I installed Linux Mint Xfce. This laptop was running Windows 10 which was eating the resources of this laptop. The specs are pretty bad [1] but it was still usable up until recently where everything took forever and browsing the internet was not comfortable.
Linux made it usable again and the resource usage drop substantially.
This was my second time installing linux. I'm still a beginner so any tips would be appreciated and let me know your thoughts on this
If anyone is browsing reddit considering installing Linux on an old machine, do it. it really makes a difference compared windows.

CPU: Intel Celereon N3350 2.4ghz
GPU: Intel Hd Graphics 500 0.65ghz Integrated
Memory: 3.66GB

Prototype: scheduled theme switching in Appearance settings (Xfce 4.20)
Hi all,
I've built a prototype that adds a Schedule tab to xfce4-appearance-settings. You can define any number of rules of the form "at HH:MM, switch the style to ...". This is useful for an automatic dark mode in the evening and back to light in the morning.
Each rule can do any of these, together or separately:
The rules are stored in xfconf (xsettings:/Xfce/ThemeSchedule/).
xfsettingsd applies them, so they work without the dialog being open. A rule fires when the clock passes its time, so a manual change stays until the next rule. A switch missed while you were logged out is applied at login.
The code is a set of patches against xfce4-settings 4.20.1 (tested on Xubuntu 26.04), and GitHub Actions builds .debpackages from them:
https://github.com/gtubolcev/xfce-patches
There is also a PPA with .debs for Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gtubolcev/xfce-patches
Sunrise/sunset-based rules are planned next, maybe redshift-based. I'd welcome feedback on the UI and the approach.
A note on why this is not a merge request for xfce main project: I'm not a programmer, and the code was written with Claude (an AI assistant). I can test that it works on my machine, but I can't properly review the code myself, so I don't feel right submitting it upstream as-is. If a developer finds the idea useful and wants to review it or take it over, please feel free.

First attempt at ricing, it was fun even for a non-technical person like myself ;) Linux mint xfce is the best option for an old MBP circa 2018 that was lying around my house. Keyboard backlights and other shortcut keys still work well.

I am trying to make my whiskermenu appear to be floating next to my panel with space between it and the panel but I just don't know how to make it work or what css code does this
I have seen an mac os tahoe theme that did this but I don't remember where to find it to see how they did it
any help or links would be appreciated :]
Just installed Tumbleweed which has latest KDE Plasma, that has gone Wayland. Totally sucks, as soon as you move mouse, screen goes blank. So had to do ctrl alt F3 to get text terminal and install XFCE desktop.
