Gliders coming soon!

I’ve got two new gliders coming soon. This will be my first experience with pet gliders. Here’s my cage setup. I’m going with the “open environment” pouches to begin with so that they have more opportunity to see us and learn we aren’t a threat. This is my beginner cage setup because it fits in our living room. Hubby and kids all leave for school and work during the day, so it’s only me here until the evening. I chose the living room because we all gather here during the nighttime before bed. I wanted them in the room with us so trust and bonding can begin naturally. Eventually, I’ll move them to a bigger cage setup in a quieter part of the house. Anything jumping out as problematic? I have time to adjust things or remove things before they come.

Maple and Crystal keep chasing me and biting my shoulders. Any advice?

Post image

I have two sugar gliders, Maple and Crystal, and lately they've been biting my shoulders for some reason. At first, I would make a quick "psst" sound whenever they bit me, and it seemed to discourage the behaviour. Now they completely ignore it and continue biting.

What's confusing is that during free-roam time they'll actively jump onto me, chase after me, and then bite my shoulders. They don't seem scared of me since they're choosing to come to me, which makes it even harder to figure out what's causing it.

Has anyone experienced something similar with their gliders? What are some reasons they might suddenly start targeting my shoulders, and how can I discourage the behaviour without hurting our bond?

Also, I need advice on trimming their nails. Maple and Crystal never stay still long enough for me to trim them safely. What methods do you use to keep your gliders calm and still during nail trims?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions! 🐾💙

General Help about to take in 2 gliders, any and all help appreciated

Yesterday a coworker asked me if I wanted her 2 sugar gliders, as she said she doesn't have enough time for them and I'm apparently the person people go to when they're trying to rehome animals (I've had 2 other coworkers offer me a corn snake and then a cockatiel 🫩) I am a genuine animal lover and have experience with hamsters, mice, guinea pigs, cats, dogs and various reptiles but i only take on what I know i can handle. I told her no at first but the more I think about it the less I trust this coworker to find them a safe home, as it seems she wants them rehomed as soon as possible. So I asked for pictures of her setup and.... yeah... NO ENRICHMENT WHATSOEVER. when I asked if there was more she said no because "they dont like it." So! I'm bringing the babies home tomorrow. I've already started doing my own research of course but I'm looking for any advice from people who own these little guys. Your favorite well trusted care guides, Amazon links to safe items so I can get that cage filled up as soon as possible. If it turns out I am in over my head im more than willing to take them to a rescue or someone with experience (I'm located in East texas) I just want to get them into a better situation as SOON as possible and I know I'm a lot more capable than most people when it comes to animals. Thanks for reading and please help me lol

Breeder recommendations in SC?

I have a 12 year old rescue (male; neutered) whose brother passed away earlier this month and is starting to refuse his food.

We're trying to get him a new cagemate but I haven't been able to find a breeder near our area that is actually reputable, and have run into a few scams from people rehoming gliders.

I was hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction? I want what's best for him, and with him going as far as refusing his favorite treats, I'm growing even more concerned.

What is your favourite sugar glider game.. what do you do to play with them?

I am asking because I’m a new owner of 4.
2 six month female and 2 eight months male. And I wonder what others do. So far what seems to be favourite is me being a tree arms in the air and I am simply a thing to laugh themselves on or off lol. Which I think is funny being an accessory in their live. I wonder if they do other things or like other things. They have a whole room for them and an open cage where they eat but mostly live in an old jacket’s pocket of mine that was hanged in there. And don’t want to remove it now because they are so cute when they sleep in a ball in the pocket.

Adoption/Selling In desperate need of help in NYC area

My 7 year old bonded pair, boy and girl.
My girl has passed away from unforeseen circumstances. Rushed to the vet. Was okay yesterday, and was lethargic and unmoving the next day. Rushed her to the vet and was under immediate care for hours but has passed. I need to re-home my boy Milo. I love him but I cant get another one and I would want him to have a better life with a large glider family. I don’t trust anybody other than current responsible Glider owners and I really need help. Theres only so much love I can provide before he gets depressed. PLEASE help me.

He is perfectly fine in health and is neutered.

I don’t want to loose my sweet boy.

General Help Considering getting a pair - questions I couldn’t find answers to

so I’ve been reading and watching everything I could find online to help me decide if gliders are the right pets for me. these are the questions still left unanswered:
would it be okay to leave them with a live-in petsitter when I go on vacation for a week, twice a year? how much of a mental toll does it take on them when they’re getting adequate care but not from the owner they’re bonded with?
what are the red flags to look for in breeders?
are there some special issues I could encounter after buying 2 sister joeys?
should I put some insulation on their enclosure when I open the windows, could draft harm them even if the cage is heated properly?

Just got a sugar glider!

Hey! I jut got a sugar glider and want to know any of the lesser known big no and best food brands good treats etc! I've owned a large variety of animals over the years from dogs and cats to squirrels and opossums. My baby is 2 years old ! I understand they are colony animals, this one was not with another so I will likely have to get him a friend ! Edit- also want to know how soon I should start handling him, he is very well handled prior to me but I dont wanna stress him

I want everything to be correct and safe right away, rather than purchasing a pair and making them suffer an inadequate cage setup that I have to heavily correct/change. I’ve owned a lot of reptiles, bred feeder/pet rats and insect colonies, and always put in the effort, $ and did the research for each species and always made sure their enclosures, diets and care were appropriate and always had proper setups before I had the animals!
I am in absolutely no rush and do not have any of the supplies or gliders yet so any changes are fine. I just googled appropriate cages/sizes with safe bar spacing so if the one in my cart sucks, I’ll find a better one. I’m heavily considering a like-new cage from marketplace with the appropriate dimensions as I have seen sooo many different types for great prices.
I plan on following the TPG diet and getting the vitamins/calcium from TPG rather than BML. (I haven’t talked to any real people with more experience and knowledge than me about anything yet till now so if my own research sucks, give me better recommendations or options!)
I read that the exercise wheels are a must, is the one I have in the cart okay? And can it be on the floor of the cage or should I mount it higher up?
I also plan on breeding a small mealworm colony for them! I read they can have a few a day, but if it’s way less than that I might just buy on the occasion rather than breed them.
I saw that the rope toy thing might not be the best bc of their nails?
Judge my cart and give me info you’d give to someone just starting out!
I am not new to exotics with specific, higher care needs, but I haven’t owned many small mammal species aside from rodents so y’all can be judgy and load the comments with any amount of info. I’ll be taking notes ❤️😆
(Ik it says avoid commerce discussion, hopefully this bit of my post is allowed, but it’d be helpful if anyone could message me privately with rescues/actually reputable breeders in or near Iowa, US. I dislike backyard breeding of any kind for any species and would rather not support somebody or some shitty store that sucks. Sorry if this part isn’t allowed 🥲)
