Defender was two miles away on that call

She was literally standing still before the throw was even made WAITING for the chance to call a pick.

Not a pick at all

There's no way she could have influenced that play, she was 20 yards from the receiver. Honestly bad call and abusing pick to redo throws.

The defender that was a mile away did not get picked. The one that was close to their mark did get picked. The disc should stay.

A pick occurs when you can't follow a player you're guarding, and the definition of guarding is "3.D. Guarding: A defender is guarding an offensive player when they are within 10 feet of that offensive player and are reacting to that offensive player." During the obstruction, the defender is not within 10 feet of their player, so it's not a pick. It's not "technically a pick but shouldn't be called because it didn't affect the play", it's not a pick.

I agree. I mean, language being what it is, some will say “pick” to mean “the extent of obstruction is such that you could call pick if you were close enough,” and then say “but that doesn’t matter because you weren’t close enough.” But that’s just semantics. Bottom line, the D who was way more than 10’ from the receiver at the time the paths crossed had no valid pick call. IMO.

It's unclear to me if #7 or #73 called pick. If #73 called pick then it’s clear cut. She wasn't guarding anyone, she cannot call a pick. Being more than 10ft away while reacting is not legally guarding someone.

If #7 called a pick, it's uninvolved regardless, but I don't even think it's a pick. The obstruction is caused by #73 who is not having to quickly react to an offensive player she's guarding because her assignment is 30ft away. She has all the time in the world to avoid obstructing her own teammate. Nothing anyone on the white time does creates that obstruction, so under USAU rules I don't think it's a pick because an offensive player's movement didn't cause the obstruction.

Either way, sending the disc back is incorrect.

Not even close. Just like the defender.

THIS defender does get picked:

That has nothing to do with the throw that was completed and it does not appear that they are the one who actually called the pick.

The person who called the pick is 100% wrong.

Even if you are being very generous and saying she was within 10 feet. Why did disc go back? There is no way she could possibly argue she had a play on a breakside throw like that.

Not within range to call pick. Stupid call to send the disc back.

Not only is it an error by calling it a pick, it's also an error in outcome, as even if this were a pick (it's not) the disc should not go back because the defender had no play on it.

Defender in dark was in another zip code and still called that a travel? Yikes.

Yes pick, but disc stays where it was. Just because you heard "pick" doesn't mean you get to stop playing (in USAU)

The picked player definitely can stop playing, but it wasn't a pick since they weren't close enough to the person they were guarding when the obstruction happened.

I thought the person calling pick was defending the cutter cutting right. I thought the person sending it back (who was too far away) was just echoing the call.

A pick is more than an obstruction.

19.A. A pick occurs whenever an offensive player moves in a manner that causes a defensive player guarding (3.D) an offensive player to be obstructed by another player.

An element of a pick is the obstructed player had to have been guarding an offensive player at the time the obstruction occurred.

3.D. Guarding: A defender is guarding an offensive player when they are within 10 feet of that offensive player and are reacting to that offensive player.

Black#73 is reacting to white#53, but she appears to be around 30ft away if not more at the time of the obstruction, therefore she is not legally guarding anyone. She cannot call a pick.

My mistake. I thought the rightward-moving defender was calling pick and 73 was just echoing.

Even still, because #73 is so far away from her assignment, there’s nothing that the team in white is doing to cause #73 to obstruct. So I don't even think that's a pick.

This defender probably had a legitimate pick call, the white receiver does run her into the standing still poaching defender, which is a pick.

But, it appears the other defender called the pick.
