Question QTEs in Renpy

• Upvotes

Hey everyone! I wanted to add a QTE to my renpy game. Think like the Until Dawn QTEs. I was wondering if anyone else has made anything similar and would be willing to let me know how you made it.

If so, I would appreciate it. I'm not the strongest coder and I'm really struggling here lol. Either way, thank you for taking the time to read this. Have a good day!

RECRUITING [Hobby] DreamStage is looking for collaborators!

Hello, I am Lily for the last 3 years our team has been developing a Unity based Visual Novel Idol Rhythm game. The game was originally inspired by the Love Live anime series.

There is full voice acting for everything for the entire main story. Just about everything else is original too including music, sfx, UI, Programming, Art etc. There is a playable version of the game. Script is halfway at 50K/100k words. Team has 16 members in various roles. Much of our team has experience. Several collaborators have stood by the project for the entire time as well.

Sound Producer - We require an individual who can produce SFX, normalize voice recordings and work with voice actors to make their lines into game ready deliverables. Other key responsibilities require dialogue splitting and maintaining file naming conventions. We want you to shape the audio personality of DreamStage.

2D Character Artist - We require a capable 2D character artist capable of replicating an existing art style. Main responsibilities will be to create facial expressions and poses for our characters to use in the narrative content.

2D Promotional Artist - This role requires a capable 2D artist cable of replicating an existing art style. Main responsibilities are working alongside our marketing and narrative team to design storyboard content for social media/in-game purposes.

2D Background Artist - We require a background artist capable of copying a pre-existing art style. Background Artists should have some strong skills in framing and perspective as much of the work requires drawing real life buildings from google maps. Much of the artwork is just typical Japanese streets or cityscapes.

Producer - We require a collaborator capable of managing team deadlines and coordinating work across our kanban board.

Art Director - We require someone who can document the art pipeline and work process. We need someone who can preferable replicate the art style and provide guidance to our art department on artistic consistency with the established work.

CG Artist - We require an artist capable of making full character + background illustrations for the game. Replicating an artstyle is a must.

I am more than happy to provide project materials or additional content through DM. You can find me on discord!

RECRUITING Translation of THE CHiRAL NIGHT rhythm carnival

Hello and apologies if the flair is wrong (but I guess RECRUTING is fitting in my case)

I have the official copy of THE CHiRAL NIGHT rhythm carnival and I have the English translation on hand (only story mode). I tried to translate the text (by using Mwarestuff and unpacking .npk files into .nut files, changing some lines, and then repacking back), but every time I do this, the game crashes. It happens even when I don't change anything (as in, translate lines) and simply do unpack - repack operations.

So, I am looking for anyone experienced with .npk files, which are used by NitroChiral to help in translation as, unfortunately, I barely has any experience in modifying game files and, perhaps, I am missing something.

If you can help, please DM me and I can explain everything in more details.

Thank you and I hope everyone has a great day!

Question Finding artists/animators to collaborate with?

Hi!! This is more of an "in the future" thing because my game is so early in development but I was wondering, how do you guys find artists/animators that are willing to work with you? I'm an enjoyer of collaboration with others and I like the idea of something with random artstyle changes or multiple artstyles stuck together, so I was curious or not whether you guys had any advice on that front.

Question questions with tyranobuilder

I genuinely need help because all the posts on here I see of TB are deleted so I can’t comment and ask questions. Look, my partner and I have NO knowledge about coding, just the most basic stuff and on college we gotta do this video game for november, like, done, completely. So there’s no time to learn coding and check if it’s good, SO, I need to know, can I import animations onto TB? Not do it IN it but to import stuff and yk, we don’t wanna buy it and waste our money, but still want the VN to look as we desire with the aesthetics of our GGD, etc etc, is it okay??? or too basic??

RECRUITING Looking for a Small Team to Create a Caught by a Spider Fan Continuation

Hi everyone!

I'm a fan of Caught by a Spider (CBAS) by Pitouhui, and I'd like to explore the possibility of creating a fan-made continuation of the visual novel.

The idea

I'd like to create an additional story branching from an ending that isn't currently featured in the game's gallery. I believe CBAS has a lot of potential for further storytelling, but I don't have a finalized plot yet. I'd like to develop it together with the team while preserving the original Spider's personality, the atmosphere, and the ambiguity of the original game.

I'm looking for:

- A Ren'Py programmer to implement dialogue, scenes, choices, and branching paths.

