Sticky Post your questions & inquiries here! - r/Vietnam monthly random discussion thread - F.A.Q

Please read the 3rd rule of the sub. Don't post your general questions & inquiries outside of this thread as they will be removed.

Lots of your questions have been answered already so make sure you do a search before asking (how-to below).

To keep this subreddit tidy, we have this monthly thread that is open for random discussions and questions. If you post your basic/general questions outside of this thread they will be removed. Sorry, we want to make this sub friendly but also want it to be clean and organized.

Some examples of the questions that should be posted here:

  • Questions that can be answered with just Yes/No
  • Basic questions like "Where can I buy this?"
  • Questions that were asked many times before. Please do your research
  • Questions that are not specific

Tips to quickly find answers for your questions:

Many of your questions may have been answered since people keep asking the same ones again and again. Here is a quick tip to find the answers for yours.

First, have a look at our old sticky threads. A lot of useful information there. A lot of questions have been answered.

You can also use the search feature of Reddit, just like you do with Google.

Another option is to use Google, as Google understands your queries better than Reddit and can return better results.

Go to Google. Add 'site:https://www.reddit.com/r/VietNam/' next to your queries (without quotes). For example, if I want to find info on eVisa in this subreddit, my query to put in Google is 'eVisa site:https://www.reddit.com/r/VietNam/'.

Sticky Hướng dẫn sử dụng r/Vietnam - How to r/Vietnam

(please find English below)

Hello and welcome to r/Vietnam. Below are some quick guidelines to help you better participate in the community activities.

  • r/Vietnam is now a dual language subreddit. You can use both English and Vietnamese here.
  • Please read the rules before participating, making a submission or comment. You can find them on the Sidebar (Desktop), About tab (Mobile), or this thread
  • Trivial questions that can be answered quickly, or google-able, or without the intention of creating a discussion, should be posted in the sticky thread. Travel/visa questions should be posted there too.
  • r/Vietnam has a Discord server here which aims to be more open and flexible to handle more casual conversations. You can also find both English and Vietnamese channels there.

About the changelog.

I've made some changes to the sub:

  • Re-writing the rules to make them more concise. Adding Vietnamese.
  • Remove some unnecessary flairs.
  • Big change: Switching r/Vietnam to a dual-language subreddit. This is based on the fact that the number of Vietnamese people in this sub has increased significantly. I know this is controversial and some of you don't like this but I think we should just give it a try.
  • Making a Discord server. This is after r/place event that I realized we need a place to handle future events like this better and for the ease of casual, chit-chat type of conversations.

Daily life/Đời thường The Ba Vì safari situation has escalated

Citizens in the area designated for land reclaimation have been clashing directly with Sun Group corporate officials, though it has now resulted in casualties.

Context: Sun Group planned to build an unannounced Safari by having the local government reclaiming land from citizens in the area. The construction began just some days after announcement in 9/10, leaving no time for people living there to prepare and move while being under compensated for their losses. Local backlash has been immense with policemen having to contain protests and protect Sun Group employees

Down a side alley, you'll find Ba Duong.

Remember to also order the pork skewers, they're fantastic.

I usually prefer fish sauce, but their house thick brown dipping sauce has a semi-sweet aroma and taste that's amazing.

Don't forget the raw garlic cloves and mountain of fresh veggies. And of course, the overall vibe and energy of this place makes it my go-to in Da Nang.

Best to go in early evening so you can later walk off this feast!

Travel Experience/Du lịch HCMC -> Phnom Penh

• Upvotes

I want to get on a coach bus from Saigon to Phnom Penh but I'm very scared because of the abundant kidnapping stories on Vietnamese social media. Is there a reliable bus operator that won't put me at risk of this? I'm not scared of being kidnapped once in Phnom Penh, just that I might be on the journey there.

Discussion/Thảo luận What US companies get wrong when they hire dev teams in Vietnam (from someone in the middle)

I work in HCMC at a software company with US clients, mostly on the business side. I spend my nights on calls with American CTOs and my days hearing the Vietnamese side of the same story.

A few patterns I keep seeing:

  • They hire for price, then complain about communication. The cheapest teams are usually the ones with the least English practice. The code is often fine. The misunderstanding isn’t.
  • They add a middleman. One client of ours had a US CTO, a PM in Mexico and a team in Vietnam. Nobody shared a language or a time zone. Deadlines slipped and nobody could say why.
  • They read silence as agreement. A lot of devs here won’t say “this spec doesn’t make sense” in a meeting with a foreign boss. Ask “what would you change?” and you get completely different answers.
  • They forget Tết exists. Every year someone plans a big release for late January.

