ANNOUNCEMENT! I'm Caroline Bicks, Stephen E. King Chair in Literature at the University of Maine and author of MONSTERS IN THE ARCHIVES: MY YEAR OF FEAR WITH STEPHEN KING. Join me for an AMA on June 5th @1:15pm EST.
Hello, Reddit! Caroline Bicks here, author of Monsters in the Archives: My Year of Fear with Stephen King. I'm a Shakespeare professor who grew up loving Stephen King's stories. When I took the job of Stephen E. King Chair in Literature nine years ago, I was told I'd never meet the man himself. Four years into the job, he called me at home, and we started to develop a great working relationship. He granted me first-of-its-kind access to his private archives, and my book grew out of what I found when I read all the existing drafts of Carrie, Pet Sematary, Night Shift, The Shining, and 'Salem's Lot. I look forward to sharing what I discovered with you about how he crafted these iconic books! https://carolinebicks.com

OMG I cannot believe I found this at my local Half Price Books!
I don’t think I’ve ever snatched a book off the shelves faster at a HPB! I’ve seen a copy there before but always for $100+ so this one was a massive surprise!

Discussion You can only recommend ONE Stephen King book for the rest of your life. Which one is it?
Title says it all! If you could only choose one King book as your ultimate favorite to hand to a fellow reader, which one takes the crown? Let me know your top pick!

Discussion I just finished “Other worlds than these” and have now read every word of fiction by Sai King. Here’s my bookcase, ranked from favorite to least favorite.
Some of these placements hurt my heart but it had to be done. (Also I loved On Writing; it just doesn’t count for this rank ordering).
Edit: I forgot Later existed. Will be purchasing soon.
Also don’t have the full Gwendy trilogy. lol so thankful I let Reddit audit me. I’d have missed several books otherwise.

Currently Reading Just got it today.
I bought Salem’s Lot last year in August and I loved it and in October last year I read Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption and I haven’t read any Stephen king book since then, and today finally I am reading this one. Pretty excited. Did you like it? Is it frightening?

I love these book covers
They all have unique styles to them. Some of them have the atmosphere of what the story is and some just have nostalgia to the time it came out.

Carrie on Prime (I know, I know)
I know, I know. I just wanted to say that as a stand-alone show, not meant to be dead-on accurate to the book, it is actually pretty good. I won’t include any spoilers (not that we all don’t know what is going to happen)! There are some really heart warming moments throughout the time she spends in high school. There are some terrifying aspects too. Just being new to school would be terrifying enough but kids today are downright vicious. It is a unique take on an old classic. I don’t think it does the original any harm because it is different enough to be its own thing “based” on a book. I don’t know, I went into thinking it was a duplicate of the original film but have been pleasantly surprised multiple times about how it was made current!

I think King's most unsettling characters are the ones who are only awful in small, ordinary ways
I've been rereading a few King books this year, and something has changed for me. The monsters aren't usually the parts that stick around afterward.
It's the petty people.
The coworker who enjoys having a tiny bit of power over somebody. The neighbor who keeps a grievance alive because being angry feels good. The parent who knows exactly which sentence will hurt their kid and says it anyway. The person who sees somebody embarrassed in public and quietly enjoys it.
King will spend pages inside that kind of person's head, and the frightening part is how rarely they think, "I'm doing something evil." They think they're correcting someone, getting even, protecting what's theirs, teaching a lesson, or simply taking the respect they're owed.
Then he'll introduce the supernatural element and it almost feels like it found an existing crack rather than creating one.
That's probably why Needful Things works so well for me. The premise is ridiculous if you describe it clinically: mysterious shopkeeper sells people objects and asks for favors. But the favors work because Castle Rock is already packed with people carrying around tiny resentments, humiliations and scores they haven't settled.
Same reason characters like Harold Lauder bother me more on rereads than a lot of King's actual monsters. You can watch someone repeatedly encounter little exits from the path they're on and keep choosing not to take them.
When I was younger I thought King was especially good at imagining monsters.
Now I think he might be better at noticing the completely mundane ways people give monsters something to work with.

Just finished 'Cujo'
Loved this story, and I'd consider it a top 10 of all King's books I've read so far. Really enjoyed the two different family dynamics that were explored. Very good read.

Discussion What was Richard Bachman like?
During the era of Bachman actively releasing books before the official King reveal, I wanted to know what it was like on the other side of things.
Did people know it was King right away or suspect it heavily? If so, what was that reasoning? Did Bachman have any sort of relevance in pop culture then? Was Bachman potentially people’s favorite author? Were you personally tricked as someone who read a Bachman book unknowingly?

Discussion In a 1978 interview, Stephen King stated that he understood why Kubrick removed the hedge animals from the adaptation of The Shining, arguing that it wouldn't have been possible to achieve the scene with convincing effects and that even if it were possible, the audience would laugh at the concept

Movie The Twins Photo in Dr Sleep
When Dan returns to the overlook and is starting the boiler I spotted what may be a framed photo of the Grady twins. I wonder if this is supposed to be a call back to the scrapbook Jack finds in the book or just a coincidence. They appear to be younger in the photo than they are in the movie if so

Loving Pet Sematary
Almost halfway thru this book I picked up for spooky szn and loving every single chapter.
I always wrote off this story as just some corny ghosts of pets and that’s it. I’m glad I picked it up. The atmosphere of it is I think some of King’s best writing for that. It’s tangible in a way most stories aren’t.
My 3 legged cat Nina definitely makes it hit harder 🥹🖤
