lookingfor Dark at 5 pm again – what's your favourite cosy weeknight plan in Zurich?

My kids and I bought reflective jackets so we can keep going outside even when it's dark. But since the clocks went back, the evenings feel over before they've even started. So I'm collecting ideas: what do you do on a dark Tuesday or Wednesday in Zurich that isn't just the sofa? Cafés, a sauna (not with the kids obviously), a weekly class, a cosy Znacht spot, anything goes.

rant Cyclists, fix your lights

I am tired of getting my eyeballs burned out by the power of a thousand suns every evening I walk my dog.

Those things can pivot, you know? You don’t need to see all the way to the top of Zermatt.

ihaveaquestion EU citizen applying for a B permit in Zurich with variable working hours.

Hi everyone!

My gf started working in housekeeping at a hotel through a cleaning company. Her employment contract is permanent (unbefristet), but there's a catch.

The contract only guarantees 4 hours per week, while allowing her to work up to approximately 40 hours depending on demand. In reality, she's currently working around 20 hours per week on average, although her schedule is quite unpredictable.

The company told her she should be eligible for a B residence permit, but we're a bit concerned about the working hours.

Here's the situation:

  • She has a permanent employment contract.
  • Her original contract guarantees only 4 hours per week.
  • After requesting additional documentation, her employer issued a signed employment confirmation (Arbeitsbestätigung) stating that her contractually agreed minimum average working time is 15 hours per week.
  • This confirmation was issued after she had already submitted her residence permit application, so the authorities initially received only the original contract.
  • She already has an appointment at the Zurich Migration Office for her photo and signature, but we don't know whether she'll receive a B or L permit. We initially heard that an L permit is tied to the employer and that changing jobs could cause her to lose it, but I've since read that EU citizens can generally change employers even with an L permit.

From what I've read, canton Zurich generally requires more than 15 working hours per week for an EU citizen to qualify for a B permit based on employment.

So I have a few questions:

  1. Has anyone received a B permit in Zurich with a permanent contract but variable working hours, especially around 15–20 hours per week?
  2. Would the signed employment confirmation stating a minimum of 15 hours be helpful, even though the original contract guarantees only 4 hours? Has anyone dealt with conflicting documents like this?
  3. Would submitting payslips, timesheets or work schedules showing approximately 20 hours per week improve her chances?
  4. Does having an appointment for the photo and signature mean that the residence permit has already been approved, or is that just part of the standard application process?
  5. If she receives an L permit instead of a B permit, can she freely change employers as an EU citizen? For example, if she finds a permanent 80–100% position, could she then apply for a B permit?

We're also actively looking for a more stable job because the current company offers very unpredictable working hours, which makes it very difficult to earn a reliable monthly income.

We're not looking for ways around the rules. We just want to understand how the Zurich authorities actually handle situations like this and what documentation would be most useful.

I'd especially appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone through something similar recently.

Thanks a lot for your help!

lookingfor Looking for a regular 5v5/7v7 soccer group

Hi all :)

I recently moved to Zürich and I am looking for a group that plays soccer regularly. I am not after 11v11 so small-sided games like 5v5 or 7v7 are ideal.

The more competitive the better :D

I am quite flexible on the days and times so if you run a group or know of one please let me know

Thanks!

meetup We are planning an expecting and new moms meetup in Zurich, would you like to join?

I hope you are doing well 🍂

We are building a small community of expecting and new moms in Basel (though not limited to Basel, as that’s simply where we live). We had our first in-person meetup a month ago, and it was a really nice event.

One of our members from Zurich has volunteered to organize an in-person meetup in Zurich. It’s a free, no-pressure get-together where you can meet other moms in the area, share ideas, ask questions, and get peer support from others who may have faced similar questions on their own journey. Of course, there will also be a nice coffee or tea, and maybe some cake ☕ 🍰

Whether you are still planning your pregnancy, at any stage of the journey, or post-delivery, you are very welcome to join.

If you’d like to come, just send me a message so I can send you updates when it's fixed and also we know there is enough members. You are also welcome to bring your kids/toddlers and your partners.

We are still planning the date, probably in November or December. I will keep you posted :) 🤗

lookingfor Stolen bags at ASVZ Hönggerberg

Tonight (Tuesday, 27 Oct) two of my bags were stolen from the locker room at the ASVZ Sport Center Hönggerberg, sometime between 19:10 and 20:20:

- Grey backpack
- Grey-green sports bag

There were some valuables inside, but what I'm really hoping to get back are the personal and sentimental items: my keys, IDs, clothes, and a crochet project I'd been working on. None of these are worth anything to anyone else.

My guess is that whoever took them will keep the valuables and dump the bags somewhere, maybe around Hönggerberg or elsewhere in the city. If you come across either bag or any of these items (in a bin, bush, tram stop, anywhere), please send me a DM. I'd be really grateful, and I'm happy to come pick them up.

Thanks for reading, and please keep an eye on your stuff!

ihaveaquestion Ordinary naturalisation in Stadt Zürich – my timeline so far (October 2026)

Hi everyone!