Vietnamese devs and anyone who’s worked with US teams: what’s the thing you wish clients understood?

Discussion/Thảo luận Trẻ em - tự nguyện và sự đồng ý

• Upvotes

Discussion/Thảo luận Things to do in Hoi An - Trip advice

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,

My family is visiting in December and we're so excited! I've been trying to plan out our trip, initially we were going to do Ho Chi Minh, Hanoi, and Hoi An within a two week trip but we're worried it might be too rushed and we wouldn't be able to explore and enjoy without being exhausted.

So now we're looking at doing Ho Chi Minh and Hoi An (really sad to miss the scenic beauty of the North!), and I was hoping you could give any advice on what we could do or see so that we get to fully enjoy and see in those areas.

Thank you!

Discussion/Thảo luận Where to renewal for 5 year exemption

For those in Saigon or Hue, where do you go to get the 5-year exemption Visa renewal?

How much did it cost?

Also, for "Citizen Identity Card (CIC; Căn cước công dân)" , do you have to be VN citizen or just born in VN with paperworks?

Looking for a place to make Citizen Identity Card in Saigon.

Travel Experience/Du lịch Shit Rental Agent in Dalat. Be Aware.

Post image
20 Upvotes

Be aware of this rental agent (possibly others as well). They are found in almost every Facebook dalat rental group.

I texted this agent one day before, asking to check a place at 10AM next day and wanting to rent very very soon. Finally, the time had come (it was 10AM), literally had to text him "proactively" first to know that the place was rented out already.

Wasted the money and time to get on Grab. Literally no business ethics at all.

He could have texted even 10 minutes before the agreed-upon time.

UPDATE:

It seems many people have also encountered these shit agents before. To combat them, these are the different agents that POSTED the exact (100%) same apartment after one of the agents said it's been rented out. Be aware of these scammers.

Discussion/Thảo luận Plastic Surgery / Breast Aug?

I plan to get breast augmentation done in Saigon and wanted to know anyone’s recommendations of plastic surgeons. I’m considering “Benh Vien Tham My Viet My” or “Vietnamese American Beauty Hospital” with Dr. Thai since I’ve heard a lot about him.

Would love to hear people’s thoughts, experiences, and best places to go!

Culture/Văn hóa Would this be a weird Vietnamese name to have?

My vietnamese tutor is asking me to pick a name for myself now, since I will be attending classes in real life as well. At first, I thought maybe about just translating my english name into Vietnamese. However, I am a white American raised in Taiwan, so I also have a Chinese name. I think it is better if I use my Chinese name since it is easier to translate directly, rather than just having a viet-ified english name. If you translate my name from Chinese, my name becomes Thái Dĩ Tường. I think people would just call me Tường. Is this a weird name to have? Should I just go for my english name instead, or maybe just choose an entirely new vietnamese name?

Discussion/Thảo luận Internship Vietnam

My internship to Shanghai, China just got cancelled. Because it is only possible in a not very legal way with visa (because I’m from Europe). So I’m thinking about another country in asia. I don’t like places with too many tourists like Bali Indonesia. What about Ho chi Minh city or Hanoi. Can anyone tell me if you would recommend Vietnam for a marketing internship for 5 months? Please, any information is helpful and much appreciated. Thank you

Discussion/Thảo luận Why are so many dubs are in the southern accent?

Been on an anime binge (as per usual), and noticed that many dubs and/or voiceovers of many movies and series (not just animes) are in the southern accent; while so many voiceovers are in a northern accent? (I'm a Hanoi person)

Also dub definition: Alt track that removes the dialogue in the OG language and replace them with the localized dialogue. Voiceover: Alt track that simply spoke the translated dialogue over the OG dialogue (example: News voiceover of a foreigner's interview)

I see that many Vietnamese typically group dubs and voiceovers into one (aka: Lồng tiếng). It's not the same thing, and I'm just making that clear

Example of dubs: The World God Only Knows (POPS), Azumanga Daioh (HTV3), Doraemon, Conan, Journey to the West 1986 (HTV3 dub, not the more common VTV voiceovers), etc

Why is the southern accent so common in dubs/voiceovers?
