Elementary Schools
I live in a weird little section of the triangle with a Raleigh address but in the county of Durham. It looks like they drew the county lines around my neighborhood. We have young children and are thinking about elementary school. The market isn’t ideal for moving right now into wake county but we would like our children to attend wake county schools as we are significantly closer to the nearby elementary school in wake county (2 miles and on the way to work) than the one we’d be assigned to in Durham (over 7 miles opposite direction). Does anyone have an experience with attempting or receiving an inter-district transfer? I’m sure it would be extremely unlikely to happen but I’d like to learn how things work and what options exist for elementary schooling

the only way i've ever heard somebody doing this is if their parent works in that school district they want to attend.

A teacher friend of mine has her kids in our county and lives in another. I live in durham county. Every year I have to fill out a hardship form to keep my kid in my school around February. Every year around April she has to fill out a form for Orange County and wait to be dismissed, then fill out a hardship and transfer form for durham county. Every year. She basically runs our school — like she’s respected admin who does real good.
I would think it would be very challenging as non-staff to have this work out.

From what I know, there's a fee you have to pay to go to school in another county and even after that a spot isn't guaranteed

Because you live outside Wake County, attending a Wake school generally requires a release from Durham Public Schools and WCPSS approval; approval isn’t guaranteed. WCPSS’s regular transfer requests are for students already enrolled at their Wake base school, so ask WCPSS Student Assignment to confirm which process applies. Schools capped or projected above 95% capacity aren’t open to transfer students, and approved students provide their own transportation. NC charter schools are another option for any state resident, with admission by lottery and no tuition.

If it does happen, you’ll probably have to drop them off and pick them up until they start driving. I doubt they’d put you on the bus route

Unfortunately, it’s very unlikely. You should get comfortable with your school in Durham.

I've never heard of anyone successfully enrolling in another county here. A few people I knew who tried using family addresses in another county all got caught and sent back to their correct school district.
