Mainline kernel updates

Hello all -- I was just wondering, I can see kernel 7.3 is available in the repos, but linux-mainline is still using 7.2_1 (at least on my machine when I update/query).

Obviously not a request or anything, just pure curiosity as to how linux-mainline is linked to kernel updates.

I will also take this opportunity to wholeheartedly thank the Void team for their incredible dedication to this amazing project. This distribution is a true rare gem and for what it is worth, your work is immensely appreciated!

solved PSA: running mango? version 18 needs a config edit

If you are running mangowc be advised that voidlinux just upgraded to version 18, and you will need to upgrade your config file for some breaking changes. There's a script you can run at https://github.com/mangowm/mango/releases/tag/0.18.0 to do the work.

Need assistance: Bluetooth is NOT working AT ALL (rtw88_8821ce)

Edit: it seems like Realtek just sucks ans i'll have to spend money ona new adapter as some of yoy suggested. But thanks for the help :(

Good afternoon guys, hope you're doing well

The reason i am posting is because i am so pissed already with my Bluetooth which in this case is a Realtek Semiconductor Corp. Bluetooth Radio (from lsusb | grep Bluetooth), specifically, the rtw88_8821ce (version 24.11.0, H2C version 12 from sudo dmesg | grep rtw88_8821ce).

So basically, i've been having this issue on Windows 10 (when i was using it before), on Parrot OS 6-7, on Debian Trixie, on Mint (live USB) and right now on Void Linux. So, the service is up and running, but when i enter into bluetoothctl, when i do this:

bluetoothctl

[NEW] Media /org/bluez/hci0

`SupportedUUIDs: 0000110a-0000-1000-8000-00805f9b34fb`

`SupportedUUIDs: 0000110b-0000-1000-8000-00805f9b34fb`

Agent registered

[bluetoothctl]> power on

Changing power on succeeded

[bluetoothctl]> agent on

Agent is already registered

[bluetoothctl]> default-agent

Default agent request successful

[bluetoothctl]> scan on

SetDiscoveryFilter success

Discovery started

[CHG] Controller 38:D5:7A:D0:65:C8 Discovering: yes

It just hangs there and doesn't scan a damn device at all.. It just hangs on this, and my Bluetooth is not blocked at all if i rfkill list as here:

rfkill list

0: hci0: Bluetooth

`Soft blocked: no`

`Hard blocked: no`

1: phy0: Wireless LAN

`Soft blocked: no`

`Hard blocked: no`

And yes, the service is running in case you wonder:

sudo sv status bluetoothd

run: bluetoothd: (pid 790) 24897s; run: log: (pid 786) 24897s

Yes, i admit i've used AI to investigate further and discard other causes, so the AI suggested i create this file because it had to do something about the poor way it handled autosuspend and power management for this device:

cat /etc/modprobe.d/btusb.conf

options btusb enable_autosuspend=0

options btusb reset=1

This is what i get after i boot up, log in, start my dbus session with mango and check the dmesg:

sudo dmesg | grep rtw88_8821ce

[ 8.653401] rtw88_8821ce 0000:01:00.0: enabling device (0000 -> 0003)

[ 8.654153] rtw88_8821ce 0000:01:00.0: Firmware version 24.11.0, H2C version 12

[ 8.934673] rtw88_8821ce 0000:01:00.0 wlo1: renamed from wlan0

[ 9.822714] rtw88_8821ce 0000:01:00.0 wlo1: renamed from wlan0 (while UP)

lsmod | grep bluetooth

bluetooth 1228800 35 btrtl,btmtk,btintel,btbcm,bnep,btusb,hci_vhci,rfcomm

rfkill 45056 5 hp_wmi,bluetooth,cfg80211

crc16 12288 2 bluetooth,ext4

ecdh_generic 16384 3 bluetooth,tpm

I use pipewire with wireplumber as followed in the Void manual, and these are the packages that i installed:

xbps-query -s bluetooth

[*] bluez-5.86_2 Bluetooth tools and daemons

[*] ldacBT-2.0.2.3_1 LDAC Bluetooth encoder library

[*] libbluetooth-5.86_2 Library to use the Bluez Linux Bluetooth Stack

[*] libspa-bluetooth-1.6.10_1 Server and user space API to deal with multimedia pipelines - bluetooth plugins

[*] sbc-2.2_1 Bluetooth Subband Codec (SBC) library

Has anyone been in this situation before? Is this possible to fix (yes i checked the device myself while upgrading the ram and it seems fine, no physical damage that can be seen on the spot), because i do not know what to do at this point. This is Linux, everything has to be fixable somehow...

