Hello, I'm 26 in the bay area, headed to the haight area. This guy's name is Modest-O, he was rescued from a pet store back in August, he's so far has been Mass, NY,PA, OH, IN, IL, MO, OK, NM, AZ, & CA, most of those were stops, he hid on the GreyHound from the driver's in his portable enclosure, people said hi to him, when the police had to remove a passenger in Harrisburg, the EMTs and officers held him and really enjoyed him, he likes running in the sand and in the grass, he doesn't go far. By far he's a great companion, he loves Kit Kats and tuna. He chewed his way out of his enclosure in NM, I was about to fall asleep when a passenger told me he walking out my bag, I fixed it so he doesn't run a stray. Over all he's doing well and staying hydrated and well fed .

As far as I know the city got lots of funding from Australian investors and now it has these huge parks and clean wide streets but it seems very eerie and liminal most of the time. But I enjoy hanging here there is wifi and outlets everywhere. It’s also the first time since I travelled the past 6 months where no one stares. It’s like everyone is a bot or something. The weather is also different sun goes up, a little cloudy, no wind, and then night again. If I stay for another week I might break some kind of simulation loop which will bring me in a higher consciousness.

Is probably one of the last sunny days out here, it's been interesting. Lost my water bottle in the seas and my cigarettes, no more smoking it is. Using a Sawyer bag for water drinking now.

So we made it back to where we started out a little over 2 yrs ago. Our old bass pond is still beautiful and we found our old stove steven hid away. Its a little rusty but still works. Ran into some old friends who got a dog since we've been gone. Pumpkin found a new friend in Buddy. Clifford is a little jealous. It s been interesting watching Clifford as we take him through his old puppy hood home. He remembers it. As we wonder around our old haunts we've come to release home is not home anymore. It will always be special, but home is somewhere else. Soon we will head out and leave this place and one day we'll discover a new home and make new memories. Safe travels yall.

Discussion In case you didn't know

Theres a new rule that you can't talk about certain train things. Its a rule that was implemented by one mod. He feels like its taboo even though he was in my Dm's asking the same questions he doesn't want you asking here.

Even though this post doesn't break any rules he will have it deleted.

I will continue to post this until I am banned.

Dm me any questions you have.

Day 47, Ride 121

(from earlier this year when I was hitchhiking through Kentucky)

I take a quick tour of Richmond, then walk west a few miles to reach the highway that leads to Irvine. Thirteen minutes pass and a dusty SUV pulls over.

The driver hops out, pulls out a knife, and starts sawing on a rope that runs through the vehicle and around the top.

“Sorry, I was hauling a mattress earlier.”

A black and mild hangs from his mouth. He gets rid of the rope and opens the back hatch. The vehicle is full of furniture and bags and tools. He darts back and forth from the back passenger door to the hatch to rearrange things so my backpack will fit.

”I do maintenance at an apartment complex—they throw out all kinds of stuff.”

We go to the front and get in.

Kevin. Late fifties. White hair. Tanned skin. Strong body odor. The black and mild smolders in a cup shaped ash tray.

We get on the road and he starts talking and doesn’t stop. Here are a few of the many things he is going to do once he has time:

move a woman down from Philly; start a tobacco / coffee store; get the correct permits from all the government agencies; clear off his land; buy a thousand acres from his neighbor; build a barn; move other woman down from Maine; fix the air conditioner; fix his RV; open a diner; find a couple rednecks to work for him; roast his own coffee and sell it at gas stations.

When I can get a word in, I ask him to drop me off in downtown Irvine so I can get another ride before dark, but he insists on taking me to his house on the far side of Ravenna so that if I decide to stay the night, I’ll know where to go. I’ve already decided against it. He mentioned something about having to get the A/C fixed because he feels bad leaving his dogs in his hot house all day. And if his house is anything like his car…I don’t want to sleep in a hot dumpster with a bunch of dogs. He’s a nice guy and I appreciate the ride, but that doesn’t mean I want to spend the night with him. I like my tent just fine.

We reach his property, which is overgrown with weeds, bushes, and kudzu. We roll the windows down and I can smell the house from the road. He parks at the head of an overgrown path to show me the RV he wants me to sleep in, but he says he’ll have to run an extension cord to the house so it’ll have electricity.

He drives me back to Irvine. I try to get out, saying again I’m hoping to get another ride since there’s a little daylight left, but he insists on taking me down a dead end street because he knows of a camping spot by the river. It’s the wrong road and we can’t reach the river. We go back to town and he’s still talking about finding the river spot. We come to a stop sign.

”This looks like a good spot.” I start to open the door. “I appreciate the ride.”

”Wait, let me take you up here, get you back on the main road.”

We drive through the town again and he’s still talking a mile a minute about all this random stuff that doesn’t mean a thing to me.

“Right there’s good.”

I point to a liquor store and consider reaching over and slamming the transmission into park if he doesn’t stop. He starts to say something about driving me somewhere else, but I cut him off.

”Pull in right there.”

”Okay.”

He stops. I thank him for the ride and get out. He’s still in the parking lot when I round a nearby corner.

The day is nearly done. By the time I reach a decent hitching spot on the edge of town, the sun is gone and dusk is on. I hold up my sign for Stanton, but nobody stops. I give up around nine and walk a few miles north.

I stop and sit on a rock wall and eat dinner: a granola bar and a few Slim Jim’s. I set off again, and after another mile or two, I cross a large field and find a semi-flat spot to set up camp. There’s a marshy pond nearby, and it stinks. My head is wet with sweat and the mosquitos swarm me like gnats on rotting fruit.

Inside the tent, I’m safe from the bugs, but not the swampy stench. After a while I grow accustomed to the smell and drift off to sleep.

What now?

I feel like I've kind of just hit the end of places I want to go and see, and now I don't really know what I'm doing. With winter approaching, I'm desperate to go south, but I don't know where to. I feel like everywhere's the same, and I don't want to go back to my usual winter spots. I know I haven't been everywhere and there's got to be somewhere that'll work out for me-- anyone got any suggestions for places to go for the winter in the southwest? I like art and busk for money.

Signed, a rubber tramp with a cat

hi all! I (30F) would like to get in touch with Dutch or Flemish vagabonds. This lifestyle doesn't seem to be that popular in Western Europe, but maybe I'm looking in the wrong places? love to hear from you! XO

CCG PSA

Just thought I'd post a PSA for aspiring train hoppers out there because some people have some misconceptions about using a crew change while hopping.

Laws regarding rails is managed and enforced by federal agents.

Riding freight trains IS a felony charge.

If you get caught with a ccg on railroad property it can be used by the law to charge you with a crime.

Riding freight trains is NOT for chasing a high, accumulating internet clout, running from the law, or practicing illegal activities such as crossing borders or trafficking illegal goods. The feds are actively hunting those who do so. They follow those peoples internet feeds, set up (rail)road blocks and traps to catch these people.
