on the foundations of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, this release continues to
advance security, performance, and hardware support while introducing
new capabilities that look towards the future of Ubuntu. As always, these
improvements are the result of close collaboration between the Ubuntu
team, our community, and our partners. A huge thank you to all who
contributed.

Ubuntu 26.10 brings significant progress for security, and strengthens
the platform with the full adoption of Rust-based coreutils,
post-quantum-ready package signing, and expanded TPM-backed full-disk
encryption support. Enterprise authentication gains deeper integration
with Microsoft Entra ID, including password and multi-factor

alongside new RISC-V desktop images and optimized amd64v3 installation
images.

On the desktop, GNOME 51 brings improvements to responsiveness,
accessibility, and usability, complemented by more consistent software
management and greater resilience under memory pressure. Ubuntu 26.10 also
introduces Myna, an opt-in, locally processed speech-to-text solution that
marks the first step towards a more natural, context-aware desktop
experience. With updated developer toolchains and expanded support for
accelerated AI workloads, Ubuntu 26.10 continues to evolve Ubuntu as a
secure, capable, and forward-looking open source platform.

wacom tablet no longer working

i'm currently on 26.04, and up until like a week ago i could draw on csp through bottles. then i upgraded, and now when i open csp my tablet (a very old wacom intuos) moves the cursor but can't interact with anything unless i click with my actual trackpad. the cursor also doubles when i move my pen; one following the pen and another one that stays where i last left the trackpad one. also tried using krita but same problem.

the tablet works fine in every other app and i'm pretty sure this isn't a driver problem because i can draw in photopea just fine.

i've changed settings in csp to "use mouse mode in tablet driver settings" and reinstalled ubuntu but it still doesn't work

should i just dual boot at this point

Porque la gestion energetica suele ser deficiente en ubuntu?

Ubuntu tends to prioritize conservative power management configurations, often maintaining ASPM and P-State policies that are not geared toward energy savings ostensibly to maximize compatibility and avoid stability issues. However, this strategy can result in inefficient dynamic management: in certain scenarios, the CPU maintains unnecessarily high frequencies and performance levels during light desktop tasks, failing to properly leverage available EPP (Energy Performance Preference) settings. This forces users to manually modify profiles and parameters that should have been reasonably configured from the initial installation. Another weak point is the `s2idle` sleep state, where Ubuntu can exhibit high power consumption even with the laptop lid closed. While firmware and drivers may contribute to this issue, the way the operating system coordinates the freezing of user-space processes, the suspension of devices, and the transition of the platform into low-power states also plays a critical role. In any case, it is fair to question why Ubuntu consistently fails to deliver competitive power management right out of the box especially given the resources and experience at Canonical’s disposal. If other distributions can achieve better battery life using default settings without requiring manual tweaks then Ubuntu should invest more effort into optimizing its power policies, validating `s2idle` behavior, and ensuring that devices reach the appropriate sleep states, rather than shifting the burden of fixing these shortcomings onto the user. And the worst part is that there are already community solutions that should have been included in Ubuntu from the start, since it's a distribution for beginners, the TLP should already be configured. It is clear that, despite using generic profiles, they have failed to follow even the most fundamental principles of power management.

Acer Nitro Lite 16 on Ubuntu: low CPU clocks (400 MHZ) and low FPS until unplugging/replugging the charger during the game

Hi! I’m trying to diagnose a repeatable performance problem on my Acer laptop running Ubuntu. It affects mostly my gaming performance (CPU clocks at 400 MHZ which leads to high CPU usage and low FPS).

Hardware and software details:

  • Laptop: Acer Nitro Lite 16, NL16-71G
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-13420H - 4 P-cores + 4 E-cores, 12 threads
  • GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3050 Laptop GPU, 6 GB, plus Intel integrated graphics
  • RAM: 16 GB
  • Display: 1920 × 1200, 165 Hz
  • BIOS: V1.19
  • OS: Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS
  • Kernel: 7.0.0-38-generic
  • Desktop: Sway 1.11 / Wayland
  • NVIDIA driver: 595.99.02
  • Power profile: performance, confirmed with powerprofilesctl get
  • Game: Warcraft III: Reforged through Lutris

How to reproduce

  1. Reboot with the charger connected.
  2. Launch Lutris and Warcraft III: Reforged.
  3. The game runs at approximately 160 FPS, and Firefox/the desktop also becomes noticeably sluggish. CPU load is around 60-70% although the game is very lightweight.
  4. Unplug the charger briefly while the game is running for about ~5-6 seconds, then reconnect it.
  5. FPS jumps to approximately 300–330, and desktop responsiveness improves, also CPU load lowers to 15-20%. The improvement remains after reconnecting AC power.

