Hi, I’m currently an international student studying at a university in the US (ranked around 500th in the QS World University Rankings). I have been worrying about whether I should transfer to another university(outside of US), given the ongoing government backlash and uncertainty surrounding work visas — such as the recent news that fees for international student internships, the CTP work visa and OPT could amount to around 75000 usd.
As I would like to find employment in that country after graduation, I am currently looking into transferring to a university in Canada, where a post-graduation work visa is available for up to three years. I am currently studying for a degree in Fine Arts (majoring in film) with a minor in Information Systems, and I have completed two internships as a growth marketer. Consequently, I would like to pursue a career in data-driven marketing in the future. It would be ideal to work for a content-focused company or a tech firm. Therefore, if I transfer to Ivey, I intend to change my programme of study.
However, I do have some concerns.
I’ve heard that the job market in Canada is also in a very poor state. Given that my English isn’t perfect and I have no local experience in Canada, will I really be a competitive candidate there?
If my value as a graduate is similar whether I graduate from Ivey or from my current university, then — as I have many friends here and find it easier to settle in and get on with life — I think it would be better for me to continue studying at my current university… The university I’m currently attending has a branch campus in my home country, so I’m a little worried that in five to ten years’ time, there will be so many people in my country holding degrees from American universities that graduating from this particular institution might lose some of its exclusivity here.
Thank you for reading long post! I’d welcome any thoughtful replies. Thank you in advance!!!
