Weight at 1 Year? Guess!

Our boi is 7.5 months old and weighed in at a hefty 18.4 lbs! Personally, I have no clue how he weighs that much because when he gets wet he looks like tiny.

How much does the Westie community think he will weigh at 1 year? I’m hoping under 22 lbs so he can fly in cabin for family visits.

Recent photos attached! (He just got neutered)

My best friend

Today, my best friend of 13.5 years crossed the rainbow bridge. I grew up with Westies and he was the first one of my own. To say he was MY dog is an understatement. He was truly the best dog I could’ve asked for and my heart is broken. He had been diagnosed with diabetes nearly 2 years ago and also subsequently went blind. We managed it well for as long as we could. I can’t believe how quickly time passes. He actually had a good day today which nearly gutted me but I’m glad he was able to enjoy it. The sun is shining, the temperature perfect. He ate lots of McDonald’s for lunch and got to eat loads of treats. I love you Gus.

Tomorrow is the day where we remember our beloved pets who have sadly crossed the rainbow bridge 🤍🕊️❣️
Not a day goes by where I don’t miss these two, we grew up together and they were like my siblings.

Buster and Lulu, I miss you both so much and you’ll always hold a special place in my heart 💓

Westie Skin Issues - need your advice

Hi all. Like many, our little westie has developed skin issues since April. Not long before he turned two. He’s always been a dog that has enjoyed licking everything. His toys. His bed. His feet. It was never an issue until April, really. The reason I say this is because I think there’s a behavioural / self soothing issue that adds to the below.

It started off where I noticed he’d pulled fur off his back foot. Then he started licking his front two feet profusely, to the point of irritation and even aggression - poor guy. Then he had a bunch of ear infections. The vets have indicated that paw infections were leading to ear infections and vice versa. A terrible vicious cycle.

Then he started getting crusty bits all over his skin. I saw a post in here from very recently which is exactly what he had. The antibiotics fixed it.

In this time; I’ve been to regular vets and a dermatologist vet.

He tried cytopoint. It didn’t seem to work. Apoquel seems to work but like I’ve seen mentioned on here, not ideal for long term use.

He was on this analergenic kibble in a food elimination diet. By week 6, when he rolled off the apoquel - because theoretically the old food should’ve been well and truly flushed, but alas, he started licking his feet straight after.

At this point it feels like he’s had every antibiotic, anti itch, medicated shampoo under the sun. It just feels like battle after battle. I haven’t even bothered adding up how much this has all cost.

We’re booked in for allergy testing now that food is ruled out being the issue given how the test went. The idea being he’ll have the injections or drops based on what he’s allergic to.

Has anyone been through this? Just feel awful for the dog. He’s happy enough. He just hates being at the vet at this stage. Having his feet taped. Having his ears looked in (if he even lets them now). While the double whammy of yeast PLUS bacteria buildups in his feet have stopped, he’s still being held together by apoquel.

I guess I am looking for light at the end of the tunnel. Thanks all

Sincerely, a crestfallen and worried westie owner.

Looking for advice on my westies skin issues.

He's just turned 7 years old and did have very bad skin in his younger years. We since moved him onto a lamb or sometimes fish with kibble diet and his skin kept ok for a while.

He has recently developed these spots which seems to be kinda gunky black stuff coming off his fur. My mum has a suspicion that my sisters skin problems have affected him but im not sure.

Hopefully the video helps out.

Bruce is an 11-year-old Westie who was surrendered to Westie Rescue Southeast by his previous owner. After months of giving warning signs that he didn’t appreciate young kiddos in his space, Bruce ended up biting their toddler. He is being fostered in Raleigh, NC and is still looking for his forever.

Bruce was incredibly bonded to his previous owner (a man) and really needs a man in the house, as this helps him feel even more relaxed, at ease, and happy. He really misses another man to bond with.

During his 3 months in a foster home, we’ve gotten to know Bruce pretty well. Bruce does not like having his feet touched or being handled without his consent. It’s pretty easy, actually…all you need to do is ask him if he wants to be touched!

If you extend your hand to Bruce, he’ll lick your hand, rub his head against you, or wag his tail in excitement to show you he’s ready for affection! And if not, he’ll simply look away as if he’s saying, “not right now.” Bruce just needs a partner who will love him as he is, give him respect, and follow his lead.

Bruce will make a wonderful companion for someone who wants a chill dog who will follow you from room to room. He may not be a touchy feely dog who wants to wrestle, be picked up, or be constantly touched, but Bruce wants to be included! He’s content to sit next to you on the couch or lie down at your feet. And he really does love to be pet when you ask him, first!!

Bruce is also house trained and crate trained and walks great on a leash. He loves nothing more than to take a leisurely walk outside!

This sweet senior boy is looking for his forever home where he can spend his golden years - if you think you’d be a good fit for Bruce, please submit an adoption application through Westie Rescue Southeast’s website to be considered: https://westierescuesoutheast.org/adopt-or-volunteer

Please note the following requirements to adopt Bruce:

  • Fully fenced yard
  • No children or grandchildren that live in the home or regularly visit (only 15+)
  • No other pets (Bruce is used to being the only dog/pet in the house and likes it that way!)
  • Bruce also requires a man in the house ☺️
  • Must be within a reasonable driving distance from Raleigh, NC (4-5 hours max)

You can watch this YouTube video that Bruce's foster mom put together about him for some more information on him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGGJTPr9Orc&t=4s

Even if you're not the right home for Bruce, sharing his story means more people can learn about him and we can find him his happily ever after, which he so deserves. ❤️ 🐾

How can I comfort my westie while my brother is in hospital?

My brother is in hospital for a few days, so I'm looking after our 13-year-old westie Archie. Archie has never been without my brother. My brother always takes care of him and he usually spends most of the day in the living room with my brother.

Since my brother's in hospital, I've been feeding him, taking him out, changing his water etc. I've also been letting him in my room to stay on my bed next to me. He never usually comes into my room but since my brother's in hospital he's come into my room every day and spends all day lying on my bed next to me, usually sleeping.

But he seems upset that my brother is gone and I'm not sure how I can make him feel better. He walks around whining, and he'll look at me and whine, even when he's been fed and let out and has fresh water. He never usually whines this much and I'm pretty sure it's because he's missing my brother.

What can I do to make him feel better?

Otter has somehow locked himself in door jail

I have no idea how he did it, but our Westie puppy got himself stuck behind our back door and ended up like this.

There’s a magnet that holds the door open and a bell that dangles down from the door knob. He was ringing the bell for a solid 2 minutes. My wife asked me to check what he was doing (I assumed he was just biting it like usual), and I came up to see him in door jail.

(I freed him from jail btw. He is fine.)

That makes his list: squirrels, birds, rabbits, mice, rats, and 1 possum. Quite the little hunter!