I can get 300 FPS even with running on battery, before I reconnected the charger again.

Unplugging/replugging on the desktop before launching the game itself did not fix it in one test. Only when game is launched and I'm getting 160 FPS at 400-1000 MHZ - I replug the charger and plug in it again, and CPU MHZ increases to around ~2500-3800 and FPS increases to 300+, also CPU load decreases to only 15-20%.

Measurements:

In the slow state, CPU readings are often around 1.1–2.0 GHz, with roughly 50–60% overall CPU usage. In the responsive state, usage has been around 15–20%.

Earlier checks showed CPU clocks around 3–3.6 GHz after reconnecting power. However, some later /proc/cpuinfo snapshots also showed lower clocks in the fast state, so I haven’t established that CPU frequency alone explains the problem.

One pair of measurements, collected while the game was in the foreground:

Reading Before reconnecting After reconnecting
FPS ~160 ~330
CPU package temperature 77°C 77°C
NVIDIA GPU temperature 69°C 70°C
NVIDIA GPU utilization 32% 62%
NVIDIA GPU power draw 20 W 22 W
NVIDIA GPU power limit 49 W 50 W

scaling_max_freq remained unchanged in both states:

  • P-core policies: 4600000 kHz
  • E-core policies: 3400000 kHz

What I have checked

  • The game appears on the RTX 3050 in nvidia-smi.
  • nvidia-powerd is installed and normally running. Temporarily stopping it and starting it again did not improve FPS withouht unplugging the charger.
  • The power profile remains performance before and after reconnecting.
  • The issue occurs after a reboot without needing a suspend/resume cycle.
  • In one test, suspending and resuming after restoring performance did not bring the slowdown back.

Has anyone experienced this on Acer gaming laptops, or on another Intel/NVIDIA laptop under Linux?

What would be the most useful logs or measurements to distinguish a firmware power-limit issue from Linux power management or charger detection? I’d prefer to establish the cause before changing firmware or disabling any protection mechanisms.

P.s. On Windows I don't have a FPS issue, so it's not a mechanical/physical defect of the charger or laptop.

P.s.s. I don't know, if I can fix this issue, but at least I want to understand, why this issue happening at all.

Appreciate any help!

solved Where can I download 24.04 LTS?

Hey, I need to set up a VM for 24.04 LTS to access my college's Citrix environment.

Citrix currently does not support 26.04 LTS and when I go into overview mode it tricks my Citrix session into thinking my super key is held down, and that will even follow me to other devices if I don't end the session so I need 24.04 but can't find the download. Everything I google looks like a pirate website so idk... If someone can please provide a safe link that would be much appreciated!!

Gear Icons instead of App Icons

I'm on Ubuntu 24.04.5 LTS

Currently when I click on Steam, App Store, and Brave, it shows up not at the pinned icon in the dashboard, but as a gray gear icon below my pinned applications. Why is this happening and what's the fix for it?

Huion pen tablet no longer working

Helloo, I recently upgraded my Ubuntu version and after this, my Huion tablet no longer recognizes clicks. I can no longer close out tabs, draw, or any action that involves putting pen to tablet. I've re-installed my drivers, but no dice.. tablet worked fine on the previous version, though. Should I just roll back my version?

Ubuntu Dock Regression

I installed ubuntu 26.10 despite it being non-LTS. an issue i noticed was Ubuntu Dock (also dash to dock) with multi monitor. I keep my dash at the bottom with autohide enabled. it works just as expected in the primary monitor, but in the secondary monitor the dock behaves weird when i try to see it by moving the mouse to the bottom edge. it shows up but instantly autohides, again when i move the pointer away from the bottom, it similarly unhides for a moment and then autohides. i noticed same issue in gnome 51 in other distros. i myself tried out dash to dock extension in Fedora and CachyOS. so it is mostly an extension compatibility issue. hope when Ubuntu 28 ships with gnome 51, this small thing gets fixed.

UML is a program that runs a full Linux kernel as just another process. It works on Android without root access and also allows for running SystemD and Docker. Making it useful for those who do not have root access or a custom kernel.

So, I'm considering updating to the latest LTS. It's been almost a month since the upgrade path opened up. Should I wait a bit longer for general issues to be fixed, if there are any?

I've attached a list of the containers I'm running. Anyone with a similar build, apps, or containers is welcome to share their experience!