Thank you for any help or advice and for rejecting systemd

Network Manager keeps being a pos

So I use network manager alongside kde plasma and for some reason my network would sometimes randomly disconnect for no reason, I dont have a laptop so that isnt the problem. Idk how to explain it properly but it js some days it will work fine and some days it will keep randomly disconnect, usually when im on calls on discord or sometimes on a roblox game. I know those are two bad examples but its the only time they occured.

Void Linux stopped booting randomly

I am currently running void Linux on my HDD with windows being on my SSD.
Yes I know windows sucks but i keep it as a backup if things like this happen.
For some reason when I tried to boot into void Linux through my boot menu, it just shows me a black screen
not even grub is showing
I tried different key binds to see if anything pops up like a tty or the grub config thing that you can edit temporarily.
It was almost a fresh install except of qtile mangowm and bspwm,
I have changed no configs other than those for the window managers and sxhkd for bspwm.
I have also not made any changes to the EFI partition which is on the HDD since for some reason my windows bootloader is also on there.
I do have SDDM and KDE installed as a backup just in case my window managers have any errors.
I am also relatively new to Linux
been using it for the past I think 2 years but still in the intermediate phase.
If you have any suggestions pls drop them in the replies :)
Thanks.
(PS: please dont mind my typing mistakes :).)

EAC v2 hope core

With the announcement of EAC v2 do you think that there might be a chance to also make it functional under void linux or do you think it will be too tied to systemd services?

It includes a systemd service, but the service only starts when a protected game starts and it stops when the game exits.

I use Arch, should I switch to Void?

I've been using Arch for quite some time now, and it works, but I was wondering if Void is better? Many people have been telling me this, but they never actually give me an answer.

EDIT: Thanks so much for your suggestions, I will try it out on a VM and switch if I prefer (which is what I should've done from the start😅)!

BTRFS Subvolumes aren't working (in general)

***Title correction: BTRFS Subvolumes are not handled correctly by the installer**

I verified it now on two instances- a barebone and a VM- with the same result:
the commands "mount /dev/sdXn -o subvol=/@ /mnt/" and in fstab "UUID=My-UUID /    btrfs  subvol=/@,defaults,noatime,compress=zstd 0 0" aren't working.

I verified it consulting the original BTRFS documentation, in all kind of variants (It made no difference if I use subvolid, subvol in any flavour with "@" or "/@"). Subvolumes aren't working in VOID.
Error Message: When I run the mount command, the subvol gets copied over to /mnt/ rather than referencing it, and /mnt/ ends up blank- even if I had mounted before the full system into /mnt with "mount /dev/sdXn /mnt/" this mount disappears and the mount just shows a blank content section, in contrary to what all docs expect from this. It's odd that mount throws no error, never.
I am on version void-live-x86_64-20250202-xfce from last week, pretty fresh installs.

I haven't counterchecked against another distro/VM but ask already in parallel, if there is any kernel switch or a grub switch missing here?
And if not- where could I log a bug ?
Thanks for supporting this.

A Pipewire crash temporary solution

So after research of crashing pipewire in mid session I'm found a solution which can helps with crashes. I'm using only sway, so I don't know about any other de/wm.

In sway config im added `xwayland disable` to disable a xwayland and rebooted. And now pipewire works fine without crashes.

But this solution have a the other side. X11 apps won't works anymore of course.

And sorry for bad english or not a very neat post but I hope this helps you!

EDIT: Oh, I forgot to say that in my opinion, the crashes occur after updating libX11.

EDIT2: Thie post written for pipewire version 1.6.9. And now in pipewire 1.6.10 that fixed so you don't need disabling xwayland on sway config

Tracking config_files

voidlinux allows one to edit system configuration files (think /etc/passwd etc) and subsequent system updates don't zap your changes.

If the upstream version in the repository changes then the new improved version is saved at eg /etc/passwd.new-1.2_1 and such files tend to accumulate unless you are diligent in merging them.

All this gives rise to a couple of questions.

What files have I changed?

