We used to make these cake like ones... not muffins specifically. They were round and had lemon/blueberry/cherry in the middle and some typy of crumble around the edge. And yah... the lemon ones were off the hook

The butterscotch pecan was about as popular.

u/rabbitholeseverywher Apr 06 '26
This is tied for the best muffin I have ever tasted. The one it's tied with is the blueberry muffin recipe from the aqua blue-coloured Joy of Cooking recipe book from the 60s (70s?), for anyone curious.
Did the butterscotch-pecan have some sort of crumble situation on top? Just a little?
1
u/scottyb83 Apr 06 '26
It wasn't a crumble it was basically drizzled with a little butterscotch syrup before it was baked which kind of made I guess almost a brulé effect. There was also a whole pecan on top.

Former employee.... the Butterscotch Pecan was our most popular followed closely by the Chocolate chip. I have never been able to re-create either of these at home :(

There used to be one holding on under union station till at least 2015, not sure if it's still there and the quality of the muffins wasn't quite what I remembered them to be.

u/Sherbourne-for-this Apr 05 '26
It's been gone since union started renovating. They've been out of business since 2020.

Cinnabon never came back either, and I still miss the smell when taking the train into Union. We were promised a Cinnabon 4 years ago!

u/LonghornJct08 Apr 06 '26
The two I'd love to see back at Union Station are Cinnabon and the Harveys that used to be where the staircase they added at the west end of the great hall to the Go area is now. I can't stomach the smell of McDonald's let alone eat the 'food' they sell.

u/MountainDrew42 Apr 06 '26
And the Dairy Queen. Some days you just need a Crispy Crunch Blizzard on the way home, you know?

u/Responsible_Fish5439 Apr 05 '26
used to LOVE getting a cinnabon at union. i memorized the crazy underground route from via to the go/food portion. but that was years ago and now i get so turned around in union since the reno.
4
u/eternes_ Apr 06 '26
I swore off union station food because of the Master Splinter sized RAT in the food court walking around like it worked there.
6
u/Scroty_McBalls Apr 06 '26
Some other cinnamon bun place opened up in Union, so not sure if that scratches the itch, or if it means a Cinnabon wouldn't want to move in if there's competition.
1
u/mollophi Apr 06 '26
It's Cinnaholic. If you're craving a cinnamon bun, it'll do. Pretty large, decent amount of icing, but their particular schtick is covering the bun with loads of other toppings. If you have a sweet tooth, I guess it's fine, but it sometimes comes across as just eating two different things. Grab the old school and be modestly content with a warm bun.

u/brokenlampPMW2 Apr 06 '26
I enjoyed mine from that new place. Hard to screw up a Cinnamon Bun, not even my high school cafeteria could ruin that.

Looks like theres only 1 distant relative left alive. The last remaining Mmmuffins rebranded to “Muffin Plus” in 2024.
“By 2019, the chain had only two stores, one in the Scotia Plaza food court in Toronto and the other in the Montreal suburb of Côte-Saint-Luc.[3] The Toronto location was reported to have closed in 2020. [4] The Montreal shopping mall location was confirmed to be re-branded as "Muffin Plus" as of October 2024, which means there are now zero locations existing in Canada.”

Mmmuffins in Scotia plaza closed when COVID hit, although I believe they were planning to close anyway. Good times hitting that up in the path back in the day

I was so excited to find that location when I visited ~2012 because we haven’t had them in Winnipeg for a long time before that. I was sad but not surprised to see they were gone by the time I visited again.

Miss the old concourse back in 2008-2012 when I was going to uni/work.
The Second Cup (butter pecan) was my morning coffee til the first Pilot Coffee opened in the grand hall.
The sushi spot was my go to "hungry but in a hurry" at 6pm.
Also the Cinnabon every morning making union smell delish.
This just also reminded me of the old PoP machines that would stamp your cardboard card pre-Presto. I remember holding onto a 12 stack of the pass version throughout the year so I could get the tax credit refund on transit back in the day when that was still a thing.
1
u/monieeka Apr 06 '26
Let’s be real though, pilot beats out second cup 7/7 days of the week.

u/BackToTheCottage Apr 06 '26 edited Apr 06 '26
I'd agree with you 5 years ago (diehard fan) but their rebrand looks bad, their coffee tastes worse, and their prices are ridiculous. Was $50 for a kilo of beans while Olimpico from Montreal was $20 cheaper.
Sigh does everything have to be enshittified?

u/calimehtar Apr 05 '26
No way it's still there. I remember there being one around the same time at yonge and Eglinton as well.

when i was growing up i went to the one in the Oshawa Centre all the time and kept going to them when i moved to Toronto. As others have said - their chocolate chip muffin was INSANE...but honestly everything they made that i tried was spot on.
honestly this is a store that could make a successful comeback - great product, instantly identifiable marketing, rich in Canadian history and tons of nostalgia. it's a shame they ever went under because i have nothing but good memories of them.
apparently the last location (pictured below) was in Cote St-Luc Shopping Centre in Montreal. in 2024 it was changed to something called "Muffin Plus" (which, through no fault of their own, gets a big middle finger from me for taking down a Canadian icon...lol)

u/candleflame3 Apr 05 '26
It's weird because the company that now owns the brand is very much a going concern.
16
u/Toronto-1975 Apr 05 '26
it amazes me that the parent company thought it was a good idea to eliminate all the mmmuffins locations but looked at Country Style - the only Canadian coffee shop that makes Tim Hortons look good - and went yeah we'll keep that one! like honestly WTF....whyyyy???

