📖 Resources Electives/Broadening Units: Important Links, FAQ, & Discussion

Hey there r/UWA!

Posts about easy elective units or advice on specific units are very common here, so in an effort to reduce repetitive posts, this will function as a unit megathread with:

  1. links to useful resources,
  2. an FAQ, and
  3. a place for discussion, where users can ask and answer more specific questions.

If you have a problem or question related to electives units, PLEASE CHECK the links, FAQ, and discussion below FIRST. If you're still stuck, PLEASE COMMENT your question below and before creating a new post. This will help us reduce clutter - thank you in advance!

This post will stay pinned and may be edited in the future. Suggestions for additions to the links and/or FAQ can be left in the comments also.

Links 🔗

OFFICIAL RESOURCES:

  1. UWA Handbook - the most important resource regarding courses and enrolment, contains almost ALL the information you may need.
    • (To view handbooks from previous years, head to the archived handbooks. It's important that you follow the rules outlined in the handbook from the year in which you enrolled!)
  2. askUWA - where your important questions may be answered; there's an FAQ and a place to email your questions to UWA officials.
  3. Elective choices (from the handbook) - a list of the recommended elective units.
    • (Note: this is not ALL the possible elective choices, just official recommendations.)

UNOFFICIAL RESOURCES:

  1. Best Units Guide - this list compiled by the UWA Student Guild, with contributions from actual students, describes and ranks many elective units. A VERY useful resource if you need some ideas on good electives!
  2. StudentVIP subject reviews - this site has many features, but this specific part lists MANY units at UWA with reviews and an average score. Reviewers aren't screened for authenticity - but still another VERY useful resource for both choosing electives & preparing for core units.

FAQ ❔

What are some easy electives/GPA boosters/etc.?

Resources linked above, particularly the Best Units Guide & StudentVIP subject reviews, will likely contain the answer to this question. Be sure to check those out for student's opinions on elective units!

However, "easy" is subjective - what's easy for you may be difficult for someone else, which is why it's important to consider what you generally struggle with and what you're actually looking for. Are you looking for a unit with low time commitment? One with no exam? One with few assignments?

Thoughts on ____ unit?

Please try not to create these kinds of posts regarding opinions on specific units. Instead, please look for existing comments below or leave your own - that's why we made this post after all!

Please leave any remaining questions or specific queries below in the comments, or answer other people's questions if you can.

📢 Mod Announcement PSA: Beware of Cults

IMPORTANT TO READ FOR NEW INTL STUDENTS

EDIT: Some comments have informed me that these cult recruiters have been seen on campus. If you encounter one and have a similar experience as below - please notify campus security.

They target international students mainly - but I need to write as I’ve been approached twice in the last week alone.

If you’re in the CBD, mall, etc, and you get approached by two strangers, usually 1 female and 1 male, if they invite you to an “event” - they are cult recruiters.

They usually start off the conversation by complimenting you (where did you get …, I like your …). It always ends with them inviting you to an event.

Once you hear “event”, just step away from the convo with an excuse. Better safe than sorry.

Serious PSA: Please stop sitting exams when you're sick

I understand that no one wants to deal with deferring. But this week I've sat through multiple exams around people who couldn't go without coughing every 10 seconds or sneezing, for the full 2 hours. Yes, people do notice you and are getting distracted, and yes you can get them sick too by being next to them for 2 hours.

EVAs exist for a reason, and you'll probably do better when you're not completely sick anyways.

If you really have to come in, at least wear a mask, or cough into your elbow.

This motorbike outside the tavern has metal stuck in its tyre, I've left a note on the seat. Stay safe :)

Accidentally wrote on question book instead of answer sheet

Just had an exam and I accidentally wrote my answers in the question book instead of the answer book.
Am I cooked? Does anyone have a similar experience?

📚 Units/Courses LAWS2200 exam

I think it was a very reasonable exam, what did you guys think? I reckon I was well prepared enough with the great material and tutes that I could understand most of the concepts before going through my revised outlines ... if you see this Aiden, thank you for the unit, it was my favourite one this semester and I encourage anyone to do it next year!

