Help Restarting after a hiatus and have an old backup, best way forward?

Couldn't come up with a better title, sorry.

{ VB 7.2, host Fedora 44, Guest Windows 11 Pro, guest additions were installed }

I had virtualbox installed on Fedora 42 with a working VM. The vm files were in a separate partition: /vbdata. Then for reasons I had to do a bare metal install of Fedora 44; I backed up the partition but did not install VB in the new environment. Didn't think I would need it again. Now (of course) I do, so I am going to install VB and (hopefully) get the VM back. Apart from the backed up /vbdata, I don't have the specs that I used for the VM available.

Can I install VB, <do some things>, and carry on as before? What are the <some things>?

State of play: I have installed VB 7.2, recovered the backed up vbdata partition, started VB, set the VM directory to /vbdata, stopped and restarted VB. At this point it identifies the saved VM from my last install, the spec looks OK, so I start it, and it just hangs. So there's either a crucial step I have omitted, or the whole approach is wrong.
