Haul Gifted to me

More photos added - sort the post by newest....A few photos added in comments....Over dinner a couple months ago, a childhood friend of mine mentioned that she and her husband had his late parents’ collection in storage and wanted to give it away… They have no interest in vinyl and are just burning money paying for storage. The one caveat is, if you want it, you have to take all of it. Her husband estimated one pickup bed load….This happened…

Craigslist seems to be making a major comeback for whatever reason.

Saw this post and had to jump on it.

Took 2 trips to pick everything up and still going through, but the ladies husband passed away and just wanted to get rid of everything.

I may go back and buy the turntable if she’s not able to sell it as well.

Came out to about $4-5 CAD ($2.8-3.60 USD) per record

I ❤️ dumpster picking. I went to this location early in the week (found some brand new Life Straws) but didn’t spot these until our walk last night. It’s been rainy but thankfully they were under some other garbage bags. Please share thoughts, I might need a bigger record holder (last pic)

Haul $1/ea at the thrift store!

Went to one of my less frequented thrift stores and as i rounded the corner to the records i spotted dark side of the moon. I was excited but apprehensive, assuming the record would be missing or completely trashed. As i looked it over i noticed little creatures. Then i started to dig. I couldn't believe what i was seeing.

So anyway, $1/ea and they're all complete and good to very good condition. 41 total. I even left behind a few things for somebody else.

Haul Got all this for $30 at an estate sale

I went to an estate sale on Saturday and picked up a few records then went back today and got a bunch more. Today was the last day of the sale so they were just giving them away. I ended up paying $10 a box and they were big boxes. I've since transferred them into my crates so that I can sort and clean them easier. There's a mix of Rock, Pop, New Wave, Synthpop, Disco, Funk, Jazz, Folk and more. I also bought 100+ CDs, maybe 20ish DVDs and a gigantic box of cassette tapes. I spent less than $100 for everything. I go to thrift stores, flea markets and everything in between regularly and finally got super lucky

My grandparents are starting to downsize and gave me all their old records, I don't know much about vinyl to be honest, but I will be busy googling all of them when I get more free time.

I separated some of them after going through them quickly.

Lots of random Austrian/European vinyl in there also, but most are from Australia.

Haul UHQR Haul!

This was only one of the purchases I made this month… I may have a problem….

The three I already owned are Kind of Blue, Can’t buy a Thrill, and Are You Experienced. The rest I received yesterday. The sound on the UHQRs that I own is second to none and I pretty much only buy brand new or NM or M- records. Hilariously my TT is in the shop!

A little about UHQR - Ultra High Quality Record was originally pioneered by Mofi in the 80s. These days they are made by Analog Productions the flagship label of Acoustic Sounds. Here are some of the specs:

200 gram clarity vinyl. Vinyl is naturally clear. Black pigment is added for visual consistency and to hide defects. By stripping away the magnetic properties and microscopic contaminants found in black carbon, the noise floor is reduce to almost dead silent background.

Unlike Mofi, UHQR Never uses digital files, they are always cut from the original masters from sound engineers such as Bernie Grundman and Chris Bellman. They aren’t all 45rpm but 90% are and I think those that aren’t have 45rpm options on the way.

The packaging is first class, a box within a box within a box. Like Russian dolls but with records. I’m happy to have almost all the current UHQRs with the exception of The Who, one or two jazz records I already own and some Bob that I’m waiting for the 45rpm version.

TLDR: UHQR: The highest quality analog records you can buy. If anyone is wondering if this is worth it I think the answer is resoundingly yes but it does depend on your vinyl playback system and what you value in our crazy addiction of our hobby that is collecting.

Found someone online selling a few tubs of records. (For the first time in forever) I was really close by and first in line.
Half of the lot is ‘60s and ‘70s rock, half is classical, Irish folk music, and crooners. I always wonder how collections end up looking like that. Is it the evolution of one person’s interests, or a couple different collections smooshed together…
Extremely excited for these OG Stooges, and I’m gonna heavily upgrade my Eno/Roxy/Cale stuff.
Thank you to the original owner for taking such nice care of these!

