META The Biggest Threat to This Community Is Fear

We understand why AI is a sensitive subject for artists right now. It's disrupting the art world in ways that make the future uncertain, and those concerns are real and valid. But something has gone wrong in how our community is responding to that fear, and we need to talk about it.

We don't have an epidemic of AI content in this sub. We have an epidemic of false accusations.

For every piece of AI-generated content we remove, we see around 10 accusations. They're usually directed at:

  • New artists making common beginner mistakes
  • Creative artists who made unique stylistic choices
  • Dedicated artists who put in more work than some people expect a human to be capable of

The art community has become so paranoid that anything that stands out is treated as evidence of cheating. This is not protecting human artists. This is the threat to human artists.

For a new artist sharing their first work, or any artist struggling with anxiety, being dogpiled with accusations causes real trauma that can drive them away from the community. We personally know artists who have stopped posting their work online because of this. If that's the outcome of your "AI policing," you aren't protecting the art community. You're destroying it.

We will always prioritize creating a safe, inclusive space for human artists. If your goal is to punish people for using tools you disapprove of, this is the wrong community for you. If your goal here is to celebrate and support human 3D art, you're in the right place – that's our goal too.

TL;DR

▶ Think something is AI-generated? Report it and move on.
▶ Accusations are considered personal attacks due to the current climate.
▶ AI-generated content will be removed, but AI-assisted work by a human artist is allowed.
▶ Include your wireframe and workflow when you post art.

Read on below for the details.

Where we stand on accusations.

Rule 2 – Be Constructive & Respectful – doesn't have a footnote saying "except for people you suspect of using AI." It means everyone, always, no exceptions. In the current climate, when you publicly accuse someone of using AI, you are painting a target on them. You are calling in the mob. That makes it a personal attack, full stop.

We became mods because we want to protect this community. When we see someone being attacked, our instinct is to protect them – and the more aggressively you come at them, the stronger that instinct becomes.

We understand the community's fears, and sometimes that's meant being more lenient on AI-related harassment than we would be on other kinds. What that patience has taught us is that warnings don't work: People looking to take out their fear on others will keep doing it for as long as they can get away with it. So going forward, AI-related harassment will be handled exactly the same as any other harassment: First offense – warning. Second offense – temporary ban. Third offense – permanent ban.

If you think something might be AI-generated: Report it and move on. That is your entire job. The mods have investigative tools regular users don't, and we take every report seriously. What you should not do is throw accusations in the comments. The odds are roughly 9-to-1 that you're wrong, and either way, publicly attacking a community member is never the right move.

What we're doing about AI.

We personally review most posts, and investigate every report. Blatant AI images get removed on sight, often before the community even sees them, but some cases require more investigation.

We also encourage all art posts to include a wireframe and a brief description of the artist's software and workflow. This deters most AI content, but it’s not just a "prove you're human" gate. The added context helps others learn from your process and it's the kind of healthy engagement that adds real value for everyone. Most artists love talking about their work, so a friendly question about someone's workflow is always welcome.

We're currently looking into the best ways to help wireframes & context become the norm around here. We'll be making some changes to address that soon.

Our policy on AI.

This is covered by the full rules, but they're long and formal, so here it is distilled into simple terms.

AI-generated = Off-topic. If the primary creative contribution came from an AI prompt rather than your own skills as a 3D artist, it does not belong here and will be removed.

AI-assisted = Allowed. AI tools are already embedded in software throughout our industry – Cascadeur's animation tools, Photoshop's generative fill, Rokoko's motion capture – and that's only going to continue. If you're a 3D artist who used AI tools somewhere in your workflow, that's fine. Just make it clear what you contributed with your own skills.

General AI discussion = Off-topic. AI opinions, debates, news, prompting tutorials, etc. will be removed. This is a 3D modeling community, not an AI community.

Art Showcase Feres - Real-time model

Hi, first time posting here! I just wanted to share the model I've recently finished. It's a project I took on as a part of a elective for my CG education during 3rd year of my studies. I wanted to try out and experience every step of game production pipeline for a high fidelity character model. It's my first ever real-time, realistic model (for school projects we were mostly making stylized models for animated movies). I'm quite happy how it came out, but of course there's always room for improvements with next project :)

There's more info and breakdown images in the artstation post for this project: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/P44Kg8

Art Showcase Mage 3d model: "Eyla" – Designed! Would love your feedback!