I wanted to share my experience with the ordinary naturalisation process in Stadt Zürich so far, as I know how helpful it can be to compare timelines with others going through the same process.

After waiting for more than four months at the cantonal stage, I finally received an update that my application has moved to Prüfung Bund! 🎉

Here's my timeline:

  • 30.06.2025 – Application submitted
  • 17.10.2025 – Status changed to Vorprüfung
  • 03.02.2026 – Status changed to Prüfung Gemeinde
  • April 2026 – Passed the Grundkenntnistest
  • May 2026 – Received the positive decision from Stadt Zürich (Gemeindebürgerrecht)
  • 19.06.2026 – Status changed to Prüfung Kanton
  • 23.10.2026 – Status changed to Prüfung Bund 🎉

The cantonal stage took slightly longer than the four months indicated on the canton's website.

I'm now particularly interested in what happens next.

For those who have recently gone through ordinary naturalisation in Stadt Zürich or elsewhere in Kanton Zürich:

  1. How many days/weeks after reaching Prüfung Bund did you receive letter or invoice?
  2. How long did it take from Prüfung Bund to Schlussprüfung?
  3. How long after Schlussprüfung did you officially become a Swiss citizen?

If you're comfortable sharing your timeline with exact dates (and your municipality), that would be incredibly helpful!

Hopefully, this post will help others who are currently going through the same process.

Thanks in advance, and good luck to everyone still waiting!

lookingfor female psychiatrist in Zurich

hello,

I’d like to change my current psychiatrist since he’s not very present and made some comments I found weird.

I tried to look on onedoc but there are only a few psychiatrists accepting new patients, or as least it seems so.

does anyone here have tips? I’d prefer a female since I’m F too.

thank you so much

ihaveaquestion buying concert tickets outside venues

Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone has experience buying last minute concert tickets from resellers that very often happens to be outside the venue on the day of the concert. What was your experience? I'd like to go see Simple Plan on Thursday but it's sold out everywhere and wouldn't mind trying my luck at the venue.

ihaveaquestion Where do all the alternative people hang out?

Hiya, I'm moving to Zurich temporarily in the near future and have heard quite a few times that Zurich can be a bit too... polished? I'm Swiss myself and haven't really felt this, but I also haven't lived there long enough. To be honest, I'm a bit worried I'll get a bit bored living there haha.

Super curious, but like where do all the alternative people hang out? The more underground creative nerd types? Can refer to the techie scene, art scene, music scene, etc.. as long as it's sort of alt. Thanks!

rant Enough with the electric moped delivery drivers

Anyone else completely done with the food delivery drivers in Zurich treating bike lanes and sidewalks like their personal racetrack?

Every single day I see these electric mopeds flying down the pedestrian and bike paths at full speed, no slowing down, no looking, just blasting past pedestrians and cyclists like we don't exist. Nearly got taken out twice last week alone. They're not even trying to use the road and there is no sound from these machines so it is extremely dangerous.

I get that they're under time pressure, but that doesn't give them the right to turn every path into a death trap. It's aggressive, reckless, and somehow always gets a free pass.

lookingfor clubs that dont require physical ID in Zurich

Hi guys, I (F18) am visiting my friend in Zurich this weekend for Halloween. I forgot my physical ID at home, and of course, I only have a picture on my phone. I know Zurich is pretty strict with IDs, but does anyone know any clubs or bars that aren’t? I’d also be the only one in my friend group without a physical ID card. Any recommendations or suggestions? I'm also open to Halloween events, DJ sets, or any type of music/dance scene event. Thanks!

Merci vielmal!

lookingfor Zurich guys, where are you?

I’m 26, live in Zurich and somehow realised that while I know quite a few people, I’ve never really had that small, close-knit group of guy friends that regularly hangs out and actually stays in touch.
I’m basically looking for a group of guys who have their own lives, jobs, relationships and responsibilities, but still make time for each other. The kind of friendships where you can plan something for the weekend, randomly text “beer tonight?” or “anyone up for doing something?” and actually make it happen.
Nothing complicated — grabbing a beer, going out, watching football, gaming, travelling somewhere for the weekend, trying a new restaurant, hitting the gym, going to an event or just hanging out and talking shit for a few hours.
I’d especially like to meet people who are open-minded, easy-going and actually interested in building new friendships rather than just meeting once and never speaking again.
If you’re roughly 23–32, live in Zurich or nearby and feel like your social circle could use a few new people too, feel free to reach out.
Maybe we can start with a beer, coffee or something casual and see who gets along. 🍻
A bit about me:
I’m 26, work in tech/retail and live around Zurich. I’m into technology, travelling, gaming, history, going out for drinks, trying new restaurants and occasionally doing spontaneous trips or activities. I can be pretty social, but I also enjoy just having a relaxed evening with good conversations.
Would be cool if this somehow turned into a proper group of guys who regularly do things together instead of everyone saying “we should definitely do something sometime” and then disappearing for six months. 😄
