After seeing a new "Help, I lost my ball python in the car" post pretty much every day for the past month when I log on, I think it's time for a little reminder
STOP TAKING YOUR BALL PYTHONS IN THE CAR UNNECESSARILY.
They don't want to go get coffee. They don't want to go get pizza. Or go to work with you. Or drop the kids off at school. Or go look at the other ball pythons at petsmart. These are not enjoyable or beneficial experiences for them, and each and every time you do this, you're causing an unnecessary risk.
Cars are full of dark, hard to reach and cozy crevices for them to slip into, places they would much rather be hiding in then sitting on your lap or in a bin. It only takes seconds for them to slip out of sight and out of reach, and being able to find them is not a given. Certainly nobody plans on losing their snake in the car, but the amount of times it somehow keeps happening should demonstrate why it's a terrible idea.
Part of being a good pet owner is being aware of the species you have and their habits and preferences so as not to put them in risky situations for your own enjoyment. A dog may enjoy going for a quick ride, not so much for a ball python who would rather be in their warm and cozy hide.
In the event you need to take your snake somewhere (such as moving or the vet), put it in a tied pillowcase in a locking bin (two layers of containment).

Have a cute photo you want to show off? Post it below! We'd love to see everyone's royal friends!
Please remember to keep the thread on topic and only post your ball pythons. Photos of other species/animals will be removed. We also ask that you refrain from spamming the thread - a couple of photos is fine, a couple dozen is not.

Caught my guy doing the most picturesque periscope and thought I’d share. He is making lots of progress and is much more confident now vs when I got him!

Back when I first got him two years ago, he was so tiny back then and now he’s pushing 800 grams!

Does anybody else have this problem? We recently upgraded to this enclosure now that our girl is getting bigger and is an experienced escape artist.. she got out of the tiniest crack on the last one by using her strength to push out the plexiglass front so it would flex. I have better hopes she won’t be able to escape this one, but this morning after not being able to find her, this is where she was! It was a pain to get her out and she was all tangled in the cords. I’m going to put some electrical tape in to secure the wires later today, but would like to keep her away from that part of it all together. Also planning to add something for her to get up closer to the heat source because I believe that’s what she was attempting here, and she LOVES to climb. 🙃

Back from Greece, so the tank got finished up, and has been his new home for 3 weeks now. He is loving it. My mom also came over to meet him, and absolutely loves him

Hi i have a 2yr old (? rescue so) ball python around 895grams right now
Since i’ve had him (10 months) i have been feeding him a small frozen thawed rat every other week
According to many feeding guides, like this sub and others, i should be feeding him the same prey size (40-60g rat) every 20 days now? (like 7% of his body weight or something)
i’m unfortunately, very stupid, is this correct?
i haven’t fed him since the 14th of october, it is the 27th now (so typically, i would feed him tomorrow)
+ i was away a day after i was meant to feed him so i skipped because i wanted to be there as he was digesting just in case
so his feeding schedule, unfortunately, has been disturbed, he’s been showing signs of being hungry, and seems antsy for the past few days (extra active, glass surfing)
he has a great feeding response and is clearly upset at this change (also i know he would eat himself to death if he could lol just mentioning)
so please let me know if i’m doing the correct thing and if not, what i need to be doing
thank you!

Just hit the 4 month mark and wondering if shes on target with her weight (193grams). She is eating, pooping and shedding great! And loves being out.

So I was feeding my snake like usual by thawing a rat overnight in the fridge then using a hair dryer to heat it for like 5 minutes. I didn’t see anything after he struck, so I left him alone as usual. I just went back after a few hrs to check on him, and I saw the rat laying outside with its guts out 💀 I cant clean it rn bc when I approached the enclosure, my snake immediately got into feeding mode/he got into an S position. I don’t want to get mistaken for a rat 😭
My question is do I feed him another rat tomorrow night (earliest it can thaw) or try again a few days later?

Saw these in my girl’s water bowl just now. Her tummy is a little pink but I brushed it off as just shedding because her eyes are blue gray, but now I’m not so sure?

I just got my first ball python today named Göth and have already set up his home with everything a boop Noodle could ask for. But I have never really had one so do need to leave him in his house to get used to it for a couple days or can I take him out tomorrow? He does not eat for again till Monday if that matters

im currently in the process of changing his feeding schedule as i was previously feeding him one rat hopper per week which i am now aware is too frequent (please don't tell me that because I do already know) so I'm changing him to a small rat every 10-14 days
I'm driving myself insane trying to tell if he's overweight or not, he's currently 16 months, probably about 3ft and 709g. he's also very active through handling and exploring his tank at night
just need to know if I should do every 10 day or every 14 day feedings to manage his weight!!

Snake shed a few days ago, and now has a red rash. Is this normal? She’s eating, moving, handling well.

Please tell me this isnt what I think it is.... I just got him saturday at an expo. The guy I bought him from said he doesnt have the spider or champagne gene... he had the perfect temperament before this. He was gentle and curious, he was exploring. Now hes a bit lethargic and wonky. He started doing this last night. My temps and humidity are correct and there was no exposure to any chemicals....

Hi everyone!
I just got my first ball python! He’s 3 months old, and I want to make sure I’m doing everything right.
He’s currently in a 120 × 60 × 60 cm (4 × 2 × 2 ft) wooden terrarium with 4 hides: one on the warm side, one on the cool side, and two in the middle.
For heating, I’m currently only using a heating pad connected to a thermostat. I’ve placed approximately 1 cm (0.4 inches) of plywood between the heating pad and the snake to prevent direct contact and burns.
Here are my current temperatures:
Warm side (inside the hide): Around 31°C (88°F)
Warm side (outside the hide): 28–29°C (82–84°F)
Cool side: Around 23–24°C (73–75°F)
I haven’t installed any other heat source yet, so the heating pad is currently the only thing keeping the enclosure warm.
My questions are:
Are these temperatures okay for a 3-month-old ball python?
Is using only a heating pad sufficient for a terrarium this size?
Is the plywood barrier enough to prevent burns?
Would you recommend adding an overhead heat source, like a ceramic heat emitter or a halogen lamp?
I really want to give him the best possible environment, so any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
