Event 2026 U.S. Midterm Voting Guide for College Students!

Hey r/uofm!

Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, 2026! Here's what college students need to know to make a plan to vote.

Quick reminders:

  • Away at school? Make sure you know which address you're registered at.
  • Voting absentee? Check your deadline and return your ballot as soon as possible!

1. Make Sure You're Registered

Moved dorms or apartments? Double-check your registration address. Some states still allow registration or updates during early voting or on Election Day!

Turning 18 by November 3? You may be eligible to vote if you're a U.S. citizen and meet your state's other requirements.

2. Home Address or School Address?

  • Living away from home? You may be eligible to vote using either your home or college address, depending on state residency rules. You can only vote once!
  • Registered at school: Find your local polling place and check early-voting options.
  • Registered back home: You may be able to vote absentee without traveling home. If your requested ballot hasn't arrived, contact your home election office today!
  • Studying abroad? FVAP.gov has voting instructions and information about emergency backup ballots for eligible overseas voters.

3. Pick How You'll Vote

Early, in person: Early voting is already open in many states but ends before Election Day in some places. Check your dates and locations!

NASS – Early & Absentee Voting by State

By mail: USA.gov – Absentee & Mail Voting

  • Follow the instructions and sign where required.
  • Return your ballot early! USPS recommends mailing at least one week before your ballot must be received. Running short on time? Check whether official drop boxes or in-person return options are available.
  • Many states let you track your ballot online.

On Election Day: Tuesday, November 3! Polling hours vary by state, so check before you go.

4. Know Before You Go

5. Good to Know at the Polls

  • In line when polls close? Stay in line! If you're already in line, you can still vote.
  • Name not on the list? Ask a poll worker about a provisional ballot or other options in your state.
  • Need assistance? Voters with disabilities have the right to accessible voting and can request help.

6. Questions?

Contact your state or local election office, or the nonpartisan Election Protection Hotline:

  • English: 866-OUR-VOTE (866-687-8683)
  • Español: 888-VE-Y-VOTA (888-839-8682)
  • Asian languages: 888-API-VOTE (888-274-8683)
  • Arabic: 844-YALLA-US (844-925-5287)

Your vote is your voice! Make a plan, share this guide with a friend, and see you at the polls!

Academics - Other Topics considering withdrawing from a business minor course. how bad would a W look for medical school?

for context, i’m a junior with a high gpa and no previous withdrawals. I’m currently taking a ross minor course for a business minor and did poorly on the midterm, so I’m considering withdrawing.
I’m worried that staying in the class could significantly hurt my GPA, but I’m also concerned about how a W would look to medical schools, especially more competitive ones.
Would taking a W in a non-science course be better than potentially getting a B-/C+? How much does a single W actually matter for med school admissions?

Degree School of Information

Is this Umich school of info that bad. I’ve heard a lot of negative things about it on this subreddit that their employment numbers are fake or that the curriculum is a joke and talking about how it’s a lot of people too dumb for CS. I was considering transferring into the school my sophomore year as it interests me but I was looking to learn more if it truly was that bad and could I realistically get good employment or a job with an info degree or am I better off looking elsewhere where. As a note I’m not big into computer science or like software engineering so that was never a real consideration for me. Just looking for any advice. Thank you!

Employment Pre-Calc tutor for high school student

I have a 9th grader in pre-calc that has started to fall behind a bit, and I'm looking for somebody that can meet him in-person to provide tutoring. We're happy to bring him on campus to meet at one of the libraries. Let me know if you're interested.

Class My entire UMSI course is AI generated slop. Including exams and grading.

I am currently taking a CS course in UMSI and am loosing my mind. My professor openly brags the entire course is AI generated, including exams, homework, and grading.

It would be one thing if AI was used to polish or enhance course materials, but this is a whole different situation. Half the course content reads like it was published to Canvas without ever being reviewed. It has the same monotonic LLM cliches over and over, and if I have to read 'quietly' or 'delve into a rich tapestry' in an assignment one more time, I’m going to explode. When students ask for clarification in office hours, it feels like the teaching team is discovering the assignment alongside us. Some of my classmates have been told to figure it out with Co-Pilot, because we "have to learn to use AI anyways."

If I wanted to learn from a chatbot, I wouldn't have moved across the country to Ann Arbor to pay $1300 a month in rent and thousands in tuition for a course. If I dared use AI to complete an entire assignment I'd be flagged with honor code violations and dragged through weeks of disciplinary procedures with the Dean. But when a professor dumps raw garbage from ChatGPT onto hundreds of students, they get to praise themselves for forward-looking pedagogy while the department looks the other way, and student data is fed directly into commercial AI tools so they can learn to automate our careers.

What are we even paying for at this point? Accreditation for a degree where professors don't bother to write the exams, or grade work anymore?

Absolute f*cking joke.

Academics - Other Topics Difficulty of cs at umich vs other top insitutions?

I have heard from alot of my friends at other top unis like uiuc, gtech, or cornell etc how they data strucure classes do not require heavy leet code style exams even though the projects go much in detail. Also a uiuc transfer I met who said their cs classes was much easier. Is that true or what makes our cs classes much harder compared to other higher ranked insitutions?

Class 3rd-year biochem student schedule questions (I'm pulling my hair out)

In winter 2027, I plan to take:

- CHEM 351 (Fundamentals of Biochemistry) (4)

- CHEM 262 (Mathematical Methods for Physical Scientists) (4)

- CHEM 261 (Quantum Chemistry; p-chem equivalent) (1)

- ASIANLAN 216 (4th-term language requirement) (4)

- BIOLCHEM 398 (Undergrad research in biochem) (2)

Do we think this schedule is manageable if I am also working a 15hr/week job? I've heard CHEM 351 is a beast and that you need to set time aside for that course. CHEM 262 is Calc 3 equivalent but much easier. Does anyone have any advice for these two courses?

I feel like my other courses are pretty chill and might take a couple of hours a day here and there, but I am truly scared for 351 and 262. Any advice would be appreciated!

Also if anyone is taking these classes next semester hmu so we can make a study group :)

Academics - Other Topics Is Calculus Now Needed for Physics 250?

Hello,

I was under the impression that calculus was not needed for the "pre-med" Physics here, but looking at the course guides for the spring semester Physics 250, I see that it says that knowledge of integral and differential calculus is needed for the course.

Can anyone who has taken Physics 250 in the past give their take on this?

Thank you!

Academics - Other Topics easy eecs ulcs for last semester

im taking 482 and am terrified lmao so i want an easy class to pair with it. im looking at eecs 486, 484, 483, and 493. i've already taken 485 and don't want to take 481 which i know is what many people suggest. i'm probably most interested in 493 because i have very little experience with ui/ux, but have heard the class has gotten harder. any thoughts on any of these classes?

Academics - Other Topics Financial aid help

Hi all! I was recently admitted to UMICH as a transfer for the winter 2027 semester (woooo!) I just would like some clarification regarding my estimated financial aid rewards. Both my FAFSA and CSS profile have been retrieved by the financial aid office but I’m just wondering if I can call them, let’s say tomorrow, and see if they’ll already have an answer for me. I’m kind of psyching myself out due to this and would like an answer as soon as possible to put myself at ease. Any thoughts?
