General Question Olympia SM9 - Elite No. 87?
Picture of my SM9 from 1968 in my writing corner. Is this typeface "Elite No. 87" (12 cpi)? How can I find out?

Hi all,
Due to various issues, the Typewriter Discord Server is replacing their longstanding invite link. You can now join using: This link
As always, join if you want another option for chatting about typewriters in general, for asking about repairs, or to just show off your new machine!
Thank you all for being part of this community.
The typewriters wiki is still around at typewriter.wiki.

I thought my last typewriter would be the Noiseless 7, but I've been casually eyeing this smaller Brother typewriter for some time and thought how handy it would be to have a sturdy, smaller typewriter to bring around. Eventually, I couldn't resist a good deal and the opportunity to get a much smaller typewriter so I reasoned that it was small enough to stash in my office and that it wouldn't take up too much space. So, here I am feeling a little silly that I wouldn't get to this point, but here I am on my fifth one. Welp.

Got a sm4 with "congress" typeface, very pleased...ribbon that came with it is a bit dry

As the title says, I finally got a chance at one. In the process of cleaning I noticed the vibrator being slightly left of center line, will this affect normal operation? If so how would I go about centering it more midline or is it a non-issue? Thank you to the experts!
Also bonus question, anything I should know about this particular model, tips or quirks?

Scored this one tonight from FB Marketplace for $100. Couldn't believe it when I saw it. The pickup was a 1.5 hour drive for me, but worth it. Kudos to the seller for keeping to her posted price and our deal. She showed me messages she got from some jerk who kept offering her more money for it after she marked it as pending. He went up to $400.
It's dirty, but intact. There's an issue where the carriage won't advance past the midpoint unless you hit shift first to raise the carriage. I suspect there's something stuck in there. I can feel it grinding a little bit.
The serial# dates it about midway through 1959 production. It only has a 2-way ribbon selector switch due to the elongated script typeface. It has the original metal spools and the curvy-style case, which is harder to find for SM4 models. The original manual is here, but it's seen better days. Also found another treat inside the case...a newspaper page from 1970.

Genuinely curious, cause I mean... this subreddit is a pretty global site no? Im from singapore and the prices for generic 70s to 90s japanese machines is in the hundreds of dollars. Cheapest machine here is maybe the desktops at 50 - 80 bucks and even then thats like 40 dollars for like an adler 280 or a olympia sg3 thats not even working...
Typewriter jnflation hitting you guys the same? Or is it just my highly inflated city...

Picked up this Smith Corona Super G because I love the color and think it looks cool. Problem was it was pretty gross and non-functional. As a fun project I took it apart, cleaned and fixed all the issues. Needed to replace some tiny springs and bend two parts back into place. Also plastic is much harder to clean without destroying than metal! Last photo is how far I had to go. Just short of needed to take the keys, levers and springs out.
It types great now. It's a little heavy on the strokes but thankfully has a nice mechanical and satisfying sound despite the plastic body!

Don't get me wrong, I'm still absolutely loving the SM9, but I got it in pretty beat up shape and it needed a good cleaning and probably some adjustments. The letter spacing can get a bit inconsistent when I'm typing on the faster side and sometimes the space bar isn't super responsive. Sometimes the letters will overlap quite a bit.
Some of this may be user error because I start typing very quickly and perhaps my rhythm has something to do with it. Plus, my writing table is a guitar case on a keyboard stand, so it's not incredibly stable (in second photo). So, if these may be contributing, I wouldn't be surprised, however, if this is something that needs adjusting, how difficult and in depth might it be?

I finally got it! My first typewriter and it is this magnificent Imperial Good Companion Model T!!! Unfortunately it didn't recieve any love for whay feels like decades. Person I bought it from said his father liked to collect British goods, it's in Ukraine right now and to find machine like this with English keyboard is a gem, also for reasonable price of 80$. But it did came with few surprises like half of the keys were stuck because of the gunk build up where they rest. And I only then realized that carriage release lever spring has degraded and doesn't work basically and while typing it moves from vibration and releasing the carriage. I fixed it for now by just placing a rubberband on the lever to hold it back. Otherwise it works perfectly, so I ask your advice how should I clean it properly and some dos and don'ts
Thank you in advance.