- A 2D artist to create character sprites, expressions, backgrounds, and illustrations.

- A writer / story editor to help develop the plot, dialogue, and characters.

My role

I'll coordinate the project, organize discussions and tasks, and help with Russian translation. I have some basic programming knowledge and am willing to learn Ren'Py, but I'm still a beginner at game development.

I want the team to collaborate on the story rather than simply follow a plot I've already written. The first step would be to discuss ideas and see what we can realistically create together.

Important details

- This is an unpaid, volunteer hobby project. I cannot offer financial compensation.

- I'm currently seeking permission from the original author, Pitouhui. We won't use or redistribute the original game's code or assets without appropriate authorization.

- This is an unofficial fan project, not an official sequel. A public release isn't guaranteed.

If you're interested in CBAS and would enjoy working on a story-driven visual novel, please comment below or send me a DM. Tell me a little about your experience and which role you'd be interested in.

Thanks for reading!

RESOURCE I made NEVEL-98, a fantasy computer for making PC-98 style visual novels

Thumbnail gallery
57 Upvotes

Hi! I’ve loved PC-98 visual novels for years, so I made NEVEL-98: a small fantasy computer for making VNs the way they looked back then.

  • 640×400, 16 colors out of 4096, dithering tools
  • 6-channel FM synth and a music tracker
  • A visual novel engine in Lua (scenes, choices, saves, multiple endings)
  • Built-in editors for code, pixel art, texts, sound and music
  • Share your game as a floppy-disk PNG or a single web page

The limits are on purpose: the PC-98 devs made unforgettable games with sixteen colors and a floppy disk, and I think constraints are what make you focus on the story.

Try it in your browser, with a short demo you can play and take apart: https://nevel98.bluemoon.moe

RECRUITING I want to made small siquel for CBAS (caught by a spider)

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I recently played the game Caught by a Spider and really enjoyed it, but I was disappointed that the story ended before it even truly began. Because of this, I’m looking to put together a team to create a sequel mod for the game. I’m looking for a coder, an artist, a writer, and possibly someone I’ll be happy to hear from anyone interested!

About my role in this project: I will be acting as the project manager and lead architect. I am organizing this process, which means I will be handling deadlines, assigning tasks, and coordinating the team to ensure the project moves forward smoothly and doesn't get abandoned. I am currently learning C++ and logical systems, so while I won’t be writing the Python/Ren'Py code myself, I will fully focus on making sure our workflow is solid and structured.

Regarding the original developer (Pitouhui): I have already reached out to her in direct messages on X (Twitter) to ask for official permission. We are starting this development on our own risk as an unofficial fan-made expansion patch (DLC mod). If she responds with a green light, that will be perfect, but for now, we are moving forward regardless to make a direct continuation that builds tightly on the original endings to fill that heavy feeling of emptiness the game left us with.

I strongly believe the CBAS community has a lot of unharvested potential. Instead of just complaining and writing text stories, we can actually build a proper continuation. If you want to build something real for the fandom and aren't afraid of working with deadlines under my coordination, please reply here or DM me directly. Let's make this happen!

I should mention right away that I haven’t yet received permission from Pitouhui to create an add-on, so if anything changes, I’ll post an update.

RESOURCE Soft launch: VN-Mikro — script-first VN runtime (Godot under the hood; looking for a few people to try it)

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hey folks,

I've been building a little visual novel runtime and finally soft-launched it: VN-Mikro.

The idea is simple. You write the story in plain script.txt, put staging and UI in JSON, drop pictures and music into folders, and run an Author Player. Godot 4 is under the hood, but you don't open or install the Godot editor to write.

If you know old script-first Japanese tools like KiriKiri / KAG, the spirit is closer to that than to a full game IDE: plain script, data beside it, player runs the folder.

I wanted that "write like a play" workflow, with the boring VN stuff already there: saves that bring the whole scene back, rollback, history, extra panels (including chat-style append), live reload, project checks, and building from the player.

There's a small jam game I shipped with it too (Cold Down), if you want to see a finished project on this stack.

It's early, and I'm looking for a few real projects to try it on: jam games, small passion VNs, anything where you'd actually write scenes. Happy to help with setup and the awkward first bits. Blunt feedback welcome too: what feels unclear or in the way.

