, LOL, I couldn’t handle the almost immediate crash from 30mg of Vyvanse and got switched to 10mg of Adderall XR.

I am very hopeful that there is no crash instantly like the other one, and I have at least a few hours of some type of ease of my ADHD symptoms. I have been a complete mess where I go to work and instantly am just highly fatigued, drained, my eyes are drooping, I can’t even make eye contact with people, with obviously still having all my ADHD symptoms present.

But it’s been an hour and 53 minutes since I took it, and I also had a great breakfast right before. I don’t really feel anything at all, yet as far as feeling like I can tackle things, and my concentration. Omg my husband just randomly told me to think about copper head road. Are you kidding me? LOOOOL now I’m gonna have that playing in my freaking head all day and maybe even all night to fight. Man, that reminds me of last night, I could not get that song out of my head which wow I can’t even think of the lyrics now thank flipping heavens, I did not sleep until 3 because it wouldn’t go away. Sorry I can’t offer you the lyrics but maybe later I was remember it and get it in your guys’s head. But I found out last night that it’s called something worm. See, ADHD still here because I can’t even think of a word. Anyways…I will update on what I feel on 10mg of Adderall and has anyone else had a similar experience with Vyvanse, and a good experience with Adderall?

Questions/Advice 45, unemployable, big mortgage, severe depression

I’ve had severe depression three times in 6 years after realising I cannot find a job that I can do and that sustains me.

I was a teacher before I burnt out - my serious executive dysfunction meant I could never keep up with the admin, marking, paperwork…

Again I am here feeling like I’m gonna lose my home

My mind is so scattered, adhd means most jobs are beyond me. People think I’m overreacting but it’s the Truth. I’ve lived it.

When I was younger I failed in every single job I had. I make mistakes constantly, cannot read or follow instructions and even simple photocopying I mess up every single time. My mind flits and flits.

The depression is so deep. I don’t know a way out.

Medication First time taking vyvanse

I literally fell asleep after taking it. I thought it was going to help me be able to focus and instead all I could focus on is sleep! Is this normal for people? I’ve barely been diagnosed with ADHD and have particularly really been struggling. I can’t focus on anything or get myself to do anything. It’s like I’m stuck. It’s very overwhelming and I’m starting to feel like maybe I just can’t do anything. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. On tips and tricks or anything.

Questions/Advice How do all the ADHDers view this stereotype?

Hi all my lovely ADHDers,

I came across a few opinions online, saying that ADHD is just a medical excuse for laziness or low agency. Having stimulants could even be worse, because these are all drugs. I have also seen some words labelling people with ADHD taking stimulants as "druggies".

I am currently taking Vyvanse and it transforms my life. But sometimes I do feel guilty or uncomfortable, thinking that I cannot even think or act properly without meds, unlike other normal people.

What do you think?