Maybe find /etc -name '*.new-*' is enough, but it's probably better to look at all config_files and check their hash in the xbps database. For example:

# xbps-conf-diff
MODIFIED acpid /etc/acpi/handler.sh
MODIFIED autofs /etc/autofs/auto.net
MODIFIED base-files /etc/crypttab
MODIFIED base-files /etc/fstab
MODIFIED base-files /etc/group
MODIFIED base-files /etc/hosts
MODIFIED base-files /etc/passwd
MODIFIED base-files /etc/subgid
MODIFIED base-files /etc/subuid
MODIFIED bluez /etc/bluetooth/main.conf
MODIFIED brother-brscan4 /etc/opt/brother/scanner/brscan4/brsanenetdevice4.cfg
MODIFIED cups /etc/cups/printers.conf
MODIFIED dict /etc/dict/dict.conf
MODIFIED glibc-locales /etc/default/libc-locales
MODIFIED grub /etc/default/grub
MODIFIED iproute2 /etc/iproute2/rt_tables
PENDING libnfsidmap /etc/idmapd.conf /etc/idmapd.conf.new-1.2_1
MODIFIED lvm2 /etc/lvm/lvm.conf
MODIFIED openresolv /etc/resolvconf.conf
MODIFIED runit-void /etc/hostname
MODIFIED runit-void /etc/locale.conf

Note that the change in /etc/idmapd.conf is PENDING so I need to merge the new version. The others have not had an upstream change since I made my changes or they have already been merged - but it's useful to know about eg should probably be saving all these files in my regular backups.

What have I changed compared to the upstream version?

# xbps-conf-diff /etc/hostname
===== /etc/hostname  (package: runit-void) =====
--- diff against repository version
    ('-' = yours, '+' = new upstream)
--- /etc/hostname 2025-06-25 20:01:39.819535159 +1000
+++ /tmp/xbps-conf-diff.11569.runit-void.hostname     2026-10-26 17:32:02.745766833 +1000
@@ -1 +1 @@
-naan
+void-live

... I changed the hostname - a trivial example.

The help text:

$ xbps-conf-diff -h
usage: xbps-conf-diff [-h] [-V] [-l | -d] [PKG|FILE ...]

List locally modified XBPS configuration files, or diff them against the
latest version in the remote repo. Each argument may be an installed package
or a configuration file; by default a package is listed and a file is diffed.
With no arguments, all packages are listed (or diffed, with -d). Run as root
so all of /etc is readable (no files will be modified). Diff requires an
active network to retrieve the latest version (this may not be the same as
the installed version!!) unless a pending .new-* file exists. An argument
containing '/' is always treated as a file.

positional arguments:
  PKG|FILE installed package(s) and/or configuration file(s); default:
                 all packages

options:
-h, --help show this help message and exit
-V, --version show program's version number and exit
-l, --list list the modified files of each PKG or FILE (the files that
differ from the version recorded when the package was
                 installed)
-d, --diff diff each PKG or FILE against the most recent version in the
(remote) repo; for a package, diff all of its modified files

It's written in python and I had claude run up the initial version, which I've tweaked to my satisfaction. For the AI-averse - so far it hasn't corrupted anything, attempted to take over my household, or tried for world domination. Your mileage may vary.

It's at gitlab if you want it.

Closing steam crashes pipewire & waybar....

hey all i've been using clankers and looking online for answers and solution to this issue but can't seem to figure it out.

Closign steam crashes pipewire which often times cascades into a waybar crash. Initially i thoguht it was the page limits but then it's an OOM error in waybar (when it crashes). i've also notices via running via terminal both apps to see what errors get logged that the reason for pipewire crashing is module-x11-bell...

[W][12:54:43.206919] mod.x11-bell | [module-x11-bell.:  321 x11_io_error_handler()] X11 I/O error handler called on display :0

Segmentation fault pipewire

any solutions to this issue, i know it was most likely the recent steam update that caused this cause it wasn't crashing before, but it's driving me crazy. the weird thing is I have all the necessary packages installed for it AND their 32-bit counterparts just to be safe.

thanks for any and all help

EDIT: It's definitely not a RAM or true memory issue as i have 24gb of RAM available AND 6gb of swap

Betacraft won’t launch on Voidlinux

I recently installed the latest portable jar version of the betacraft Minecraft launcher. It’s been set to jdk8 in the instance settings. I tried launching the game signed out of Microsoft then into Microsoft and the game does not load up, the terminal just says that the client has closed. Also, the reason why I am using Betacraft is to create a Minecraft poly world.

Can anyone comment on the effect of this TLS cert fiasco on Voidlinux?

The certs were issued on April 30th so potentially poison anything built after that time.

I suppose that firefox is the primary point of weakness (but also thunderbird? ... others?). Also the void build chain?

Help needed

I have been using void for quite a while and I enjoyed it , but I wanna try out s different distro , and also increase the storage of my void linux system , which is initially 300 gigs , I wanna extend that to 500 gigs , so how do I do that
