Club Should I train with an elite gym with less personalized guide, or a neighborhood gym with much more personalized guide?

Basically title. I am a hobbist weightlifter who had lifted for 1-2 years. I am now choosing between joining an elite gym or joining a small neighborhood gym. The elite gym has star weightlifters and coaches, but I do not get a personalized program, and I suspect I will get less attention from the coach since I am just a hobbist and I lift much less than the peer elite lifters training at the same gym. On the other hand, the coach at the neighborhood gym gives a lot of personal attention to his athletes and writes a personalized program. My only worry is that he never really had a career of weightlifting, and he is not that much of an "competitive" elite weightlifter himself. I don't want to give away any details about myself or about these gyms. Any advice? Thanks in advance!

Club OLY GYM in Phoenix METRO

I have been going around checking out all the barbell clubs in my area in PHX metro and I recently visited a gym called atlas barbell club in glendale and its very good but new. The equipment is good, the coach is probably the best I have ever met, and the people are funny and motivating. Might be hard to beat. I was wondering if you guys had any other recommendations to try out?
I have been to most on the USAW website. But if you have one that is underground so to speak I would love to hear it.

Can anyone suggest a weightlifting club to train for a week while visiting?

CrossFit gyms work too, I reckon more easily found than WL clubs.

Club Weightlifting drop-in in Poznań?

Hi everyone,

I’ll be in Poznań for the weekend and I’m looking for somewhere I can drop in once or twice to get my training done.

Does anyone know of any CrossFit boxes that allow open gym drop-ins or any gyms in Poznań with a proper weightlifting setup?

I’ll be following my own programming, so I don’t need a class or coaching, just somewhere to train.

Any recommendations would be massively appreciated. Thank you! 🙌

Club How far away is your gym?

Looking for a weightlifting specific gym, but with my schedule I don’t think I can drive 25 minutes there and back every morning, while having time to warmup and get a good lift in.

My current gym is a powerlifting gym, with some weightlifting platforms that I’ve seen about 10 other weightlifters use in the past year. I feel like I’d benefit from being around more weightlifters, to improve, potentially compete, and just for overall enjoyment.

Currently in Philly metro area.

I assume this relatively common, what has been your experience with this? Is there anything I’m missing here?

Club Master CoronaVirus HomeGym thread.

Since Coronavirus has made many Weightlifters gymless and forced to train in their homes with non WL equipment or equipment of their own (or borrowed by their gyms), here's a thread that will be stickied until everything settles (it will be unstickied for AMA's and Havelrag's WL PT of the week in the future).

I’m 26M who lives in Brooklyn and has experience lifting weights but no experience with OLY. Currently I want to get into Olympic Weightlifting but I have no idea where to start. Does anyone knows a coach or a gym that offer classes for complete beginners? Preferably in Brooklyn but I’m willing to travel to manhattan and other areas. Any help is very much appreciated.

Club Any places to train near Hoffman Estates, Illinois?

Hi all,

I'm gonna be visiting family in Illinois in a few weeks, and the place I'd normally train at out there has closed. Does anyone know any weightlifting friendly gyms in the Hoffman Estates area? Even in Schaumburg or Palatine is fine. Thanks!

Club Training - New York City/Brooklyn or Los Angeles?

Hi all,

I've done a fair bit of research regarding which cities I can relocate to in the future - with the most important factor being the job that I can get (and the second most important factor being weightlifting) - and the locations on my list are:

  1. New York City/Brooklyn/Astoria (Queens)

  2. Los Angeles, California.

I am currently based in Northern California, and based on the research I have done, the only feasible training location I like is Murder of Crows based in Brooklyn, while there seems to be a number of locations in Los Angeles (specifically, in LA County, not Orange County).

Living near MOC (somewhere along Crown Heights) and commuting into the city (obviously FiDI > Midtown if commuting from Brooklyn) doesn't seem to be too bad of a commute in terms of time and logistics. I also have access to a vehicle which I could bring into NY if needed.

For those who train in NYC with a full-time job, while also training Olympic weightlifting, is it logistically a nightmare?

  • In terms of grocery shopping, carrying those groceries back home, loud noises during sleep, expensive groceries, finding affordable/high-protein meals on a whim when home-cooking isn't going to happen today, etc...

Of course, NYC is the job capital for my target industry (finance) so I would want to position there if no impediment to my training. But being realistic, the city is optimized for go-go-go mentality, so not sure if Olympic weightlifting training would mesh well there. I understand that there are crossfit gyms all over the city, but I would rather train in a proper WL facility/club as opposed to a crossfit gym in a crossfit community.

Open to reading any perspectives of those who currently work and train in NYC, or those who have trained in both NYC and LA/Southern California!

Thank you.

Club Super slow for in-person coaching today. So, I’m a weightlifting coach trying to start a local and remote club in Birmingham, AL. AMA

I’m mostly just kinda bored. Programming and video analyses are done for the day, so let’s talk

A little about me: I've coached 6 lifters to national qualifying totals in 3 4 dfferent age groups (u10, u13, Junior, Senior).

My coaching lineage comes down from Tommy Kono. My first coach was Kris Kimura out of Whittier, CA.

When I moved out to AL, I didn't get to do much coaching as Covid hit about a year after moving here. Now, I'm trying to start my own team