Hey everyone,
Wanted to share the sculpt I’ve been working on: Eyla the Earth Mage.
My primary goal with this piece was to design a figure tailored specifically around the painting workflow rather than just visual aesthetics:

I placed angled facets on the staff's crystal orb and deep recesses around the hanging lantern to make Object Source Lighting easier to trace and blend. Also, I struggled in creating distinct contrast between smooth skin areas, heavy braided hair, worn cloth, embossed leather, and the weathered bark of the log.

Cut and keyed into separate sub-assemblies (base, trunk, figure, hat, staff) to ensure no awkward tight angles while reaching with a brush. Also, model is cut following natural line in order to hide assembly marks

Scale is 1/12 (140mm).
I'm currently running physical test prints to double-check key tolerances and support placement.

I'd really appreciate any C&C on the anatomy (😏), drapery folds, or overall readability before locking in the final supports!

Made this really cool Applehouse from the concept I found on pinterest from Mariko-chan94, it took me a really long time to complete it, it started with modeling the base in blender, the roof took the longest time, then a bit of high poly in zbrush, the bake the high poly in substance painter and then painting in substance, which was the most fun part.

Questions & Discussion How do you make clothes thicker in the best way?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hi, this is my first time working on a clothing mesh more advanced, and I wanted to make it a little more realistic by adding thickness to the fly, the pockets, etc. What’s a good workflow from Marvelous to ZBrush to achieve a decent thickness? I was thinking of simply adding edgeloop (I like how it shapes the seams when subdividing, since it separates the mesh into individual polygroup islands), but as you can see, all the parts are separated at subdividing, and then I was planning to just merge the entire mesh in my retopology, but I have no idea if I’ll run into problems during the bake since my high-poly is split into several parts.

Free Assets & Tools Finally, a Free Alternative to Shapr3D for iPad, Android, Windows & Mac!

Finally, I found an alternative to the expensive Shapr3D!
I’ve tested SolidCraft on both Windows and Mac, and now I’ve tried it on iPad and Android as well. It works as a web app, and there’s a free version available.
Surprisingly, it’s quite fast and actually not bad at all. I really liked it! Definitely worth checking out if you’re looking for a Shapr3D alternative without the expensive subscription.
Here’s the link: https://solidcraft.io/app

Art Showcase Keyboard scene with illustrated keycaps | Blender / Cycles

Thumbnail

A keyboard scene we put together in Blender, rendered in Cycles. The last image is a clay pass from the same scene.

The Attack Shark X85 keyboard model is from BlenderKit. Our work here was the keycap treatment, materials, lighting, scene composition and animation. We used original artwork from SuperWEIRD, the game I work on, for the keycaps, map tiles and pig keychain.

The scene mixes an ordinary keyboard shape with flat illustrated elements. In the animation, the camera moves into the Corruption spreading across the neighbouring keys, then returns to the wide shot. We spent a lot of the revisions adjusting the floating tiles so they would clear the board, backdrop and keychain throughout the camera move.

The keyboard is a visual concept rendered in 3D.

Free Tutorials Painting stylised textures using toolbag with some handy info regardless of program

Spent a good while writing up this article for Marmoset Toolbag and it goes over some of my knowledge that I am had gouged into me after 22 years of trying to grapple texturing. I hope this is somewhat helpful and if you think there is stuff missing, let me know.

While I am a paid team member of Marmoset, I genuinely enjoy texturing in it ( when I was a senior env artist on Solium Internum, all the environment assets were textured inside toolbag 4)
I do want to see it get better at stylised painting. Though there are some amazing programs like 3D coat, blender and substance that also tackle stylised painting well, and hopefully the article can give you tools that you can transfer over to those programs too.

I just wanted to thank everyone for the support on my last post of this style I've been working on for the last couple of years.

It motivated me to keep going since I'm a huge procrastinator.

I Wanted to show more in this post, since a lot were asking if the shading actually moves or not.

You will also notice the line work changing size from zooming in and out.

I basically want to recreate the classic DBZ look exactly but make it work in a game.

The filter is too strong but it's just so you notice it.

For the people asking how I did it. I'm writing a blog post on the full journey which is very long so it'll take sometime. But, will share it here when done.

Note: This was filmed in Unity. but it works exactly the same in Blender.

It still needs textures and a proper rig with animations, but I wanted to share the model and hear your thoughts.

What do you think of the overall shape and anatomy? Is there anything you'd improve?

I'm open to constructive criticism!