Haul A random FB Marketplace haul I impulsively picked up for $100. Never listened to any of these albums. How’d I do?

Post image

Context: I live in rural MT so finding ANY records for sale that isn’t country & western (or Herb Alpert’s Whipped Cream & Other Delights) is surprising. I’ve heard some Modest Mouse and Flaming Lips, but the rest is pretty foreign to me. Probably will end up reselling some of it. So what’s the consensus: did I score, or should the fiancé restrict my marketplace perusing?

I was thrifting today when I saw a fresh haul of four crates of vinyl coming out. I picked up as many as I can. Bunch of soul & funk, mixed in with some rock & pop.

My favorites are the Sade, Funkadelic & Swamp Dogg ones. All original pressings too, each ranged from $3-$6!

Some UK pressings were in the haul also.

All I could see from the sellers listing was the spine for the 38 Special album and decided oh what the hell I'll give it a shot.

I am speechless. First grouping of albums are the ones I recognize the albums or artists. Second grouping were either totally unfamiliar with or only sort of know the name. I can't wait to listen, would love to hear about some of the albums I'm less familiar with from the third photo if you'd like to share about an album you love!

Haul Just ordered the LP120X so excited

Post image
793 Upvotes

Was deciding between the fluance RT81+ or this almost pulled the trigger on the Fluance, then I went back to check on the LP120X and seen that it had gone on sale for 399 (450 shipped) so it basically decided for me. In the long run this is honestly a better choice I feel, I’m absolutely in love with this colour.

Hopefully I’m able to sleep but I don’t think I’m going to until it’s here, beyond stoked. My old record player is a 6in one from prob early 2010s, I found it by the dumpster it really got me to start collecting. So it’ll always have a place in my heart, but I knew I always needed an upgrade.

Btw for those who might be wondering. My speakers are the Edifier MR3 bookshelf speakers, I’ve only had them for about a month but so far they sound unreal. And I’ve heard pretty good things about them. Got them for 120$. Again not trying to break the bank. I think this set up will be really solid for years to come.

The duality of man.

(So I have to figure some shit to say so I can reach 300 characters.)

I guess I’ll say that being that I’m a grunge kid, I went into an obligatory Nine Inch Nails phase. The first song that stuck out to me on my first listen was “A Warm Place.” Something about its quiet melancholy affected me so much more than the abrasive screaming of the other tracks. Being that this follows “Big Man With a Big Gun,” that track provided just the right amount of tonal whiplash.

Hope that’s 300 characters.

Made my first pilgrimage to Ameoba Music in Hollywood. No pictures can capture the beauty of this place. I only had an hour so I decided to dig their clearance bin. Love that even in the clearance section all records a super clean. Picked up about 20 records, most of them $1.99 with a few $2.99 and $3.99.Brought along my "Platter-pak" from the '50s my aunt gifted me.

Haul Mystery Boxes at local record store

Thumbnail

1.7k Upvotes

One of our local record stores in Columbus, Ohio, Used Kids, has always had these “Mystery Boxes”. Sometimes they are completely random, and sometimes they are genre based. Does anyone else have any local record stores that do anything like this? If so, and you’ve partaken in these mystery boxes, have they been a complete bust or have there been any gems that have been included in these boxes? Is this something that you’d buy, based off what they are advertising?: 300+ LPs for $40? Or do you think it’s more of a waste than anything? We have no idea the condition of these records, and obviously, we can inspect them before purchasing.

Haul Think I found a forbidden one

Post image

So I visited a nearby goodwill that I never went to, was going thru the old LPs when suddenly this one came up. Living in Germany it is forbidden by law to sell and purchase this kind of stuff I think. The woman at the counter of the shop went thru the stack to tell me a price for all of the LPs when seeing the Adolf she started grinning but she still sold it to me without mentioning it. By the way it was 2€