Serious Re-enrolments for 2027 open on November 2nd

Just a PSA because it's currently not publicly available (the enrolments page hasn't been updated and askUWA FAQs just direct there):

A peer contacted askUWA and let me know that re-enrolment opens on the 2nd of November.

For everyone look to enrol in the upcoming Summer School or just for 2027, this is the date you can do that from. This is by no means an indicator that you have to rush and get it done on the day, you have plenty of time (though less if you're keen on Summer School), I just know myself and others were wondering about it so just making a quick post to let y'all know.

Good luck to everyone currently being crushed by exams, drink some water.

Serious Urgent notice for UWA Perth students: Avoidable issue / critical update regarding [Human Movement Lab] for finals

We pay thousands of dollars for each unit (especially more as international students) but yet the uni doesn’t seem concerned enough to keep a working clock in the exam hall. Mine was stuck at 2:45 for two hours and the venue was too big to see the other ones. Does anyone know how to handle this? We aren’t allowed to wear digital watches either and this is a huge problem that keeps happening. MKTG2238 exam is when this happened

Price gouging at campus IGA

When are we going to stop normalising the cruel price gouging at campus IGA, praying on time- and money- poor students.

Everyone please join me in a collective boycott. I understand independent supermarkets like IGA are inherently more expensive than the duopoly but the even the majority of items at Broadway IGA are cheaper and have more frequent specials whereas campus IGA is airport-level expensive everyday even though I assume (feel free to lmk if im wrong) the campus IGA would have lower running costs/ be subsidised by the uni.

MATH1011 Exam

I am genuinely concerned for the person who wrote the MATH1011 exam today. Genuinely concerned. Completely prepped to ace the exam, know the format, how to answer the questions, and everything. Then they hit you with the biggest curveball known to mankind.

The exam wasn’t anything like how they formatted it within the last 4-5 years. No questions from the previous exam were present at all in this recent exam, and the amount of content that was supposed to be there was scrapped to be only using the last few weeks of content is absolutely insane. God dammit this unit.

Serious Can high school students use level 2/3 reid

I have seen dozens of high school students level 3 reid today. Before I complain to PAM, are they allowed on these levels during staffed hours? I am aware they can't be after hours what about normal hours. I couldn't see much online.

The fact we pay to use these libraries and they can waltz in whenever they want bothers me and there is so many of them!

Serious Is there any support services I can get before my next exam

Hello, I was recently diagnosed with ADHD but it was fairly recent and I haven’t had the chance to apply for exam support. I was hoping it would be okay but I’m floundering, I can’t focus at all in the exams and I’ve just more than likely failed the same unit twice. I’m miserable and I don’t know how on earth I am going to be able to pass my last exams like this.

Is there any services available for me, or do I just need to live with the fact that I’m going to have to redo a semester.

Signals and systems exam

How did people find the signals and systems exam, after doing a million past exams I instantly went from feeling alright to so unprepared for the actual one when I was in there. It was nothing like the past ones so pretty sure I’m fucked.

Also what is the point in having a bunch of tiny 3 mark questions and then 4 fucked ones containing 70% of the marks.

Amit Chakma left Canada under very acrimonious circumstances and still has a quite poor reputation for his 'double-dipping' scandal. Many people don't seem to know

Surprised many people do not know how Chakma left Canada.

Would you support a Vote of No Confidence against Amir Chakma, similar to what occurred at UTS recently?

For reference: https://www.nteu.au/News_Articles/Media_Releases/no_confidence_vote_UTS.aspx

I am considering writing to NTEU and formally raising the concerns regarding Amit Chakma and what I believe to be huge decline since he has taken over.

There is precedent for a University-wide voting mechanism to determine confidence in continued leadership (see link to UTS vote).

I believe UWA is not even close to its former self. I also think that UWA's reputation is being continually harmed under Amit Chakma's leadership and that continued decline is inevitable.

I think enough is enough. Under Amit Chakma there is not one aspect of the University I think is even at its previous level, let alone improved. Students and Staff have the power to make voices heard and this mechanism may finally indicate just how little confidence remains in Mr Chakma leading UWA to any of its former glory.

Not only UWA, but Western Australia deserves proper educational leadership and I cannot see any evidence of this at UWA.

Please vote.
