Beginner questions belong in /r/beginnersurfers

This subreddit is a place for surfers to discuss surfing and/or share interesting stuff about surfing. It is not a place to learn how to surf.

Beginner questions belong in /r/beginnersurfers.

Examples of beginner questions:

“Is this a ding?”

“Does it need to be repaired?”

“Can it be repaired?”

“What surfboard should I buy to learn on?”

“A longboard won't fit in my car. What shortboard should I buy?”

“I'm going to buy this shortboard to learn on. Is it a good one?”

“Why can't I ride this shortboard I just bought to learn on?”

“Can someone recommend a good surf instructor?”

“How big will the waves be on my trip next year?”

“I want to start surfing. Any tips?”

“I found this board in the trash. How much can I sell it for?”

There are ample resources with which you can find answers to your basic questions.

If you want to discuss that kind of stuff, head on over to /r/beginnersurfers. It's full of people just like you, as well as more experienced folks who want to help you learn.

Beginner questions may be removed with no notice. Because it's simply too much effort to deal with every single post, individually.

Repeat offenders will be banned until they're not a beginner anymore.

The rest of the subreddit rules can be found HERE.

Awesome experience. Could’ve watched for days.

The guy in the video was getting towed by a red bull sea doo. Any ideas who it might be?

I’d love to get some more footage, this guy was hitting 360’s but I didn’t catch it on film. Hopefully it’s posted somewhere.

Anyone ever quit their job to go surfing? Advice?

I’m a 22 year old male and I’m a fairly good surfer, I’m pretty good compared to most other surfers where I live. For about a year I’ve been debating quitting my job as an auto body technician to go travel the world and surf while I’m not married or have any kids or other responsibilities. I can go on a surf trip every few months, but I live in west Florida where we don’t get waves frequently at all and they are usually blown out. Part of me thinks I should just suck it up and stay home and stop being ungrateful for my job and where I live. Another part of me wants to sell my stuff, take all the money I have saved up which is about $50,000 and go to indo or somewhere with good waves all the time for a year or so because now or never.

Thoughts? Advice? Am I stupid for thinking this and maybe trying to ruin my life or do I need to get it out of my system? Would love to hear any feedback or experiences.

Deleting social media has made me way more stoked to surf

Deleted instagram last year and now I feel way more pumped to go surfing. Maybe its because you see less surfing on a daily basis.. less influencers, media etc..?

Has anyone had a similar experience?

Reverse Shoulder Surgery

• Upvotes

Hey everyone. My dad is getting a reverse shoulder surgery soon and I figured I’d ask here if anyone has had this done and is still surfing? He’s 64 and has been surfing his whole life so it’s a pretty big part of his life. Any stories about yourself or someone you know who has had this done and is active in a sport would be appreciated.

Longboarding at Punta Burros (Punta Mita MX) 4-6 ft plus

Were looking to do a quick trip to the Punta Mita area, still deciding if we want to stay in Punta Mita town, or book a hotel near Burros. The forecast is saying only 2-3 ft for el anclote (will that even break?), and 4-6ft plus for Burros which is why im leaning that way. Anyone surf Burros recently? Still doable for noseriding or does it turn more into a shortboard wave at this size?

Hooded Wetsuit Causing Neck Soreness

I live in norcal and prefer to surf with a hood, but I've noticed more neck soreness than usual after sessions when I wear my wetsuit with a hood attached. I think it's because the attached hood creates resistance when I turn my head, so I'm basically doing a ton of neck resistance exercises every time I surf.

Anyone have this experience too? And if so, is there a detached hood option that you would recommend?

I'm looking for fin suggestions for a Lost Quiver Killer. I have a 7-8 year old set of Future Mayhem that are nice quads, and a AM2 thruster set, but I'd like to put a set on my Christmas list.

Dakar Dream: Senegal's Surfers in Their Own Words | Full Documentary

I'm the director. This is the full film, free on YouTube, 77 minutes, in Wolof with English subtitles.

Dakar sits at the westernmost point of Africa and gets swell 365 days a year. The wave off Ngor is the one The Endless Summer filmed sixty years ago, but the local scene that grew up around it has rarely told its own story. We followed Dame Samb, Déguène Thioune and Fallou Bousso for a year. A lot of the footage came off the surfers' own phones, and the story is told through their WhatsApp voice notes. There are no sit-down interviews and no staged scenes.

Executive produced by SURFER. Happy to answer anything about the surfers, the shoot, or surfing in Senegal.

Costume wetsuit?

Looking to wear a wetsuit as a costume on Halloween. Can anyone recommend the cheapest, lightest wetsuit that won’t make me die of heat exhaustion at a house party? I’m a petite female (under 5’ 0”). Thanks!

Does anyone have firsthand information about the timeline of Griffin Colapinto's relationship?

I'm looking into questions surrounding Griffin Colapinto's relationship timeline and how the surf industry responds to allegations of inappropriate conduct involving minors (as a lot of us are right now).

There's been online discussion about Griffin dating someone who was reportedly still in high school when their relationship became public, as well as speculation about whether posts discussing the relationship were removed or suppressed.

I'm trying to separate what's actually documented from internet rumors.

I'm particularly interested in:

  • Timeline: Does anyone have dated, publicly available posts, interviews, or other evidence establishing when the relationship began or became public?
  • Earlier reporting: Were there articles, social media posts, or discussions about this that have since been deleted? Does anyone have archived links or screenshots showing what was originally published?
  • Industry response: Did any surf publications, sponsors, or organizations publicly address the discussion?
  • Firsthand accounts: Does anyone have direct knowledge of relevant events or public statements that could help establish an accurate timeline?
  • Legal issues: Does anyone know the name of his attorney or the alleged attorney who helped him scrub information off the internet? Lots of posts and comments are now removed.

I'm also interested in understanding whether there is credible evidence behind claims that discussion of the relationship was deliberately suppressed. To be clear, I have not independently verified those claims.

I'm not looking to spread rumors, identify private individuals, or solicit anyone's personal information. I'm looking for credible, verifiable information and firsthand sources who may be willing to speak confidentially.

If you have relevant information, feel free to DM me. I won't publish anyone's identity or account without discussing attribution and consent first. Also happy to share who I am and my involvement in all of this if you'd like to chat :)

Thanks in advance!

The oldest debate, is surfing a front footed or rear footed sport?

Post image
0 Upvotes

The guy with Okia claims surfing is a front footed sport and pro surfers are just explaining it wrong and aren't aware. I don't disagree but in his video he claims the only time you want to have weight on your backfoot is to stall for a barrel or avoid nosediving.

This is where I disagree. For a carve or roundhouse cutback it makes sense to keep weight on your front foot as you want to keep accelerating and are moving horizontally however for a topside maneuver or air, I often see pro surfers straighten their front leg and shift weight back so the nose lifts. In some variations you'll see the board go nearly above the wave face with front leg fully straight and then the surfer twists and the board follows and then the rear leg is straightened and slightly bent and weight appears to be on the front foot and the board is back on heelside rail parallel to the wave face for a moment before the surfer points it towards the beach to climb back down the face and applies front foot pressure and leans forward to move down.

It seems to me you want to actually stop the horizontal motion for a topside turn/snap and you need to lean back on the tail as the board lifts then convert that energy into the twist.

Also look at the screenshot with blue circle, it appears to me with gravity pulling straight down the majority of the weight has to be on the backfoot as he's climbing the face before a top turn. The majority of his mass cannot be on his front foot the way he is positioned. Does anyone else agree? I posted this on the guys youtube channel and he deleted my comment 😄

Here is the video where he argues surfing is a front footed sport and everyone is wrong about it being backfooted.