Don't be scared of the download size the pack: includes the player plus a bunch of examples, so you can open one and poke around immediately.

itch: https://stopandgo.itch.io/vn-mikro
docs: https://stopngo.github.io/vn-mikro-docs/
Cold Down: https://stopandgo.itch.io/cold-down

I'll hang around in the comments, or DM me if you want to try it on a real project.

RECRUITING [ UNPAID ] looking for coder who can help code minigames

Mainly because trying to code them on my own is literally triggering my chronic migraines and I would like to avoid being in pain for the sake of a horror visual novel. Please note that you will have to be 18+ and be aware that this game deals with heavy subject matter such as:

- bigotry

- s/a + rape

- mental illness / self harm / suicide

- body horror / blood / gore

- dereality/unreality

- animal death/implied animal cruelty

Please do not apply if you are just gonna vibecode. Thank you!

The minigames in question would mostly just boil down to either drag and drop, timing, or point and click. They'd mostly be in universe chores like stacking boxes or cooking or what have you.

Any help is appreciated, thank you!

EDIT: completely slipped my mind, but I'm developing this in Ren'py!

RECRUITING Looking for a Non-native English VN Developer to Exchange Visual Novel Translations (Ukrainian ↔ Your Language)

Hi everyone!

I'm looking for a native speaker (not English) who develops visual novel and would be interested in a translation exchange.

The idea is simple: we'll use English as an intermediate language for our translation exchange. I'll translate your visual novel from English into Ukrainian, and you'll translate mine from English into your native language. This way, we can both make our games accessible to a new audience without having to pay for professional translation.

I'm looking for someone who:

  • Is a native speaker of a language other than English.
  • Develops their own visual novel.
  • Is interested in having their game translated into Ukrainian.
  • Is willing to translate my visual novel into their native language.

I'm happy to discuss the scope of both projects and make sure the amount of work is fair for both sides.

If you're interested, leave a comment or send me a DM! Please tell me a little about your project and which language you speak.

Looking forward to finding someone to collaborate with!

LOOKING FOR WORK Looking To Volunteer to learn to make VNs

I've been interested in choice based games for a while now, and I recently started playing some classic visual novels. I'd like to try my hand at making some.

My main skill is creating character sprites, but I also want to practice working on backgrounds and CGs.

DM me if you're interested, and I can send you my Discord. I'm not looking for anything too long, so game jams or projects that last around a month would be ideal.

Question help with visual novel ideas

Hello!

I had to resort to this since it's the only source I can get help from without accidentally snitching on myself 😰

Context: My boyfriend's birthday is in a few weeks and I would love to surprise him by making a small visual novel for him, since I can't really give him anything physical because he now lives in another continent. I need help with ideas on what to make the visual novel about, since my mind is completely blank. I know this might be a little dumb, but it's my last resort.

So please, if anyone could give me an idea or something I could base the game on, it would be GREAT.

ANYTHING IS APPRECIATED!!!!!!

RECRUITING [ UNPAID ] looking for Black sensitivity reader

okay so this is probably an Unconventional request but I'm looking for a sensitivity reader for my game! The sensitivity reader sub doesn't have much activity so I'm asking here instead. For context, I am not black.

You'd only be reading the outline of the plot and the character profiles. Communication would be through discord and you have to be comfortable with sharing your Google account so you can access and comment on the doc.

Please note that the outline isn't finished yet, but I'm putting this out there early in case getting responses is slow for whatever reason. Outline should take up to a few weeks, if everything goes right. Thank you for reading.

Discussion Storyomi Update: It has been a while since i've made an update post for this. We have gotten performance improvements, and a new mascot.

The most striking change is visual, it now has a new landing page and a mascot.

Storyomi landing page

A lot of work has gone into polishing the whole website and improve the experience for creators and readers alike.

  • Every page should now load faster, including the games, which now open faster.
  • I also rewrote the game engine so that its less error prone.
  • We have analytics now. game wise or global.
  • Ability to share games easily with a button.
  • You can write stories from your phone too now (its no longer broken haha)

And more changes. I'll leave the link here, I'm looking for creators to help me decide which direction to take this, and what is lacking.

Question How do I find someone to edit a script

I’m one hundred percent going to pay (not sure if the title made it seem like I wasn’t). I’m not hiring at the moment just asking a question.

I’m looking for someone who can go over grammar and make sure nothing is dumb sounding. Would a book editor be the route to go? Or is there someone specialized in it? I tried a Google search but I ended up with links to engines and coding websites.