In April 2018, Groupe Le Duff subsidiary Threecaf Brands sold Timothy's World Coffee and mmmuffins to Canadian company MTY Food Group of Richmond Hill, Ontario, for $1.7 million, of which $1.2 million was in cash, $0.2 million in assumed liabilities, and $0.3 million as a holdback.[6] This included 30 Timothy's franchises in Canada and two in the United States, seven corporate Timothy's locations in Canada, and four mmmuffins stores.[7]
Chief operating officer of the MTY Food Group quick service restaurant division Jason Brading has stated that once the leases on the two remaining stores expire, the stores will be converted to other brands, but that the mmmuffins products may be incorporated into other cafe properties owned by MTY.[3]

Never had the chance to try this spot. What was it about the muffins did you guys like? Were they very cake-like? Like, super fluffy and sweet? Were they properly "muffiny", kinda dense and filling, but still sweet enough not to come across as a bread with extras?
For the chocolate chip muffin, were they like, giant blobs of chocolate, or speckled tiny bits all throughout?
I'm so curious on the specifics.
2
u/Toronto-1975 Apr 06 '26
as i remember - and it's been a long time - with the chocolate chip muffin it was this really cake-y consistency, not too light but not too dense with almost a sour cream cake sort of taste and texture, with a nice crunch to the top. chocolate chips (not globs, actual chips) well dispersed throughout but there was also a good amount of chips on the crunchy top. they were SO GOOD.
i had alot of the other muffins as well and they were all top notch from what i recall. they were just amazing and they were in pretty much every large mall in the GTA back until the 90's/early 00's and then they started disappearing. for the longest time there was one remaining location in the Scotia Plaza food court in downtown Toronto but sometime around the start of COVID or a bit before it they closed that location.
2
u/treelife365 Apr 06 '26
I may be wrong, but if you find a Coffeetime and try their muffins, it'll be very similar.

This is not the original recipe. There was no butter or sour cream. Although I worked there in the 90s, I still remember most of the recipe. For chocolate chips for example, the recipe for a 5 gallon pail of muffin dough was something like a 10 kilo bag of flour (likely self rising), 2.5 litres of buttermilk, 1.5-2 litres of vegetable oil, about 1 litre of whole eggs, sugar (this one is a total blank for me so don’t know quantity) and it me be that sugar was pre mixed with the flour, and finally I believe it was 5 pounds of chocolate chips but it could be more. The base muffin mix was left out at room temperature and used the next day. Mix ins were done just before baking except for cranberry which mixed the day before and stored in a fridge.
This mix was the base for all the muffins. You just changed the mix ins. Like for carrot muffins for example it was a few pounds of freshly grated carrots, sultana raisins that had been soaked over night and pineapples. Banana was freshly mushed bananas and nuts. Cranberry was 8 pounds of frozen cranberries.

u/FeralShawtyWithAPony Apr 09 '26
Do you remember the cheddar muffins what they used for those?
3
u/ProfitSpecific1215 Apr 09 '26
It was the base recipe with grated cheddar cheese. Can't remember how much cheese was added to the 5 gallon mix but from memory of the size of the block of cheese I would say about 5 pounds of cheese. Thankfully we had an electric grater.

I found this recipe for the Butterscotch Pecan muffins, does it seem about right? (I believe the whole wheat flour is a lie though) https://thelostrecipe.weebly.com/mmmuffins.html
2
u/ProfitSpecific1215 Apr 29 '26
Not sure about the whole wheat flour. Mind you, if memory serves me right, the flour bags were proprietary and we did not any leavening agents so it’s possible the bag contained a mix of white and whole wheat flour along with baking powder and baking soda.

This is super interesting, especially with someone elsewhere in this thread claiming to have worked there and noting that the chain used buttermilk, not sour cream.

u/cabbagetown_tom Apr 05 '26
Someone told me the key to their recipe was sour cream.
99
u/ProfitSpecific1215 Apr 06 '26
It wasn’t sour cream, it was buttermilk. Source, I worked there. Muffins were flour, buttermilk, vegetable oil, fresh eggs and I believe we used honey instead of sugar but not 100% sure on that one. We used frozen berries, real cheese grated fresh every day.