So, after a bit of clean up, I discovered this poor machine has a pretty badly cracked main cycle hub. I debated for a few days just scrapping the project (and the machine) entirely, but have decided to move forward with repairs.
I have ordered new tilt and rotate tapes, a new belt, and once I get the main hub out (easier said than done but that's what YouTube is for), I will be shipping it off for repair/remanufacture.
The hiccups I will face next are determining what a loose screw and a loose spring I found in the case belong to.
Also apparently I decided to dedicate my entire life to Selectrics, as I purchased two "donor" machines, for a grand total of $40 on Facebook Marketplace, a Correcting Selectric II and a Correcting Selectric III (pretty sure III's were all correcting, but I digress). Welp, those machines also had badly cracked main hubs, and one had a few broken keycaps, but they're otherwise in good shape, so I've decided to fix them up too, if possible.
So, repair question for y'all out there: aside from remanufacturing options, anyone know where to source replacement main cycle hubs? It would be cool to just drop em in instead of needing to wait on getting it shipped back.

No?
Alguna otra persona le pasa lo mismo?
Alguna recomendación?
Y por otro lado: le puso una cinta entintada nueva. Aproximadamente cuanto dura?

Good Afternoon!
I am sure that has been posted a few times before, but what is the best way to get into a typewriter?
Right now I don't even know what questions to ask HA. I would love to get something that I can enjoy for years to come, maybe pass onto my children down the line. Doesn't need to be super portable, but would be nice to have a case that I can put it away if needed. I have been lurking for a few weeks but thought I would ask some formal questions.
How did you get into typewriters? Just go out and buy one? Thrift store, one of the other myriad other locations online? I won't link to the one I found, but there was a refurbished bright yellow Olympia I was vibing with, but unsure if I would even like it?
Thanks!

How lucky are we all, able to buy the typewriter equivalents of Mercedes, Porsche, Bentley and Rolls Royce for less than €$50? When you think how much people/companies paid for these beautiful machines a few decades past, we are blessed to benefit from that inheritance now.
Here is my question, though: with endless affordable choice, how did you know when you encountered your perfect typewriter, your grail machine? What stopped you moving on to see if there was something better out there? Too much choice can be worse than too little.
I'm still hunting, but think I may have found my grail in a 1958 Torpedo. What was it for you that stopped you in your tracks? The touch, the look, the typeface?
I'm really curious for your memories. For the sake of us all, please try to avoid the tires adjectives "buttery" and "snappy"...

Hey all!
This was originally listed as $125, new ribbon and with case. Is this a fair price? I am looking to get my first typewriter.

Hey folks so I am a newbie, and I recently got a studio 46 but it has a lot of problems and I am not sure if they are age problems or if I just don't know how to use them.
First of all the keys just don't strike they stop a couple of centimeters from the page. Second, the carriage won't stop moving to the left it stops when I type but goes right back to it. Third the tension lever seems to be stuck down but the tension is super high.
Any answers are super appreciated.

I just got this Olympia SM4. The typeface seems tiny, smaller than elite. Online I find that Olympia had a 17 CPI typeface called Diamond. Do you think that's what this is? (It's not to my taste. I feel like I'm typing footnotes.)

I purchased this Remington Portable today and am hoping somebody can help me identify it.
It is consistent with the Portable Model 2 in all ways except for having a red tab key, which was not typical of Model 2s.
At first I believed it to be a Butler Brothers edition, which took the Model 2 and introduced the tab in around 1932-1933, but the serial number would have started with BB.
The serial number is V156252 which may put it at around March of 1929 according to the serial number database.
I am unable to find information online that agrees, but is it likely to be a 1929 Model 2 with an uncommon extra tab key?

Little a goes under line. Big A looks horrible, doesn't ink as well as other letters.
