Deep Dive into Werewolf History and Philosophy
I got extremely interested in werewolves recently (helped along by this sub--thanks!!) and we ended up doing a four-part special on my podcast The Midnight Seminar, in honor of Halloween and all things werewolfy.
Link to first epside: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/wolfmen-and-magic-and-myths-oh-my-werewolves-part-1/id1853320698?i=1000793694481
Part 1 focuses on ancient shape-shifting myths and wolfman lore.
Part 2 was mostly about the medieval trials, and also the historical relationship between humans and real wolves.
Part 3 walked through the birth of modern werewolf folklore and the rise of the pop culture werewolf.
and Part 4, out today, is about the assorted topics that were still on our minds: the teenage werewolf, good vs. evil, plaid shirts, etc.
I know y'all are experts and have lots of great thoughts and opinions--I spent a lot of my time in the historical sources and caught up on the pop culture as best I could, as I'm a professional historian and my co-host is a philosopher (both PhDs). Hope you enjoy it if you check it out, and Happy Halloween!

How would humanity exploit Werewolves if they would be real?
1st obvious choice, the military, security companies would try to exploit them. even if they are out of control monsters they could find an use for it.
Biosciences would try to look into the regeneration ability trying to replicate it without the downsides.
If Werewolves maintain their control while wolfed out they would probably employed as bomb or drugsniffers.
Any other ways of exploitation?

Inspiration - thank you
I have a short story I've been working on for months. I've decided to add werewolves to it, at least at a macro socioeconomic level. I want to explore how the werewolves will interact with the three classes of demons and my resilient group of protagonists.

I have a question regarding The Wolfman,(2010). In the middle of Lawrence Talbot's first transformation into the Wolfman, why does he stare directly into a candle's fire?
Can anyone help me understand this, please? Here's what I mean. https://youtu.be/Jg9FFru3My8?is=Zhkdg4aHd5TtwrZf

What if werewolves had to earn their claws?
So like, neat little writing idea: What if werewolves earned their claws?
Imagine that when one initially turns, their only a fledgling. They have dull nails and teeth, practically a dog really (sorta like "Alvin and the chipmunks meets the wolfman"). But when they do some kind of blood related ritual, they grow sharp.
Ideas for blood rituals include:
- Killing a lamb (or some allegorical proxy)
- Hunting on a blood moon (perhaps it's a ceremony that happens every few years)
- Devouring a human heart (evil but also pretty metal)
- Biting another person and turning them (cycle continues)
It sort of makes all the cool powers of being a werewolf something you need to earn, and it could create an interesting divide between lycans. Perhaps fully formed werewolves make fun of fledglings as being too "soft" while wolves without claws find those with barbaric. Another angle could be someone resisting the urge to fulfill the ritual in an attempt to maintain some semblance of humanity.
Idk, thoughts? ¯_(ツ)_/¯
